Hello all, I am based in the UK and my wife just joined me over a year ago. Now she is preggers. I want to invite my mother inlaw to visit us from Nigeria just in time for the delivery of the baby, say for 6 months. My mother inlaw is over 60 and was/is a house wife with no bonds nor pension. She just has a bank account with her maintenance money which we send to her periodically. I am the one to sponsor her and she would stay at my place. I understand all visitor visas are grouped under standard vsisitor visa now. Who has experienced this or who has an idea of what is expected of me for the application please? Cheers |
Re: General UK Visa Enquiries - Part 3 by ekpotek: 7:07pm On Apr 28, 2017 |
mialate: @Mialate. Sorry to hear about your refusal. It is very painful after one have put in everything to make it work. The reasons for the refusal is petty as I know a lot of single applicants getting visa. It's just hard luck. |
Re: General UK Visa Enquiries - Part 3 by ekpotek: 7:12pm On Apr 28, 2017 |
Brightingsus: Yes all visitor visas are grouped under standard visitor. You have no problem just filled the online application on her behalf and provide all the necsssry documents. You may need to have someone accompany her to the TLS centre for submission. 1 Like |

mialate: This is discriminatory,it has never been heard anywhere that you are denied a visa based on your marital status,i'm cork sure if it were based on sexual orientation this would have sparked some outrage......Do not reapply without asking for a review on this |
Re: General UK Visa Enquiries - Part 3 by ekpotek: 9:02pm On Apr 28, 2017 |
Solatium: @Mailata. I absolutely agree with@Solatium that you should write for a review. Eventough they may not over turn the ECO decision, the review will be kept in your file for future reference in case you apply again. |

Brightingsus: Document from your side Copy of your passport data page Copy of your wife passport data page Utility bill as proof of address 6 month bank statement Employment contract paper Letter of invitation of your mother in law written to British high commission in Nigeria. The letter should basically state that you are inviting your mother in law for xxxx purpose. How long she will spent and that you will be responsible for her trip and accommodation. Document on your mother in law side 6 month bank statement Photos of her with you/daughter in Nigeria etc Any documents to proof existing relationship such telephone call log etc. 2 Likes |

In fact very discriminatory and the ECO took the decision on Saturday (22nd April) didn't know they work on Saturdays. Apparently he or She didn't go through my scanned documents just decided looking at my online application. And dropped full name on my refusal note. Solatium: |

Re: General UK Visa Enquiries - Part 3 by Vicjustice: 10:20pm On Apr 28, 2017 |
b1211:The issues will not be about your wife sponsoring the trip as it is allowed for a spouse to be a sponsor, but the ECO could have issue with the total amount in your wife's account (which is N1.4m) because, if she bought tickets for everyone from it, how much would be left to live on? This said, i recognise that your wife has another £800, plus your N350k, therefore, the whole thing now comes to credibility and merit: and as your wife already holds a visa, and does not pose immigration risk, her baby's visa is almost guaranteed: therefore, i am of the opinion that your own visa would be approved if things are done orderly. Include the both accounts of your wife and add your own account. Good luck. |

Please there is a part of the visa application that asked that 'What money is available to pay for your initial expenses such as accommodation, feeding yourself and any other dependants (if applicable)? I have already filled in a portion earlier on on travel expenses, accommodation, and living costs. How is this any different so I wnt give a contradictory info. How best do i answer this. Thanks. |

Hi all, I intend attending my convocation in june, have a letter from school. Applying from Nigeria, but staying with a friend on a degree there also. Was wondering if this sort of arrangement would pass? I'm also employed and would only be away for a week and have a base salary of 200k monthly (although I've earned almost 100k higher every other month still from my employer). Atm, current balance is just above 150k. Wondering if I can go ahead with the visa application now? or wait till I have much more (although i feel I'm a bit late since convocation is june) PS: I just returned from a UK scholarship in September. Visa expired in January. Moreso I've planned flight plus living expenses = 400k |

