LionDeLeo: dump-ass.. i know ur probably one of those back benchers that hide under ur lockers to play card while the maths teacher is teaching.... now what the OP is saying is this::: our maths teachers used to tell us that the "O" in BODMAS mean "of" but now we have attended high institutions and now know it means ORDER not OF... receive sense.. 10 Likes |

phililp: Illiterate. What do you understand by "order" in mathematics context? After that, draw a clear line distinction between "order" and "of". 3 Likes |

Seriously we need more than an apology, this is an eye opener anyways, guess there are more to things like this |

Re: Our Maths Teachers Must Apologise To Us by LionDeLeo: 5:38pm On May 08, 2017 |
phililp: Then "order". Besides, is BODMAS an acronym or just an aid to memory? Again, who told you BODMAS is even a formula? 1 Like |

phililp: I guess you have just stated the only one you know. Now, is BODMAS a formula? If I decide to carry out division operation before multiplication, will I be wrong? Or I decide to solve subtraction b4 addition, will the result be wrong? Or if I carry out division before square or square roots, will the result be different? If they all give me same results, then note these approaches are contrary to what BODMAS dictates. Have you seen how you throw your illiteracy to the surface. BODMAS is just an aid to memory for primary school children, not a formula, get that into your skull. 4 Likes |

LionDeLeo: who said BODMAS is a formula.. u be here expoiting ur ilitracy... BODMAS is a hint to memorise the order at which we deal with numbers.. and back in those days our teachers would tell us that the "O" means of(multiplication) which is wrong... now someone pointed that out and u bagan forming "arnold sabi all" and say he talking bullshit. bros u still need sense... infact come forward... yes you.. dont be afraid just come.. kneel down lemme pray for ya ewu awusa 5 Likes 1 Share |

LionDeLeo: look at the example i in the picture i posted above.. maybe ur chinko phone wont let u see it... look at the first example is there any square root or square? but yet order still applies.... atulu... u and mr. president have same mentality... no sense upstairs receive mathematical sense 3 Likes |

phililp: Stop spitting saliva unnecessarily. "Bracket of division multiplication, addition and subtraction" and "bracket order multiplication, addition and subtraction" don't really mean anything, they are just aids to memory. From that your screen shot, perform subtraction before addition or multiplication before subtraction and tell me if you won't arrive at the same result. Aid to memory for primary school children is what you are here forming math on. Was it not still helpful then even with the "of"? Meanwhile, with respect to the emboldened, it appears you also have problem with English. Illiterates everywhere. 1 Like |
Re: Our Maths Teachers Must Apologise To Us by LionDeLeo: 6:13pm On May 08, 2017 |
phililp: I doubt if you know what BODMAS means. Simple aid to memory is what you are forming mathematician on. Now perform subtraction before addition or multiplication before division, which is contrary to BODMAS and tell me if the results will be different. Funny how you quickly talk about phone. If nairaland has an application for displaying the facilities used by members for posting, I'm very sure you will hide that thing you call phone. You want a screen shot of my phone? 1 Like |

Ichietome: Example pls. As in come up with that complex mathematics solvable with BODMAS that cannot be solved without complying to the BODMAS order. Meanwhile, I repeat, BODMAS is nothing but aid to memory. 1 Like |

Nothing wrong here. One of teachers way back called it as BEDMAS i.e Bracket, Exponent etc etc 2 Likes |
Re: Our Maths Teachers Must Apologise To Us by Nobody: 9:20pm On May 08, 2017 |
phililp:No lol. Yes, of means multiplication, but 'orders' there means, like indices sort of. For example anything raised to the power of 2 is a second order. So basically orders there means you should solve anything raised to a power next |
Re: Our Maths Teachers Must Apologise To Us by Friedyokes: 9:56pm On May 08, 2017 |
LionDeLeo:SOLVE THESE AND DO NOT USE BODMAS THEN TELL ME THE ANSWER 30÷-5+4×-2+14=? 1+2×5=? Nd for clarification bodmas is a rule that shows the order to which mathematical operations are carried out so the misinterpretation of that 'O' by teachers was wrong |
Re: Our Maths Teachers Must Apologise To Us by LionDeLeo: 10:13pm On May 08, 2017 |
Friedyokes: 4×-2=-8 30÷-5=-6 +14 Now -8-6+14=0 Note, I performed multiplication b4 division (against BODMAS). Second case, of course 5 & 2 must be multiplied first before adding to 1. But I assure you, if you have cases involving several multiplication, addition and subtraction, I can solve them in which ever order without necessarily taking BODMAS into cognisance. I repeat, BODMAS is simply a way of reminding you in case you forget, nothing more. It is not a formula. Meanwhile, is this a complex math? Do you even call this math? Go and find out the difference between math and arithmetic. I was expecting something like one complex integral calculus. Dude, math is an important tool in my field of study and practice. 4 Likes |

Re: Our Maths Teachers Must Apologise To Us by Nobody: 10:25pm On May 08, 2017 |
phililp: From the examples you've given here, I think our teachers weren't wrong after all. Examples 1, 3 & 4 is in line with the 'of' they taught us. As for e.g 2, I don't think anyone would rely on BODMAS to solve it. |
Re: Our Maths Teachers Must Apologise To Us by Friedyokes: 10:39pm On May 08, 2017 |
LionDeLeo:you have to agree that math of this grade is considered high in the primary/js level where bodmas is being taught ...people with higher education may find it easier to calculate ....but then this is what is being taught to children ...and the point for creating bodmas was to simply it for children ...so would you say telling children that the 'O' means of while it means order(powers and square root) is right? which was the point of the picture |
Re: Our Maths Teachers Must Apologise To Us by LionDeLeo: 10:52pm On May 08, 2017 |
Friedyokes: Then, I ask again, what exactly is the difference between "order" and "of" in mathematics context? But let me answer that. In principle, no difference. How? Example; 4^3 implies 4 to the power of 3 or the "order" in which 4 should be multiplied by itself is 3. How do you do that? 4×4×4=64. Is this not multiplication (of)? 1 Like |
Re: Our Maths Teachers Must Apologise To Us by Friedyokes: 11:01pm On May 08, 2017 |
LionDeLeo:okay when u were taught bodmas did u interpret the 'of' to mean multiplication nd square root ...or when ur teacher taught u he or she said 'of' means square root nd powers ....remember we were taught as kids |
