Spiceeamie Sorry mama. If u want to try d gyn u used to go to, its fine. Rhogham is given to prevent the 1% chance of blood mixing .that s y dy give it at 28 and 34wks now but in Nigeria i don't why they dont want to give it even when the patient is ready to take it. Its good that u had test done because some will not do test before telling you u will take rhogham after delivery. Just ask them if the test will be repeated and when? If its repeated around 32 or 34weeks. Do they evem want you to be sensitized before they give you rhogham ni or whats their stand on this? Since u r not sensitized yet. Then u shld take the rhogham to prevent any tiny possibility of mom and babys blood mixing. Dts what my oby/gyn doc told me in qatar. I took at 30weeks and 34weeks and day after i delivered because baby turned out to be B+. You can seek opinion of dt ur former doc to put ur mind at rest. Everything will turn out fine. U will birth all ur babies healthily and stressfree by Gods grace. |

Benignasweety: A fortune is nothing when you realise Nigeria has a very high maternal mortality rate. Count it all joy that most of the mothers here are coming back to give happy testimonials and don't assume it is the norm. And as for that N30, 000, please let us calculate the cost of your Baby's Naming Ceremony/Dedication. Let's see: Makeup/Gele N5, 000 Maybe you will sew new lace for you and your hubby: N12, 000 Photography: N10, 000 Gift for the church: N5, 000 Food, cake and drinks: etcetera Easily above N30, 000. But you will spend it more willingly. So which is important, a good hospital or a nice party? The choice is yours, ma. 4 Likes 1 Share |

katchycouture: Update cappo...Gender XX. I'm kind of caught between being really excited or just awaiting what it all entails. Never had a girl child and so it seems very different and my mind is telling me it may be more challenging. Most times I also ponder on 'how do I ensure her hair is made, ensuring she has female lesson teacher, how will she use the restroom when we are out in church, or other gatherings' ...the how's just keep coming. For those asking about LUTH, let me try and explain a bit, with insider gist (I can't remember your monikers sorry, everything is exhausting nowadays ) LUTH and most General Hospitals have 2 problems: 1. Corruption and Poor Management: The CMDs have chopped, heads of departments have chopped, almost everyone has a idea gig going on. So the monies govt have poured into that place for decades, has been used to fund their lifestyles. They lack a lot of functioning equipment and even when they do get new equipment, no-one to train them how to use it. Once, a multinational coy wanted to make a donation of incubators, the heads said they would collect 5 for their personal clinics, the company said no and LUTH 'suddenly" decided that they will only allow the company fund the purchase and not donate the machines (you must play ball or walk away). They are constantly having strike issues and JOHESU staff is the one in charge of their supplies (so you can go there and there are Dr's on ground but the guy/nurse with the key to the Oxygen cabinet is no-where in sight). LUTH is also notorious for having very lax medical students (compared to UBTH and UCH, where the medical students are so frustrated that they tend to have quite a few hushed-up suicides). My siblings taught my classmates and said years ago, LUTH should have lost its accreditation to train surgeons and that half of my classmates were so unserious and never wanted to study (all my classmates disliked them enormously and only one was honest enough to admit my relatives were right). Their students are now your doctors. Healthcare is not cheap in any part of the world (come to the US pregnant as a citizen. You will appreciate being able to find N30, 000 antenatal in Nigeria. Even with insurance). Our medical staff are so underpaid that I will help process visa for any Doctor graduating. With all these internal wahala, it can be a bad place... However, you cannot become a consultant unless you pass through a Teaching Hospital so in LUTH you get some of the best doctors in Nigeria. Unfortunately in Nigeria, even though we do NOT have enough doctors, getting a Residency posting is like trying to get a job in FIRS and NIMASA. And any sane doctor who wishes to progress is fleeing Nigeria. 2. All hospitals in Nigeria have a Nigerian Patient Factor. Whereby Nigerian patients do NOT PRIORITIZE THEIR OWN HEALTH AND EXPECT TO BE RUSHED AT THE LAST MINUTE TO LUTH/TEACHING HOSPITAL AND A MIRACLE WILL OCCUR. A man had a mild heart attack declared he was fine, his family took him to their dr, then to RCCG for prayers and he went home. A week later, he had the big one. First, there are no ambulances and people don't know First Aid, so they were shrieking prayers over him and pouring cold water on him. 40 mins later, he got to the hospital. And were transferring their grief onto my sibling and telling him he was a bad doctor for not saving their father's life. If you know the hot, angry words my sibling gave them... I have seen one of my siblings get beat up by some animals because they were told to go to blood bank and get Rhesus-negative blood and the blood bank didn't have, he couldn't do a transfusion and the relatives said he was being negligent (biko what is he to do, turn water into blood/wine??) I have heard of some crazy pregnant lady's husband who was told this same issue with blood donation and took it up by grabbing the collar of another sibling and shake him up. Unfortunately for that man, that other sibling is a crazy mo'fvcker and that woman recovered with her newborn and saw her husband, humbled and contrite, with a black eye. One of our family friends had a sign in his office: "my name is...., not Jesus. LUTH is a hospital, not a mortuary. Stop bringing your dead bodies here and expecting a miracle". And oh, patients sneaking away without paying bills... How many of us know our entire medical history, how many of us know our Blood group, that of our husbands and children? How many of us come to Nairaland to ask about medications and treatment and how many of us know that children are susceptible to Cerebral Malaria, worse than regular malaria and it is best treated by a Dr and not the pharmacist they went to? How do you now expect the medical staff at teaching hospitals and Govt hospitals to perform miracles when you didn't even do the little you could do... Please, mothers, do your part. Don't go to hospital without your brains (I am told this constantly by my siblings). Know your medical vitals and records. I have informed Consultant OB-GYN in Nigeria and in the US that I need a Rhogam shot, I didn't wait for them to find out themselves. You only have one life, please, please make it easy to save your own life. Do your part, let God meet you more than halfway. Please. The end. Oya, let me run away again PS: be nice to your labor room nurses. They are the ones who will spend the most time with you, in labor. Afterwards, feel free to send a bowl of rice and chicken to them as thanks. Or even N500 recharge card for like, 3 nurses. It will surprise you how much nicer they will be. Don't give money, give a small gift. Even to private nurses. Even outside Nigeria, they encourage you to do so. 18 Likes 2 Shares |

