Most Nigerians who have bought into the Giant of Africa thing find it surprising that life is better in some African countries compared to the frustration in Nigeria. for those who don't believe in the development indices used in assessing countries, you should realise that all developed countries score very high on them and that's what makes life better in those countries. you don't find electricity, water, healthcare, education, transportation, strong institutions and effective government lacking in those countries. you can tell the future of a country by looking at government policy and initiatives in these critical areas.

there are some electric bulbs which are still in use in Nigeria, we called them onion bulbs (incandescent bulbs) in Ghana. They were banned a decade back and you don't find them on the market now. before the ban was implemented the Energy commission (Ghana), through a programme, had to supply energy efficient bulbs (fluorescent) to all households to replace the incandescent bulbs in use. those bulbs were not energy efficient. moreover, fluorescent bulbs last longer - sometimes 8X times longer compared to incandescent bulbs. Now the commission is looking at promoting LED bulbs, which are more efficient than the fluorescent bulbs. The effect of such policy is reduced energy consumption for households, resulting in some cost savings too.

We should have some informed discussions aside the usual banter that goes on here. A form of peer review of African countries will be insightful. Let's know what is happening in the various countries. what policies and programs are being carried out by our governments and how will those policies move our countries forward?

If you take a good look at those development indices, it's just a reflection of what's on the ground. We have to create the countries we want for ourselves. the Americans have proven themselves; the Europeans have done it and same for the Asians. Africa, why always me?
