The second person to comment have already answered your question nicely, but let me add to it, only if Nigerians will be truthful to themselves they will realize that abroad is just mare hype. Let me talk about USA, to me American Dream is just a mirage. I usually tell my friends not to move if they have a good job. Then most of them used to ask me why do I not come back if it's so bad, well I came back now I live in Nigeria. And am happy.

I totally understand u,

But I do think for some pple traveling could be the only way out.

Now , I don't live in the USA so I can't tell wat illegals go through but in the uk they can get a job not legally though, and the smart ones will work 80 hrs a week quickly buy a small plot , build a one goat for their family back home . And u know once accommodation is settled , life is much easier anywhere in the world.

Getting in illegally does not mean one will never be legal. Once u are in u start to walk the ropes to settlement like millions of illegals before u.

I think the culture in the USA is more favorable to illegals compare to UK, as long as the individual stay away from the South and closer to the East and also stay away from crime...something as stupid as driving while drunk or under the influence (could be prescription medication, tired while driving, sleeping while driving, etc ... driving under any influence period!), can be a stumbling block.

I live in UK and that's d only place I ll be able to talk about. I ll discourage, discourage and discourage you even my enemy from coming to UK. I will even beg you to stay back in Nigeria cos if you come to UK at this point in time, you are doomed. Pls, don't let anyone or situation push you to go abroad-UK without papers. What you r going through in Nigeria today ll definitely be a child play compare to what your life ll look like in UK without papers.

I swear down, if you see the numbers of Nigerians in deportation centres in UK, you ll pity these people. Some Nigerians have been in deportation centres for almost two years without committing a single crime. Their only crime is being in UK illegally.

You can't go to the bank, school, work and renting a room might even give you away to immigration. If you decide to put up with a friend or family members, you r done cos they ll only tolerate you for few days before they begin to show you their true colour. Trust me, that's when you ll now realise that you don't know what you have until you lose it.

You ll only enjoy these western world with your papers in your hands. Anything outside this papers is a suicide

Jesu shocked

U just proved my point.

Next time he comes tell him to look for a charity/foundation and help out for a couple of hours, or go to a hospital and pay for one persons bill dat is being held for none payment, or go to a govt primary school and buy uniforms for ten kids with the worst uniforms, should I continue??

Don't make it seem like self centredness runs in ur blood ooo, it's not nice undecided

Does living abroad automatically make one a charity organisation?
The person you're asking to pay other people's hospital bills, and buy uniforms, has he finished paying all the debts he's in abroad?

This is getting annoying , how come each time a person is asking for directions on how to travel abroad most pple in diaspora will be discouraging the person.

If it's dat terrible why are u still there?

You enjoy the benefits of living in an organised society, knowing fully well that naija is a difficult place to live.

Are u scared of the competition the new immigrants will bring?

Nigerians in diaspora , what exactly are u afraid off??

Now, I need your help on this.. Twas easy for you living now in Manchester if I'm right? I guess the rules in UK was flexible for you. The way u got ur papers, help me too and also get the papers. I'm damn serious about it

You asked for DIRECTIONS to travel ABROAD, and you're being discouraged.
My brother, is abroad in the next street that you're asking for directions?
You don't have Google Maps?
OK, I go direct you.
Carry bus enter MMIA, Ikeja.
Book any flight (minus Arik) going to Abroad.
When you enter plane, make sure you ask pilot not to fly past abroad.
Ask other passengers going to abroad for directions to the place.
When you reach abroad, you go know