Elixir123: It's annoying how one cannot get a posting but yet Nigeria has a shortage of doctors... He should go there, he will meet a lot of great doctors and if he's smart, he will learn all the tricks and shortcuts they know (my siblings ran and became talented and Professors outside Nigeria and can come back like awon big boys and girls and nobody will misyarn to them). And truly, nothing like a Public health trained Naija Dr (that's why they become superstars abroad). 2 Likes |

Benignasweety: Then plan well. Do you have enough for blood bank? Expensive hospital doesn't mean shi-shi, good doctors matter. And biko ask those questions, even at GH. ISLAND maternity can handle neonatal issues. I can tell you GH is not very clean, they may not have enough incubators, your husband will have to donate blood (and if you are like me, with a rare blood group please locate a donor who doesn't smoke, and beg the person to be close to their phone for the next 4 weeks). Me, I have realized to plan is to succeed. You only need 3 scans unless you are high risk. Please have your hospital bag packed. Brb 3 Likes |

Onegai, this is d sour practice in most, if not all of our govt hospitals today. From my personal experience in UBTH, I'll put 60% blame on d government, 38% on the hospital management /CMDs & 2% on the poor doctors & nurses made to work in horrible conditions! I guess d state of staff/patient corruption is not as bad as LUTH,as I haven't witnessed any greasing of palms here , but if u interact with d staffs, you'll pity them. How would nurses function adequately when they are just 3 of them on night duty in a maternity ward that has 42 beds or a single doctor(mostly house officer o!) to be on call during weekends and fed once daily? The CMD ,who was once a young doctor and should understand better, makes life worse for them. Imagine the UBTH cmd taking nurses to industrial court, bcoz they demanded their dues and threatened to go on strike. Sometimes these doctors are nothing short of miracle workers, considering what's available to them, they really out do themselves, if they want to. ... On the patient aspect, would attribute most of it to ignorance, then poverty. How would u explain a woman, who registerd for antenatal with 30k, but instead chose to go to a chemist when she didn't feel fetal kicks for a whole day, the chemist guy used stethoscope to check and told her all was well, it was when she didn't feel it d next day she decided to go to d hospital, then it was too late! Or is it the one dat was rushed in from another hospital to UBTH bleeding, with a baby stuck in her arguing with doctors that she doesn't want cs ooo! She can deliver vaginally, they knocked her out and performed the surgery only to bring out an almost 8kg baby and her uterus had ruptured. This same woman was still refusing medication afterwards cos of hospital bill. If only our people were better informed, if only healthcare was more affordable, we would make the right choices! 13 Likes |
