This is not actually the way of football, it's the way of super rich football clubs who pay little or no attention to their own academies, it is the way of Chelsea.

Ajax won't bother about 15 year old Gilmour because they have an academy that has and can still produce much better prospects.

Barca's trust in La Masia makes it nearly difficult for you to see them chase a prodigy. Last week they announced the opening of an academy in Chicago, following the previous launch of schools in Austin, Texas, Florida etc. By the start of next season there will be 36 academies spread across five continents, including four in Canada, there are currently 27 in operation.

Spurs are even beginning to mind their business lately. Harry Kane, Tom Carroll, Josh Onomah and Harry Winks have all come up through the ranks while Danny Rose joined the Spurs academy from Leeds in 2006.

So I tell you, snapping up 15 year old Gilmour is the way of Chelsea, and it's an ugly trend.

For all Billy's talent, does he deserve to end up at Nottingham Forest or Vitesse?

We have 38 players out on loan across various divisions, with none of the three academy players who are in the first team a regular. What is the essence?

Nice analysis.

But unfortunately I completely disagree. Barca fans will tell you that the club policy has moved emphatically away from the la masia model. Who was the last La Masia graduate to break directly through to the first team?

Spurs have always had an academy that churned out players for sale - Livermore, Caulker, Ryan Mason, Tom Carroll and so on. Harry Winks, Josh Onomah etc don't really have a future at the club and will be sold - that's a betting statement.

Right now academies all over England are poaching up players that they know will never play for them. The only club in EPL that is really producing homegrown talent is Southampton. Almost every other club is engaging in this ugly practice...but because there's so much money in the game, the players and their parents go along with the ruse.

Have a look at this Article

https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2016/jan/21/academy-graduates-arsenal-illusion-flawed-system

Especially this excerpt

There are some obvious reasons why this is happening with renewed energy now. Clubs aren’t really expecting to build a team out of these players. In part the academy is a kind of due diligence exercise, a necessary sweep just in case that one-in-a-million player turns up. A single genius redeems the whole process, never mind these precious stones seem to turn up only as part of a more thorough process.

Second the academy can pay for itself by selling players, or via deals such as the one that took Afobe from Wolves to Bournemouth, from which Arsenal made £1.5m.

More to the point under the homegrown players rule eight of your 25-man squad must be homegrown (that is, grown somewhere in England). Hence the pressure to keep those age group teams churning on with their collection of possible sell-ons and helpful bench-warmers. Meanwhile the rest, the fill-ins who were always likely to be released anyway, become the football equivalent of net-bowlers, there to make up a practice team.

I am not sure I totally agree with this. Despite having a flurry of youngsters, Chelsea as a big club needs to continue to lure the best talent in the world.

Don't forget that there are two case scenarios being worked on here.

1. The often rare but feasible possibility of landing a serious gem. This is the best case scenario.
2. The case of long-term financial stability of the club - this is the worst case scenario for the player.

Case in Point, Patrick Bamford who was bought for £1.5m on low wages, had his wages paid by loan clubs throughout his "Chelsea Career" and got sold for £5.5m.

In the scheme of things long-term, it's often a win-win or the club.

the thing about academy like LA masia and Co.. they are period they produce some golden generation from the academy Eg Beckham set at Utd... Inesta set at barca.. the two clubs that have golden generation from the academy now is spurs and Madrid.. maybe Monaco.. it's important to note you need to have stability in coaching to use academy product in Chelsea coaches our simply don't last.. in Abramovic era no coach have lasted up to 4 seasons.. so coaches go for glory already made players instead of gambling with academy boy.. our loaning policy is generating revenue for us to meet FFP... once again it's Branzy.. happy to announce my presence here

Nna make una take am easy. Mbappe jungle never mature.

Someone who is yet to outscore Michy Batsuayi in a Ligue 1 season. Too much risk in such a transfer for now.

Mbappe played fewer matches than batshuayi in ligue 1. If you consider their goals/match ratio, batshuayi didnt do better than him. If madrid sells morata and buys mbappe then barca and other top clubs in europe are in trouble. It's like investing in a talented striker who will serve for more than 10 years, under a coach like zizou. He is going to score so many goals for madrid. Laliga is a very good place for him to blow up, not so many cutlass-holding defenders like in epl.

