CACAWA:
well, if you insist ooo
He was only doing trial and error.

So if a= √x
And b = √(x+15)
Then we want a+b =15

So the trial and error method he did was to say let a and b = 1 and 14 , 2 and 13, 3 and 12.......7 and 8

Then for each of those guesses (which of course will not be listable if the question had say, 99 instead of 15) he said;

If x = a squared
So let's see if b = √ (x + 15) ( using that same x we just got) will give us the number we want b to be. (As earlier listed out)

So he looked at all those whole numbers..Lol...Before arriving at x = 7 squared = 49
And b = √(49 + 15) = 8 which is the same as what we paired up.

Now do you get it?

Disclaimer...This method (as mathematicians will say) does not provide all possible solutions for x and hence, fails the "reductio ad absurdum" test.

Thanks. ..I appreciate

Okay break it down for me in less than three minutes or three minutes
1. Reading the question nd understanding it
2. Attempting to answer it in your head with the maths involved
3. Replying, (with Nigerian network) nd then typing English nd maths together nd submitting without error, bear in mind that he is in a hurried state mentally cos he will want to prove himself as the first if actually he solved it himself
GodIsBiafran:

No. Yungmillion tried to post the thread before and it was deleted. But Akin saw the original post so that gave him about 2 minutes headstart. That was how Akin was able to post the solution quickly after Yung reposted it. All the same, the guy did it in less than 3 minutes. Impressive, I think.

My guy calm down. You are being unreasonable. For you to think am Akin is absurd. Anyway, here is my thinking: You have a problem and you seek the easiest solution is called being clever. Akin counted. And found a solution. Of course counting by its nature can only give you an INTEGER solution. He did not say that was the ONLY solution - he told you "put 49 for X and see what happens." I am following this thread closely because its mine. And since 49 satisfied the equation Akin was correct. That is original and clever - that's the point I was trying to make. I never said you are not intelligent, I just think Akin is more intelligent than you, no offence.

YungMill I disagree slightly with you. It is clear that Akin is more creatively minded than cacawa but I think you shouldn't belittle cacawa's intelligence. My only problem with him is that he thinks intelligence is about solving complicated equations. If he can losen up a little bit, I think he might be able to give Akin a run for his money - although I seriously doubt it. Akin always has something underneath his sleeves.

if you are looking for fun, get a girlfriend..I'm not GAYbriel.

Also, it's not grammar, it's a mathematical term for the validity of a mathematical method.

That test is performed on all so-called mathematical steps (or methods) to scream out "wuru wuru to the answer" kind of solution.

I'm sure you heard about one Nigerian Dr who solved an age long mathematical hypothesis..He was able to prove it.

His method was subjected to many mathematical tests for validity and so on.

Do you think your method would even be acceptable?? Well maybe to your NL pack of followers...But not to higher minds.

2. It probably took him less than 30 seconds to read and solve the problem.

Okay i get it.

You guys want me to be creative but I'm being rigid.

First, maths is not an ART, it's a SCIENCE.
Unless you re talking quantitative aptitude (I keep trying to make a distinction between both)

If you know how many years I have been in the game, well, let's just say, wait until you have a PhD, then you can begin to understand why 'creativity" must also be very robust and guided.

When one prof comes and punctures your steps, you'd be left gasping for breath.

As for the other guy being too clever, well... Remember I asked for us to do a competition.

Fine, he should try me. Drop a question I cannot solve, and after 30 minutes, he must post the solution. Mind you, I'm not into riddles or quantitative reasoning (unlike the OP).

Challenge me with high level mathematical proofs please.

Bruh! You are too emotional. The only Gaybriel here is you! Stalking me up and down. You succeeded in taking a fun, inquisitive thread and turned it into a long boring lecture on mathematical proofs. Let me ask you a very simple question: Is 49 a solution to your equation? Yes or No.

