mufutau55: Okay Hajji. - Firstly, we should know that location of Boreholes is predicted by Seismic data. How does Seismic data work? Geologists send electrical charges into the ground when carrying out the test. These charges measure resistivity and send results to the resistivity metre.. Different earth materials have different resistivities (see diagram below). There's also what we call overlapping resistivity where 2 or more materials have the same range of resistivity measurement (see Tap water and porous linestone). In this case, you think you're drilling for water but you get limestone. Secondly, For borehole drillers out there, it's better to say the truth to the client. Most of them are afraid if they tell you that your water reservoir is small from test results, client will abandon plan to drill and they won't make money. That's why they lie. Everyone should know this.. A borehole is a prediction, A gamble, A probability with varying chances of success. Seismic data is not 100% reliable. Even oil Wells drilled with millions of dollars get abandoned. There are alot of bitter experiences out there. A Professor i know drilled 6 Boreholes and didn't get viable water. He later had to settle for a well. I hope I've arranged my thoughts well 3 Likes

WorldAmbassador: I thought you had to treat water from a borehole. Looks like its not compulsory, only when the water has issues? |

lorhema: Where I live, I guess people are happy to get water from a borehole(as opposed to fetching water from the stream, or paying for a tanker to deliver water). A lot of people do not treat water from the borehole. Some probably boil the water before drinking. |

lorhema: Nah... here in Asaba, we use untreated borehole water for everything except drinking. |

Fogman: Did mine early last year, so prices might have gone up a bit. The land is in Sango Ota and the plan was for a block of 4 x 3bed flats. I paid 36k to sort out tax clearance certificates (as I am in diaspora) and 30k for the stamp duty. By the way, this was for stamp duty alone. 1 Like |

Good day guys, a friend of mine is at the plastering stage in his building, the bricklayer advised him not to plaster any part of the house he intends to use TILES on,since it will be covered with tiles, citing cost saving. Please how beneficial or otherwise is this advise? |

Very good idea for instance for my site I bought tank first after foundation it's was stolen. My site supervisor advice we should dig soak away and use the sand to fill up the foundation and still have free water anytime raining bricklayers no need to buy water. The soak away serve 2 purpose sand for sand fill of foundation still have free water anytime rain fall. Cost saving yes. akinolaolujide: 1 Like |

Some context might help here, do you mean stamp duty for perfecting title documents ? If so in Lagos it's a must when processing your consent. If you mean just stamp duty for a legal document, I don't know that but I know it's done but not expensive. Fogman: |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by mavverick: 4:43am On May 07, 2017 |
This applies to walls only eg bathroom and kitchen. No smooth plastering just rough rubbing and that's it. Some artisans also insist they want to be the one to rough rub whilst plastering (make sure no extra costs). But the norm is to rough rub, it will. Not be smooth and it would not be blocks. Hope this helps. PrinceLat: 2 Likes |

Kadiri07: wood is classier, and easier to remodel/change if you so desire. block is cheap and simple |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by skimanski(m): 12:56pm On May 07, 2017 |
Kadiri07: BLOCK ADVANTAGE OVER WOODEN CABINET Cheaper but not significantly depending on the particular wood Last Longer (Can last for as long as you have it there) Washable anytime you feel it required Water friendly in terms of leakages WOODEN CABINET ADVANTAGE OVER BLOCK You can cover all the partitions of Wooden cabinet (to do that in block will require you using wood, which boils down to wood at the end of the day) Its easier to partition to get more Useful storage Space Un-arguably the finer of the two Easier to create any Design you want You can have top cabinets easily and cheaper (Imagine trying to do Block and concrete cabinet as Upper cabinet Madam fit no even dey stand under the cabinet ) You can easily change to any design of your choice any day any time AT THE END OF THE DAY IT BOILS DOWN TO THE OWNER'S CHOICE, PENDING ON A LOT OF FAVORABLE FACTORS 2 Likes |

