The average Nigerian does not sell akamu, really? What are they selling then? Diamond and gold? Don't make me laugh here. An average Nigerian makes less than 30k a month, lives on less than 2 dollars per day. If you have to guess their job based on that, which one would you guess as their job? Akamu or diamond?

Nice thread but Nigeria is not a difficult place to live in. Those who want to migrate can do so legitimately and anyone seeking to stay shouldn't be made to feel like he or she is living in hell because it isn't true. Good thread
Nigeria is not just a hell, but worse than hell.

It's a wash... If you don't pay tax, then you're likely earning a bit less, since it's under the table. And if you've got living arrangements with your employer, then you're likely earning even less. You might go up to $13 or even $15/hour, but that's on the high end for house help, and you'd be lucky to pick up a lot of hours at that rate. Yes there are some who are extremely lucky, but the estimates I gave are not too far off.

If you don't have a sponsor you have to repay, then view it as replenishing the savings you had to sacrifice for the trip. The point is, unless you're a professional (which likely means you had to get a 4-year degree abroad - more debt there), it's very difficult to "make it" with service labour.

When I consider the people who stay here and become well-to-do with the same investment they would have used to travel, it's puzzling that those with the means to travel don't invest at home. Afterall, gathering almost 1M means you're not dirt poor

My projection is for the long term, not short term. Some maids do earn well.
I have learnt in my short life, never to say never.......
NB : A quick case study - Nanny A, N1,000,000 laying dormant in her account. An opportunity presents itself to travel to the USA. How many years, months, weeks or days would it take the nanny to replenish that savings account back to its former state, prior to travelling?
You see the logic + reasoning?
NB: All things been equal......

I dont discourage people to migrate especially if they are under some dire situation.
If you have a good job plus career in naija, can afford good hospitals, live well, afford holidays overseas e.t.c then they might want to consider d "abroad" option well. The "abroad" could be a career suicide at times.
can u help me come over

The returns on using 1M for business in Nigeria compounded after 5 years can pay for annual vacations abroad. Why would 1M remain dormant earning peanuts in interest? As an example, import 1M goods, make 1.5M turnover. Now import 1.5M, sell for 2.25M. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Hmmmm. The day I traveled out of this country and came back, I realized my urge, zeal and desperation to leave this country for good just varnished. Thank God I didn't go for the other plans I had. Would v been frustrated.

The truth is most of us don't need to go and be living there. We are better off here. All most need is just to go there for a vacation and I swear the desperation to by all means travel out will just come down like a manliness dying to enter a pssuy and wen it has entered what will happen to D dick?.......

THANK u. (my own experience tho)

My sister pls done deceive your self...naija is hellish, in as much as I hate to say 'ordinary Ghana'like most people say, thers nothing ordinary here. I was in kumasi since last week Thursday and light went off only for two mins...life is valued here ..it's not just infrastructure. (just 2 mins in whole week)in Nigeria every one is angry, poor man ,rich man etc for only what God knows,

It's as am speaking now with all the light Ghana has their still building the biggest gas plant for light in Africa, ..see Ghana roads, attitude to life etc, with all Nigeria's money Ghana would be Dubai, but Nigeria is going backwards, trust me naija is hell I'll be back in two weeks ,but the thought of going back pains me.

People deceiving us that Nigeria is giant of Africa are just demons...it's a big lie.

Don't be deceived naija is hellish...person node know how dirty his house de till him visit clean house

I don't blame people who discourage you or intending immigrants. Organized society yes!!! but life is not particularly easy overseas. Forget about what you see in the movies or read. It's not the same! Are u ready to do odd jobs? Are you ready to slave your soul away and work very hard for every dime that enters your pocket? Most people abroad just survive but are not 'living the life' ... Are you ready for that? The truth is that there are a lot of Nigerians who live better lives in nigeria than people in the US or uk. Make sure you weigh all your options before you make that plunge

abroad is not for everybody. if you are not mentally smart, u cant survive. if you cant endure pain, you cant survive.
if you want it easy, then you have to be hot as hell, by that, i mean, if you are a guy, you have to be hot and sexy to the point that atleast 8 out of 10 ladies wont be able to resist you. seriously, on my first trip abroad, i was taken care of by ladies. yes you have to know how to satisfy them too. u know the health risk that comes with that right. its not everyone that might be lucky like me, but if you are sexy, smart and know how to use ur tool, abroad go sweet you die. these girls no dey play with sexy BBC at all. unlike naija wey these annoying oloshos go dey disturb you for money, there na over correct babes go they pay you. remember u have to be hot. six packs is compulsory. well to cut the very long story short, if you go to abroad for gigolo work and you are hot, then you are in heaven on earth.
on the other hand, if you are ready to go through the stress that comes with money without using your tool, then you are also welcome.