My guy high level mathematical proofs require YEARS of training. It will not prove that you have high IQ or you are an original thinker. That's what we have been trying to tell you. Natural intelligence is what this thread is about. This is where Akin beats you. If you wanna open a thread about HIGH LEVEL MATHEMATICAL PROOFS then go ahead and do so and invite Akin. So if 49 is a solution then the counting method used to find that solution is a good enough method for that solution. Get it?

Okay FK I see what you are saying. Cacewa is one of those guys that repeats everything he sees in a textbook. You don't need a high IQ to do that but many years of experience (He even said that himself). He should open a thread on 'high level' mathematical proofs instead of derailing this one. He seems so desperate to be accorded intellectual respect. He is intelligent but he needs to calm down.

So if 49 is a solution then the counting method used to find that solution is a good enough method for that solution. Get it?
if the answer was meant to be a decimal, the counting method would fail.

That is exactly why the ITERATION method was introduced as. Avalid mathematical method for "Counting". The only difference is that it counts by itself until it gets to the actual answer and it stops.

The iteration method is not just any "creative" solution either, it was developed using the Fibonacci sequence.

Now, here is what would work ;

Go on your calculator and type :
0+1=
Ans

Now, type :

(15*Ans) - √(Ans(Ans+15)) =

Now keep pressing the "=" key until the answer stops changing.

It will stay as 49.

That is iteration. Again that doesn't tell you if there are other solutions.

So to find all other solutions, you need to find out the first derivative, equate to zero, fond its roots, and the iteration process in another direction Way from the first.

cool

Solution
Using simple logic: Imagine the animals all raise one leg. When this is done, there will be a total of 80 – 28 = 52 legs visible. Then imagine each of the animals raising a second leg, then there will be 52 – 28 = 24 legs left. Since the chickens have only two legs, all the 24 legs must belong to the rabbits. Now since the rabbits have already raised two legs, then each of the rabbits must be contributing 2 legs to the 24. Therefore there are 24 divided 2 = 12 rabbits. Therefore, since there are 28 animals in total, then there are 28 – 12 = 16 chickens.

I don't get this, if a chicken raises two legs, then it falls down. Poor chickens.

Lol. Anytime I find a puzzle with its solution is attached to a prize. I do the following.

1. Copy the entire puzzle and paste in Google search

And voila, the answer is back in a less than a minute enabling me to solve this puzzle and win the prize way ahead of my competitors.

This is the link to the solution of this puzzle already solved in 2001.

Same puzzle, different variables. Notice the winner of this puzzle used exactly the same steps.

You are welcome.

As someone who is a big fan of pure reasoning and logic, I have decided that once a year I will offer 10 000 naira to any Nairalander who is able to solve a unique math problem. The goal is to appreciate people who show a unique ability for clear thinking and originality. This year the award will go to the first Nlander to solve this problem:
A farmer has a small farm of chickens and rabbits. There are 28 heads in total and 80 legs in total. By using simple logic and reasoning find out how many chickens he has and how many rabbits he has. You have to SHOW YOUR WORK. IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO GET THE RIGHT ANSWER, YOU HAVE TO SHOW HOW (WITHOUT USING FORMAL MATHEMATICS – YOU CAN HOWEVER USE FORMAL MATH TO SHOW THAT YOUR REASONING IS CORRECT) YOU SOLVE IT USING PURE REASONING AND LOGIC. IF YOU SOLVE IT USING FORMAL MATHETICS YOU WILL NOT GET THE PRIZE AWARD. IF YOU ARE THE FIRST TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM IN THE MANNER DESCRIBED ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PM ME YOUR BANK DETAILS AND YOU GET YOUR 10,000 NAIRA.

Good luck.
YungMill
I came late but this was a very cheap one. Did not even take me a minute to solve. If you have tougher ones, please paste them and mention me.

It is not necessarily true. Do not say what you are not sure of. How did you know he cheated? Moreover, the puzzle is extremely easy. It did not take me 60 seconds to solve. I only set out 2 equations and the answers were out so fast. This is normal JSS2/JSS1 word problems involving simultaneous equations. The fact that you cheat does not mean that everyone does. What's the fun in cheating? huh?