https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2017/04/ways-rich-africa-can-work-for-poor-africans At the age of 20, I aspired to be president; and at the age of 30, I was appointed to work in the office of the presidency of my country. A decade on, I developed a healthy respect and deep sense of humility about what it takes to successfully lead and fulfill expectations of all citizens in a poor developing African state. With 70% of Africans under the age of 30 – mostly poor unemployed and unemployable – I believe there is a dire need for a heightened sense of urgency in the face of growing global and regional political uncertainty. Centuries ago, Africans were caught off guard by the advent of the First Industrial Revolution, which manifested itself in superior fighting and transport technology. Centuries later past the Scramble for Africa, wars of independence from colonialism, and half a century of struggle to attain economic independence, the continent is confronted with the rising challenge of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. While the first revolution was dominated by land ownership and stretched over hundreds of years, the fourth revolution is primarily about knowledge ownership and is moving at the speed of light. This new challenge comes at a time when leaders are grappling with the reality of the failure of past growth to create jobs and reduce poverty and inequality. Leaders around the continent are facing myriad challenges, ranging from investment downgrades and droughts exacerbated by climate change, to illegal migration and civil protests. More worryingly, the 2016 Ibrahim Index of African Governance highlighted that, among others, the rule of law has declined in over 30 countries since 2006. The path to inclusive growth In this context, the theme of the forthcoming World Economic Forum on Africa in Durban, South Africa, in May 2017 is Achieving Inclusive Growth through Responsive and Responsible Leadership. Building on global-oriented conversations at our Annual Meeting in Davos this year on Responsive and Responsible Leadership, we hope to expand the conversation on identifying new mechanisms to deliver inclusive growth and development with the regional and global leaders gathered in Durban. In addition, there is a sense of urgency as more and more young people are turning to violence to express their frustration about lack of progress. Countries like Estonia have shown that it is possible to craft a national digital social order that delivers for all. Call to action: How are you leading change for the 70% under 30 years of age? Please join the #ShapingAfrica conversation and put your issue on the agenda in Durban. Accordingly, below are three areas in which the continent’s leaders in Durban will explore how to grapple with these new challenges while addressing the inclusivity challenge by embracing the Fourth Industrial Revolution. 1 Like |

Kadiri07:. Either you're using entirely wood(HDF/HDM,etc,etc) or Block/Tiles which you will still use wood as partitions and doors entirely depends on how you use it. Liken your usual wardrobe( complete wood or block with wood as door) for clothing to that of the kitchen cabinet and it's usage. How long does it take to wear and tear? It's up to the user. Durable/better you can go with block/tile and wooden doors to match your tile colour. Elegance/aesthetics you can go with wood of good quality. |

diordaves: I have read the link. NO CONNECTION. How can it even be my own assignment, when you are the one that posted the information? Just be honest and agree that though it is "useful, general information", it is irrelevant in this particular thread of "building construction". ...and dont get overly defensive or even attempt to try to pull wool over anyone's eyes over this. 1 Like |

Excuzeme: Let's extrapolation from details and statistics contained in the article. So Africa nay Nigeria has an army of restless youths in their 30s with below par purchasing power. When you build for investment rentals, what age demographic is your target market? If you dwell on this, you will understand why there's high rental default. We are designing and building houses for a demographic that can't afford them. Africa, including Nigeria don't trade with one another. So we go to China, Turkey to buy doors for example. But do you know Egypt has top quality doors with competence in Egypt? Can we link that competence to Benin Edo State where the woodwork trade is dying out? 3D printing. Will this kill architecture? Civil engineering? Disruptive technology. A 21yr old in South Africa has discovered blocks made out of waste paper and got funding. Is this the future or there's more? I can go on and on. So with obviously failing leadership, can the diaspora step in and step up? Can we bring back tools and machinery and technology and pass them on to our artisans and builders? Can the diaspora be the catalyst for Nigeria to plug into the next wave of wealth creation? Internet. 3 Likes |
