Hi,

I will be talking from experience here.

The day I got my landed immigrant visa to Canada was also the day I got an employment as a Financial Controller of an oil service company in Port Harcourt. The Salary and Benefits was about 5 times of what I was earning in one of the big 4 accounting firm in Nigeria, then. it was a very painful and agonizing decision for me. Leaving the known for unknown. But I determined to give a better life to my 2 weeks old daughter, then, and her future siblings.

After committing everything into God's hands, I took the decision to leave and come to Canada. The first two years was very rough but got a peaceful and focused life. I knew that if I stayed focus and envision where i wanted to be in 3-5 years, and with the grace and mercy of Almighty God, I could get to that level. Desire is to be a Chartered Accountant, which I already qualified for in Nigeria.

I pursued the vision, within 3 years of arriving in Canada. I passed my C.A exams and became a C.A. Six months after I qualified I got a job as an Assistant Controller with a big Multinational Company in Canada.

Today, all glory be to God. My coasts has been enlarged. My children have greater opportunities to pursue their various dreams. I am not saying Nigeria doesn't provides the same opportunities but one has advantage over the other. Security of life/property is very important.

Please pray about it and let God leads you in the right direction.

What I will advise you is that don't come here without having all the necessary documentations or visa. Coming to Canada with "assumptions" will lead you to difficult live.

Thanks
Thank you for sharing this.

OK, seriously. Tell us the states in Nigeria where a man earning N100K can build a decent (by that I mean at least a 2 or 3 bedroom bungalow w/ 2 bathrooms) house in 2017. Show us where such things are possible please I'm sure many readers on here would want to know how to build houses on a 100K salary and still cover regular living costs.

"Can save up over time" depending on state and type of house. Do you read at all? E. g in Ibadan where land and cost of living isn't as expensive as in Lagos, over a period of 4 to 5 yrs it's possible. It will be a good gradual process

Take care.

There's a lot of specious reasoning on both sides of this discussion. Ultimately, the decision will be based on the personal circumstances of the person in question. If it was me, I will migrate. However, I think it is far fetched to say people working for TOTAL want to migrate to Canada. From personal experience and first hand information, what they want to do is move their family to Canada while they remain in Nigeria working. I know more than 50 people doing this. They are not afraid for themselves as they make more money in the oil industry in Nigeria. They just want a plan b for their families. For most of them immediately they lay hands on the Pali, the family moves back to Nigeria. Talk about having the best of both worlds.

My advise will be that if you are struggling in Nigeria, by that I mean you don't earn at least $60,000 equivalent annually in Nigeria, if you have the opportunity to make a planned move to a good country, please go. I am not saying people should migrate illegally as that would be hell on earth. You don't want to subject yourself to that trust me

No they don't. The husband in that situation works in naija and goes back and forth. It makes sense because he'd rather keephis job with TOTAL than start hustling here. After his wife and kids get pali, and he's been going back and forth for some time,he inevitable has to make a decision as the marriage can't continue in that manner. That's when the wife gives an ultimatum. Reside here full time or we get a divorce and you go back to naija. Once you've tasted sanity and a well ran country, especially with kids, you're not going back to that. It'd be contradicting your reasoning for leaving naija if you end up going back any way. Really what's there for a youth? The people you know may be exceptions, but I've met people in Canada who were in such a situation. 99.9% of the time the wife simply won't go back there with the kids. No way. Only to visit at best.

You just called him an animal as he predicted. You are really so pained it seems you can't make any valid points without insults even in your oyibo land where you reside you are not at peace with yourself and it shows in every post you write, tufiakwa.

huh? I didn't say he's an animal living in the zoo. Listen, I know you're a troll and you get off on this. But I think you should work on your insecurity Ms. Enemy of progress. You're just upset you have no future in naija and you're stuck there. You claim you love Nigeria, so many opportunities, blah..blah.. Yet you're on EVERY Nigerian/Canadian thread. Why ? I've lived in both countries, I have citizenship in both, etc. So I simply give my opinion based on my experience. Who else is better off to do that ? You don't see me on a Nigerian/UK thread because I've never lived in the UK. So again why are you even on this thread ? What do you know about Canada to be giving this individual advice ? Taking consolation in your children's future so soon odiegwu what of your own?