Thanks a lot @ Justwise and ekpotek. Please I want to ask another question. In the section where they asked about spouse details. My wife's passport contains her maiden name as her surname because she got the passport before we got married. The surname I am going to write for her must it be the one on that passport or my own surname once we are married. Though she is not going with me but seems there is a space for her passport number on that form. Thanks. |

ekpotek:Thanks for pointing that out, i didn't realise it, i actually thought i saw eight hundred Pound Sterling. Thant means, she is financially capable and worthy of sponsoring her family. |
Re: General UK Visa Enquiries - Part 3 by Vicjustice: 8:21am On Apr 29, 2017 |
Dr9ce:The first one that you filed is about the cost of the mentioned items, while the other question is in regard to the total amount that you have set aside for the entire trip which includes the costs of other miscellaneous items that are not mentioned, and might accumulate during the course of your stay in the country. For example: if you stated that the cost of your... Flight ticket: N350k Accommodation: N150K Living costs: N100k Total: N600k Remember that these fixed amounts do not include the costs of other miscellaneous items like tour bus rides, taxi fares, tickets for events, souvenir shopping, etc: so, that question is intended to make you state the total amount that you have budgeted for the trip to cover every cost both the foreseeable and unforeseeable expenses. Does this help? 1 Like |

ekpotek: Many thanks Ekpotek. I've heard a few people say you need to prove she would return to Nigeria after the visit which could come in form of ties. I am still ting to figure out what these would be as she is in a rented apartment and was not quite employed to have pension. |
Re: General UK Visa Enquiries - Part 3 by ekpotek: 10:23am On Apr 29, 2017 |
Brightingsus: At her age which is over 60 will count in her favour as you keeping her in the UK will be a burden to you. This the ECO knows. Proofing ties to return are for younger applicants who are capable of getting illegal employment in the UK or over staying. I think there is information somewhere that permit you to bring your parents over 70 years to come and live with you permanently in the UK. Others gurus can also contribute here. Tailored your application to show that she is depended on you for everything including accommodation, monthly upkeep etc. 1 Like |

Re: General UK Visa Enquiries - Part 3 by Brightingsus: 12:00pm On Apr 29, 2017 |
ekpotek: Need I mention my wife, who joined me last year on spouse settlement visa, has a sister in this UK as well. However my wife's sister has a pending application to stay here in the UK which has not been decided on. Do I need to include my wife's sister's name too as well as my wife as family in the UK? We would prefer not to include my wife's sister as her application to remain in the UK is still pending. Anyway I, as well as my wife's sister regularly send my mother inlaw money monthly which contributes to most of her livelihood. If it shows in her bank account; would the ECO, or whoever deciding the application, say that she depends more on UK family funds, thereby a greater chance that she might want to remain in the Uk and not go back? Someone told me we need to tailor my mother inlaw's visit application to such that most of her livelihood comes from funds her children in Nigeria maintain her with. My mother inlaw has my wife and my wife's sister in the UK and three other children in Nigeria. |
Re: General UK Visa Enquiries - Part 3 by ekpotek: 12:17pm On Apr 29, 2017 |
Brightingsus: Yes you have to disclosed your wife sister details. This disclosure does not in any way affect your wife sister application. The home office has extensive investigative ability so there is no need to hide this inform. There is a strong compelling reason for your mother in law to visit. This is what you must proof with evidence. The most important thing is to demonstrate that you have adequate funds to sponsor her visit. The home office already have a file on you since you successfully sponsored your wife. 1 Like |

mialate: There is no known format of doing that, just put pen to paper and write anything logical, your creativity and deep thinking can help you a great deal............A Quick look at Human rights and 1950 convention might be of help, you can look that up and let part of it for your basis of argument.here is some part of it which I culled out that can aid you. Article 14 - discrimination Article 14 contains a prohibition of discrimination. This prohibition is broad in some ways, and narrow in others. It is broad in that it prohibits discrimination under a potentially unlimited number of grounds. While the article specifically prohibits discrimination based on "sex, race, colour, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, association with a national minority, property, birth or other status", the last of these allows the court to extend to Article 14 protection to other grounds not specifically mentioned such as has been done regarding discrimination based on a person's sexual orientation. At the same time the article's protection is limited in that it only prohibits discrimination with respect to rights under the Convention. Thus, an applicant must prove discrimination in the enjoyment of a specific right that is guaranteed elsewhere in the Convention (e.g. discrimination based on sex - Article 14 - in the enjoyment of the right to freedom of expression - Article 10). It has been said that laws regarding familial sexual relationships (or incest) are in breach of Article 14 when combined with Article 8. [26] Protocol 12 extends this prohibition to cover discrimination in any legal right, even when that legal right is not protected under the Convention, so long as it is provided for in national law. |
Re: General UK Visa Enquiries - Part 3 by ekpotek: 3:24pm On Apr 29, 2017 |
Dr9ce: @vicjustice have provided the answer. You are requested to enter the amount you have available for the trip. I.e. The amount of fund you willing to commit for the trip. Normally this will be higher than the cost of the trip as foreseen and unforeseen situation may arise during your visit e.g. You may require medical attention if you fall sick which you must pay for if you do not have a health travel insurance. |
