diordaves: Well-said! IMO, l think that apart from inept leadership (and greedy, selfish and short-sighted "followership", our two greatest problems stem from CORRUPTION and LACK OF PLANNING nay prioritisation. Like it is said, How can you WALK, if you cant CRAWL"? POWER (Electricity), followed by STEEL, is at the backbone of any Industrialisation and until we get those two right, in that order, we will just be having summit after summit, producing one white paper after another and speaking turainchi like a Professor! I've travelled far and wide, been to SA a few times and one common denominator in all "developing" or developed economies is STABLE POWER ....at least to about 20hrs of stable power, daily. Benin woodwork cannot survive or go beyond "local artisan' level, without power. Diasporeans will only be wasting their hard-earned money if they decide to "emotionally" in plug it into an economy that shows no sign of advancing in the immediate future, when their are tens of alternatives that can fulfil the same purpose. How can our Youths have 'par purchasing power', when they are not fully productive, to their full potentials? We are just too used to putting the Cart, before the Horse. 2 Likes 1 Share |

lorhema:How would you know if the water had issues that would take a long time to manifest symptoms. Water quality should be tested annually for individuals and quarterly for organisations. They test for minimum of the following: Total coliform bacteria Nitrate/Nitrites pH Total dissolved solids (TDS). Fluoride Organic Carbon Contaminants (Pesticides, Industrial Pollution etc.) In south-south it used to cost about 50k-150k and can be done by many laboratories including medical labs, petroleum analysis labs etc. Normally it preceeds borehole treatment but most folks just treat without testing. On your own you can actually readup on likely/general profile of the water in your area online or the nearby university library as there are a lot of project topics by geology students at bsc and msc levels about borehole quality and groundwater contamination DIY kits do exist for self testing but require basic knowledge. |

It is crazy and scary when your contractor starts adding up cost of windows and doors . Chest beats faster than as if one is being confronted by wild animal |

44chux:50-150k to test water quality? Why should its be individual or commercial entities business in the first place, it's should be government business to make sure sefe water get to the citizenry for consumption. All the water that go through pipes in my location is tested every 5 minutes, I repeat every 5 minute 24/7 throughout the years. |

@ hajji I disagree with your opinion in that regard, how many people can afford to test water quality @50-150k even if it's was once a year. Every government form 1976 till date as failed us as people. I hope things turns around for better Soon |

Some of those buglaries posted above really take away from the beauty of the windows and house in general. Unfortunately, this is the situation we find ourselves in if we build in Naija. Provide your own water, your own electricity, your own security, and so on...... mufutau55: |

Hello gurus, please I need you guys to advice me on what to do. I am about to fix burglary for the windows and doors for the main entrance of my ongoing building project, so that it will be secure. But my builder is saying that I have to fix the window frame, and he will dress the window before fixing the burglary. Now my problem with this are 1. I don't have enough cash on me to add window frame to the burglary and main entrance doors. 2. even if I have the money, can't the person that want to fix the window frame dress the window, because if I involve my builder in dressing the window, then I will have to pay him for just that work and then pay him again when he is doing the plastering. pls let your suggestions start rolling in |

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by mufutau55(m): 8:57pm On May 09, 2017 |
igwedehxy: Many people install burglary before windows to safe-guard their materials inside. Although it's good to make things easy for him. So not sure what your Builder is trying to proof, it's your money. Hajji M. |

mufutau55:don't know the size but this is the picture see if you can figure it out. My windows seem to be 33 total. According to the quote, it is exactly as the one you sent me cus I forwarded your sample to him plus it comes with net. It is my cousin handling my project and he has been doing good job bcus I took the job from so called contractor who did nothing but collected money. But since my cousin got his hands on it, the project went on faster than i can imagine. I know he would add his little stuff but I'm not bothered. But this quote is a little too heavy the way i see it. I'm not concluding to do it yet. Just want to hear your view. Really yours 37 that's almost 3m right there

mufutau55:you see when i told my cousin about descriptions of doors i want, I only suggested quality iron doors and gate for all main entrances. I said but all inside doors should be wood. He was like "hell no. everything iron all through" have to believe him unfortunately cus he lives there. He knows how nija looks like. Honestly i hate burglary stuff but seems we got no choice even if we fence the house. SAD |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by bixton(m): 9:24pm On May 09, 2017 |
igwedehxy:. I hope I understand your question before responding. Clients provide funds for their projects while the Architect/Engineer/Builder takes the best approach/suitable option towards achieving the desired result. A client can install the burglary first due availability of funds and later go for dressing of the windows. I want to assume you are yet to start the plastering of your structure and by so you ought to bargain with your builder on how much he will charge you to plaster the entire structure, dress doors, windows, and burglary. Then you can do it in phases and pay him accordingly as finally agreed. Or if you know the value of work to be achieved per day as against daily pay rate you can schedule it and bargain wisely. |

Kadiri07: Either way has their disadvantages. For me the, the tiles will crack and chip at some point. Once that happens you'll find the damage spreading, and it can be hard to fix without doing a major retiling of a section. Same is true of wood... once it starts to swell or crack from all that moisture, you need to replace something. All told, I think the wood is easier/cheaper to fix and look good. It's rare to see a fixed tile job look good after some years 2 Likes |

Empiree: No. The cost is around N1.6m with good negotiation and because he has been doing several other jobs for me in the past and some other NL friends introduced to him. Ok. You will pay a little bit more for Arc windows, I don't have any Arc window. Hajji M. |

Empiree: I wouldn't want any solid iron door for all the rooms. Some good chinese 70mm steel, nice wooden door like that of Skimanski or good Turkey wooden door will be sufficient. Good Naija wooden doors will ve good too but I hate it when some of them wobbles later. Hajji M. |