Your grand father's age mates are still running things here in Nigeria, do you have any hope in becoming Canadian president yourself? Please don't mention Obama, he is the only president of African decent ever to achieve such who else has done it(his mother was even a white American), I join you in hoping for the best for your kids.

Yes, they are running straight to a Swiss bank with the country's money. What our grand fathers age mates are doing is stealing money, and stashing millions of dollars in drawers or under ground. Nigerian politicians are nothing but thieves who have found a way to steal money legally. Ms Enemy of progress this individual works for a multinational company and is a CA making good money I'm sure. See your life? You can't do without name calling and insulting people which proves that you are an unhappy person despite your claim to living in paradise. If I didn't know about Canada and Nigeria I wouldn't be here. I'm also here to let the OP know the value of what he has here in Nigeria but it's not do or die like in your case.

FYI I'm also on threads on America, UK, infact most other threads like this and if I didn't know about some of these places I wouldn't be there too.

Since you love Canada so much why do you spend so much time in the travel section of nairaland(Nigeria land), shouldn't you be enjoying your country, doing other things besides spending 24hrs a day on a Nigerian forum, responding to every post written by Nigerians who love their country?

Once you land in Canada you begin to talk about securing your children's future, what of your own, abi life don end for you there?

Between, how many of those kids whose future has been secured there for decades now, ever become even a senator or any notable person of repute politically there in Canada, or is it today that people started securing their children's future there, why no notable person of political influence among them till date na?

This is the Nigerian mentality speaking.

You obviously haven't left the country.

Do you know that not everyone cares about or is interested in holding a political office?

Do you know that some people just want a normal life?

In short do you know that some people aren't interested in politics?

You incompetent patriot. Be gone already

Remember I am talking personal experience and experience of my close friends and colleagues here. I know more than 10 out of the 50ish that have completed the process and gotten the Pali and none of them have quit the job here to move to Canada. It makes absolute sense in several ways that I do not have the energy to spell out here

The senate president in Nigeria has dual citizenship, hope u know..if you had hope of becoming a senator in Naija why will you travel abroad.

But nobody will take your naija passport from you, you can still come back and hold political office, like Ngozi, Adeosun and all other technocrat ministers.

Even Gbenga Daniel came from abroad to be a Governor in Ogun state.

If nothing else, I trip for the accent of those yankee kids. They are also very outspoken and bold. Most naija PhD holders / bosses are usually intimidated by their accents. So if thats all my kids get there and return to Naija to run things (not necessary politics but in business), I am ok. shocked shocked

Lol you guys are not on ground we are the ones here

lets do this some family in nigeria survive on less than 50k everyone will agree with me on this

so this man decide to 50k every month because he wants to build a house in five years he would have saved 3million and if we go by my treasury bills investment or other bills he will definately save more than 3 milion

so he buys half plot of land at inside sango ota for 500k he his left with 2.5k he decides to build a straight 2 bedroom no desigh just straight pattern he will finish that house with that amount if you dont believe go to the property section on nairaland and see them argue and break it down how 2 million will build a straight 2 bedroom in nigeria

my people its very possible.

CANADA has harsh winters. Most jobs don't pay as high as US. The key with Canada is finding a good job. If you find a good job in Canada stay there, nigeria stay there. if in UK or germany stay there.

Ontario for the most part is a no go area in terms of good jobs unless maybe Ottawa - forget Toronto... too expensive.

Good, you are a Canadian and you love your country so what makes you feel you have bragging rights and I don't because I am a Nigerian?

What do you know about the things we enjoy here?

1) We pay very little tax here..

2) Our weather is never ever extreme, in fact we have so many months of good weather.

3) I can open multiple businesses and enjoy many months of tax exemptions

4) I can decide to start any legit business I chose with no questions asked by any authorities, all I need is to fill business opening forms and it is done

5) We actually own houses here without paying mortgage..

6) Land is easily bought here with flexible payment plans if one knows where to go

7) Whatever you do in your house e.g. borehole for water, installing solar panels, or using lister is all up to you

I can go on but I have got other things to do.

I am a Nigerian citizen and a very contented one at that, deal with it.

And this is why government later demolishes such structures 15 yrs later. No tax revenue for public services.

Every country has pros and cons.