My man, as far as I am concerned, such transfer fee for 18 year old is a big risk for as yet unproven quality.

Mbappe is not showing anything Anelka didn't show at age 18. Is Anelka a top top bracket striker?

I haven't seen the interplay, touch, dribbling etc that makes him £80m player. What I'm seeing so far is extreme pace and hunger only for now. Not saying he's not good, but we need to see more. Nihilist could be right that he might just be a lucky Rashford for now.

I highlight that he has scored less Ligue 1 goals than Batsuayis last season for a reason - to bring balance to the argument. For example, Falcao has scored more goals in less games and Cavani has more than double his tally. If we take a more historical view, we will probably even find that Tammy Abraham has a much better youth career record.

In other words, £80m is what I expect to pay for the next Ronaldo Lima, and Mbappe is yet to show he is more than the next Anelka.

The plans thus far, according to reports:

1. Antonio Conte will be offered a lucrative £10million a year new contract keeping him in west London until 2022.

2. The Italian will be allowed to choose his own replacement for the departing Steve Holland. There are inferences that Andrea Pirlo could end up being the man he might bring in.

3. The board would provide the funds to land Conte's top targets who have been identified as; Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku and Virgil Van Dijk.

...............................

If these goes down as reportedly planned, I certainly see us doing a major double next season.

Watch this space!

The highlighted must be a joke. At 18, anelka was not even considered fully fit for ligue 1 matches, let alone killing big teams in europe. In fact it was when he reached 21 that he developed that heart for scoring goals. Even at that, it took him 35 matches to score 17 goals and scored 1 goal in 5 ucl matches. Anelka wasnt as good as iheanacho at 18. Mbappe's fee is too high but thats what the dearth of reliable goal-poachers in the game and madness in tf after pogba's deal caused. Will it stop? No. So in 5 years time, when we review and we may find out it's a smart and profitable venture considering the transfer market at that time.Meanwhile, Mbappe has a heart that every coach wants in a striker. Rashford is doing well but he is far from mbappe in the art of goal scoring. They are both growing, but will bet on mbappe to bring greater returns faster than rashford in a great team like madrid.

Anelka in his 19th year scored 19 goals and won PFA YPOTY and earned a £22m move to Madrid. In his 20th year, he scored the winner in the UCL final. He was bought for only £500k by Arsenal at 17/18.

At similar age, Anelka was where Mbappe is now, and I don't see the skill in Mbappes game that would make me price him at Ronaldo Lima level. You may claim his price could go up. Similarly, his price could go down and defenders could suss him out next year. There is nothing that makes an Mbappe with 2 years record under his belt much more than £80m so I wonder why the rush to pay such bucks now. Some players only have one good season you know. Quality is defined by ability to stay at high level over a long period. Rada Falcao a Chelsea and Manure flop has outscored him. How sure are you of putting such money behind him?

Anelka joined arsenal 1 month to his 18th birthday, with just 1 league goal and no european goal in his boots. That 500k was even too much for him. Taye taiwo was bought 100k by marseille in 2005. grin I dont know how anelka at 18 was of same quality with mbappe who has 14 league and 6 ucl goals now. Anelka at 19 in his first season at arsenal played 26 league matches and scored just 6 goals. They are worlds apart at 18 years bro. Everything in life is a risk, we bought an epl-tested torres for 50m and most of us are not satisfied with what he delivered. Shevy is also another flop, a ucl winner, best striker then. Most of us have forgotten kezman, belharouz, zhirkhov, cos they all flopped despite not showing anything close to what this youngie is showing before they were bought. Eduardo was bought by arsenal and got crippled. So Mbappe's will not be the first and the last risk. When barca was bombarding messi with artificial growth hormones, they had the foresight. Thats why i will even prefer he develops under a frenchman, zidane, who can communicate and nurture him well. Marcelo who replaced carlos 10 years ago, has grown to serve madrid like no other foreign defender did. Mbappe, under a good ex-footballer/coach will blossom.
