You have to understand that hydrochloric acid is a solution of hydrogen chloride gas dissolved in distilled water. 0.1moldm3 means 0.1mol of the HCL gas dissolved in 1L (1000cm3) of water.

Since the number of moles (n) is given by reacting mass/molar mass,
0.1mol of HCL will yield 0.1*36.5(where the 36.5 is the relative molecular mass of HCl)
This gives 3.65g of HCL. Therefore, if 3.65g of hydrogen chloride gas is bubbled into 1L of distilled or deionized water, it will give a solution of HCL with a molarity of 0.1M.

If you want to prepare 0.1M HCL solution from the already prepared 36.5% stock solution you bought, then let me know.

Nice one! I enjoy practical Chem all the time. I guess from where you stopped, he might need to use density = mass/volume to work out the volume of stock acid in cm3, when given density from the label. Am I right??

The concentration of stock solution of 36%HCl is 11.64M.To prepare 0.Imol/dm3,u can use C1V1=C2V2.C1=11.64M,V1 is the volume you are to measure,C2=0.1 mol per dm cube while V2 is 1000cm3.V2-V1 is the amount of distilled water to be used for dilution.

Alright. Look at the reagent bottle containing your stock solution and tell me the % of HCL in it. Also check out for the density and we can proceed from there