Which kine yeye comment be this?

Op, I do not see any wisdom in this topic,. An average Nigerian want to be spoonfeed. If u want to travel abroad, is anyone discouraging you? Go to the embassy and secure a visa, get your ticket n bta, do your online hotel reservations u are good to go. On landing, u don't need any dick or Harry to put u thru if u are smart, ask questions and get your ans correct. Staying abroad is not rosy like most people will think. I hv seen people who came here and return back to Nigeria after seeing the reality of living outside home. My advice is, landlord travel and see.

And the discouraging RAP continues.
Always bringing out ugly scenarios. Have you given a case of someone making it there or Do you mean all the people that come there always die on the long run.
Stop discouraging people from coming abroad, Nigeria ain't any better.
Read my other posts and see how to better migrate. In any case I do not run the embassies. I also do not control Sahara desert or Atlantic ocean. You are always free to chose any of your choice to travel abroad.

People at home have a certain mindset of life in America.... they only need to arrive... and all things will be bright and beautiful....just like on TV.... as long as you are willing to work hard. When those abroad say life is not as easy as you may think... it is called discouragement... because that is not what you want to hear. Yes...I am on vacation ..
loving it .... I should encourage you to invest half your life savings or borrow money and come enjoy just like me. What you dont factor in... is I have massive support... do I have to pay $150+ per nite in a cheap hotel?no... I pay zero for shelter...would you?...do I have to pay for food?...transport? No.. not a kobo....would you?...Would you have people showing you the ropes?...where to shop or get whatever?..no...but I do. It is not discouraging you from coming but for you to plan well and have every thing in order before you travel. I'll encourage everyone to come visit... don't overstay and be trapped here.... this can be a very lonely and a very rough place ... wayyy rougher than one weather Naija. There is sooo much to learn here...business ideas would just be jumping out at you. Dont see alerts as discouragement. ... same as people retiring or whatever and returning home... ignoring what those on ground are saying.... seeing it as same discouragement. Bottom line... look before you leap.
. Well said, and to add to it, If you don't have paper's or a legitimate way of getting them, maybe you should just go on vacation as he said! Things have changed, with all the terrorism, immigration is a more serious issue now.

Living in the US illegally is like a death sentence in my view. You would just be existing here not living your life. I don't know how all these Mexicans cope, anyway they have a lot of family here so guess it won't be that bad for them. As for Nigerians, living illegally is a no no. Life is too short to live like that. You can't drive, can't get any meaningful job, can't even visit your country. Is that one life? What's the essence of life if you can't do all these. People that live illegally I can't even imagine the trauma they are passing through. It is not for the faint hearted.

Bebe2,

To be honest it is not fashionable to be honest when dealing with our fellow Nigerians, especially if you live abroad. They start calling you enemy of progress.

I have actively discouraged Nigerians from coming to the West ANYHOW.

We know what we suffered back then. A close friend froze to death on the street, sleeping rough. It could have been me. Once money was exhausted, we had no place to sleep. His miserable death haunts me till today.

But when you tell people, they say "but you have made it now, you very fine now, it cannot be as bad as 9ja na, etc." I don't even know what "made it" mean in their imagination.

I always advice people to come as postgrad students, with enough money in their pockets. That way, even if they have to return home, the time wasn't wasted.

I have discouraged many social media "friends" from crossing Sahara desert with the help of a "sponsor" to Italy. Those who did not listen. They are paying off 30 to 50K Euros now doing prostitution. Some have been honest enough to say "I wish I listened to your advice".

Nobody is afraid of anyone. Many abroad just do not want others to make the mistake they made, either by abandoning their studies, travelling with anyhow documents, coming with tourist visa and overstaying, quitting a good job to travel abroad, etc.

An example: a cousin of mine worked for about 11 years in a first generation bank. He quit and came abroad. I just bumped into him one day. He jumped and hugged me. I did not recognise him right away, being tall & big guy now. He died here in diaspora a couple of years ago. He regretted his decision to travel abroad, despite having a wife and 3 kids here.

A friend also quit a first generation bank job to travel. He regretted it daily. He died of cancer here around 5 years back, leaving 4 kids behind.

Both lived abroad in regret, after quitting well paid jobs in 9ja. Those of us who left as teenagers took it more in our stride, after the difficult first few years.

People should be well informed before travelling. Not just anyhow, to any destination believing you can make huge money anywhere abroad.

We have ruined our name enough abroad: scam/fraud, drug trafficking, prostitution, etc. Mostly due to unplanned travelling out.
why all of them come dey die at the endundecided

Tnx God for your life ooootongue