U re right. One thing I am sure life abroad sweet cos one thing u will experience is constant power. God for me is like a dream. But i must tell u that life tho sweet is not easy. U ve high taxes, bills before u talk of spare for yourself. U can be sure ur taxes wud be well utilized to provide social services and d bills u pay are what u re served. Jobs are increasingly becoming hard and in some places where the official language is not English that one na another challenge. Also on job if u ve nothing to do then u might be sent back as u cant be on their social security unless u ve stayed long enough to get permanent residency or luckily citizenship and note that immigration, residency or citizenship requirements varies from country to country. The major advantage that makes u appear big is the currency value when compared to d weak naira.
Life abroad makes u realize that Nigeria is a zoo or a jungle governed by goats and other beasts in d palatial government houses. If u want to go abroad fine if u ve d money and u ve something tangible to go for if not u may end up wasting ur hard earned money to process visa u will never get. Also, i must remind u that these re not d best of times for some countries with respect to d refugee crisis caused by d Syrian conflict as well as Yemen, Iraq and Afghnistan. Hence, preference are given to refugees as countries has to meet their commitments to refugees as UN conventions demands.
For our useless leader if only they cud think to fix the country believe me the desire to travel out wud die a natural death and even Nigerians out wud love to come back home

No one is stopping you. Africans were In the past taken by force as slaves and shipped to America. If you are destined to be a slave no body will take you capture you and take you there but your slavery destiny will work on you until you suffer all hardsips to fulfill it, you can steal , you can kill just to go to America. Good for them but no thank you. No slavery in my destiny , I am a. Master and I'll reach my destiny here in Africa.

Hmmm

An eye opening thread here

I still think going abroad legally is better than staying here tho. The challenges faced there are a little compared to what people face here everyday.

What do I know anyways?

How can Nigerians in diaspora help Nigerians in Nigeria to migrate?

They are not customs and immigration na.

Nobody will be open about helping especially if the person to be helped is trying to do something illegal.

For example, anybody will be selective about who he or she will recommend for a job in their office and you will make sure that their CV and their behavior is correct.

What am I saying you won't tell me I have were I can work with such strenght I wouldn't want to leave and save for future expensenses.

The fact is THERE ARE NO JOBS IN NIGERIA that's why most youths with life ambition try to move anybody discouraging anyone is pure wickedness.
GOD BLESS U FOR THIS.... most of em outside no even care about the ones living in this shii hole called a country....personally i have lots of close family relatives in different countries from the u.k to america and even australia... but when i bring up the topic of emigration... them go begin tell u the tax problems and other nonsense problems over there...and they would say god forbid when u tell them to relocate back to naija.... to me i see all that as wickedness...if u cant help someone just keep ur mouth shut... dont start discouraging em....

Just one question?
Why u still there if there are no jobs over there. so you want to compare Nigeria rate of unemployment to there with just that one guy?

Note:Each country has it's own rate of unemployment but Nigeria's own is 61% high with our population contributing more of youths...you can't compare any western European country or America with the rate of unemployment here.

I think the idea is simple. Just be prepared before you leap, period.
There may be more jobs overseas than in Nigeria, but you need a means to get to the jobs and shelter of course. Would you take a job where the total amount you make is not enough to put a roof on your head? Would you take a job you can't get to because you don't have a car, and buses dont run everywhere like in Nigeria? All that could be mitigated with proper planning before hopping on the plane.

People at home have a certain mindset of life in America.... they only need to arrive... and all things will be bright and beautiful....just like on TV.... as long as you are willing to work hard. When those abroad say life is not as easy as you may think... it is called discouragement... because that is not what you want to hear. Yes...I am on vacation ..
loving it .... I should encourage you to invest half your life savings or borrow money and come enjoy just like me. What you dont factor in... is I have massive support... do I have to pay $150+ per nite in a cheap hotel?no... I pay zero for shelter...would you?...do I have to pay for food?...transport? No.. not a kobo....would you?...Would you have people showing you the ropes?...where to shop or get whatever?..no...but I do. It is not discouraging you from coming but for you to plan well and have every thing in order before you travel. I'll encourage everyone to come visit... don't overstay and be trapped here.... this can be a very lonely and a very rough place ... wayyy rougher than one weather Naija. There is sooo much to learn here...business ideas would just be jumping out at you. Dont see alerts as discouragement. ... same as people retiring or whatever and returning home... ignoring what those on ground are saying.... seeing it as same discouragement. Bottom line... look before you leap.
you are one of the discouragers the op is talking about

People discourage people for various reasons but personally it's not good. The thing is come and see when u see u will decide ur option. But migrating take a lot of thinking especially if one is going as illegal u don't know when u will be legal and u dont know when u can have access to see ur families back home they may be dead before one returns. Above all I always say if u don't have anything good u are doing in Nija my guy u have nothing to lose if u migrate and u go away for years it's a gamble that worth it .but not through Libya or desert. I wish anybody Goodluck. D end will justify thousands took d step long ago weight ur options and take d step.

Majority of our fellow Nigerians are a bunch of free loaders. You take them in for a month or two, without pay and even treat them like family, all for them to steal, possibly destroy things out of jealousy. Little appreciation while expecting one to treat them like queens and kings ( Mostly relatives), talk crap behind one's back and try acting ( lying ), like they live a glamorous life back in Nigeria.

The real irony is that the money spent to go abroad (many trips to embassy, visa, ticket, living expenses) could start a very good business here. If you can gather 1M, why the hell are you going to obodo oyinbo? You will make so much more from that 1M in business. But of course, we all want jobs jobs jobs... You know how many jobs you can create with your 1M business? You know how large your business will become in 2-5 years?

I had to sign in after 10years to comment on this distasteful thread. First, every one has a prerogative whether to help you or not. Even if one chooses not to help because of competition, it's their right. Nevertheless, IN America people barely have time for themselves not to talk of someone else. Parents live in the same city with their children but they don't see for months because of crazy schedule.

Secondly, I came to study in America six years back, and it didn't take two weeks before reality set in and I cried. I graduated two years after and I didn't get a job. Six months being jobless, I took up a dish washer job clearing plate for my mates who graduated with me. From there, I did laborer job, building stores and from there I did Valet, with MY Masters degree in Engineering and Bachelors in Electrical Engineering ( First Class, Best Graduating Student from Nigeria). Living on tips from people. All this was to pay house rent. As old as I am, I cry steady at night. Regretting I made a wrong choice coming here. But I couldn't return home just like that so I had to persevere ND pray to God to help me.

Interestingly, I helped a student from Nigeria to squat with me before she got her place. In less than a week, she was smoking Marijuana and worse off brought a guy to the house and the were snagging on my bed. My landlord, was mad about the weed and kicked us both out of the house. Helping someone got me homeless, as I couldn't afford to pay rent by myself. My sister, I sleep for Library for one week and God helped me. Even after I got my papers, I couldn't get a good job until recently. Imagine, 6 years! I thank God I am Inot a better place now but I have a credit card debt of $35,000. This is largely because I fell I'll and was uninsured. Infact them don carry me go court. While about 3,000 I used it to eat. So, when i start getting paid, I have to pay off my debt else interest will stack up to twice the amoint i owed. It is not easy!

My friend paid for marriage 15,000$ , two years after she withdrew his immigration petition. Imagine after hustling, pay and the money goes d9wn the drain. The guy is.now illegal and wants to commit suicide. Na beg we dey beg am. He doesn't have a steady job, and now he can't get work permit.

Haba, this girl you are very wicked to have this type of thinking pattern. So my dear sister stop being myopic with your thinking. If you want to support the whole of Africa go ahead. However quit generalizing and creating bad blood among kinsmen.

For those who want to come, if you don't have a support system have money to sustain yourwelf and don't expect favors from any one. Itso just you, your new company of friends and your God.

sadOp that's not true. You just don't understand. I will never encourage someone above 25 to come to Germany. I mean forget it, you just WON'T cope and will have to settle for less. The language is the big deal here. People think it's very easy to learn a language, they don't even plan and most think Europe/America is a place where the streets are made of gold. Sometimes you have to be EXTREMELY patient, sometimes you will be forced to give up on your dreams etc.

The truth is the younger the better. You don't want to come here and do some jobs you don't want to, just because you can't speak the language and therefore have no other choice

...yet you remain there. You seem well fitted and settled in, which is contrary to your cautions (assertions) you gave.

You even have enough leisure time to do Nairaland

Aba! why now? are you guys so scared of competition from new comers?
