I'm awed reading through these comments. First of all there's a different between ass licking and being an extrovert, you guys should stop equating them. Being an introvert is not and shouldn't be a problem for anyone in the workplace or interview. You go to office to work and not to make noise and friends. It's all about being smart and dedication to your job. I have introverts as friends and they do super well in what they do. Please let's stop equating dullness to introvert, being an introvert doesn't mean you can't stand up for yourself, doesn't mean you can't be smart or you can't do well at interview. Who even wants a talkative in an office environment, bosses prefers people that get work done. There's a huge different between asslicking and extrovert, also betweenbeing smart and introvert! 9 Likes |

dupsyluzy: It wasn't really about you but about your Boss. She is not experienced and couldn't draw a distinction between home, family, friendship and work. It is completely unprofessional to offer or accept to either carry another colleague's bag or carry it at all. You are all colleagues. I don't have to greet you and you owe me no greetings, just do your job. I don't get to see my staff except I want them to explain somethings personally and they don't have to see me except they so choose. Just get the godamn job done and give me results. We recently ran an MBTI assessment in my office and of all members of Executive Management, including two Executive Directors (one the Group MD), only 2 members were extroverts and guess what, we still run the Management of the Company. (A large Group with 4 subsidiaries). My point? If you are an introvert, it's not a negative, the system should be able to draw strength from the diversity. Introverts are generally calmer, more organized, tend to notice the missing letters and often others that have been overlooked which could actually cost the company a whole lot. Introverts come in best at the back end while the extroverts are pushed to the frontline (marketing and business development). We all have our uses. 6 Likes |

Happen to be a senior engineer with a multi-national for 11years and can tell you that it causes set-backs. I have the ability to get scope at 98% due to my years of service and one of the best if not the best in the dept. But trust me, it has severely affected my promotion an versatility. I can't connect to get informations or seek to get get redeployed to another country or continent cos am more of a ghost. It also makes u have enemies cos colleagues just dont know what's running in your mind and majority see it has pride. Trust me, I utter less than 200 words a day at work but always try all my best never to step on toes which can only be caused by a bad job. 5 Likes |

Favourite01: I would say I share some attributes of this to some extent. I was always mixing up what I want to say, not that I didn't know what to say but saying them in the right order. The trick I used is thinking and talking a little slowly. As for getting a job, you would but keeping it and growing in it should be a worry. As for office politics, I still don't know how to play it as It entails a lot of gossiping, flattery and eye service, things I still can't bring myself to do, Making it difficult Climbing the corporate ladder. 3 Likes |

Used to be an introvert and am still one. Working with a boss, i figured out they like the bad more than the good. "The notice me guys" win it in the office space. I figured out how to control it, y'all should try it, spot what you're good at and whenever a topic is raised in that aspect, shine the light in it. With that am sometimes a talkative. Also i used what i had to control my shyness, like the cute looks, realized how shy i was and used that aspect to win likes from ladies. I remember when i starred working in an office and one experienced staff told someone who then told me that "he said this guy is always too serious, we're not like that here ooh" . Then met one of my graphic tutor who narrated how he used to be that bone face typa guy but had to imbibe amusing look to kill it off. 1 Like |

Benekruku: I have had a different perspective. My promotion was the fastest at my level in the history of the company which is more than 50 years old. I am a certified Introvert based on a recent professional analysis. At the end of my second year at the job, I went to my ED, sat him down and asked him to assess me in the past two years ( i report to the MD and the Board, but that ED is more powerful than the MD), he said he felt I was delivering on all spheres, I then asked why I had not been recommended for promotion. I told him also I will not resign even if I am not promoted, but I like to know that I am being appreciated. It was a threat but I also covered my back. The next Committee meeting, I was recommended and the Board approved it. My point? Know you environment and use the knowledge to your advantage. 4 Likes 1 Share |

dupsyluzy: As in introvert myself I've been a victim of being misunderstood. People don't understand the mindset of an introvert. We enjoy being alone, sometimes talking irritates us, we pay attention to detail and sometimes people see it as being too serious and sensitive. It's just our nature...we are friendly and nice if ONLY PEOPLE TAKE THE TIME TO UNDERSTAND US AND GIVE US TIME TO OPEN UP. 5 Likes |

I used to be an introvert. During university days, i hardly make any friends and was only friends with a friend from the neighbourhood who we happens to be in the same school and dept. i stutters when people walk up to me and start a conversation and they end up leaving in frustration. the only reason i am known in class was because i was among their top 6 else i will have been invisible with no one knowing who i was. After nysc, i got a job at a law firm but my boss was just like your boss, she used to shout at any opportunity that i ll become speechless and will not know what to say while my other colleague donot have such problem. the thing is i know the problem, i know i am an introvert and after i lose the job, i plan to break the introvert in me. whenever i go out i will strike up a conversation even though i dont know how to keep it going but i will still do it, sometimes i will say nonsense. i keep going and it started getting better and better. i started looking people in the eye. losing the job was a blessing because i got a bank job four months after, by then i was already training mysef to speak out. it wasnt easy at first since being an introvert means you always watch what you say and make sure its the right thing but i break out of it. now i am one of the talkative people in my dept. All in all is that i understand your plight, i have been there and whoever says this is not associated with how you are brought up was saying bullshit. if i cant break out it, you can too because believe me, being an introvert in a professional world will mostly put you at a disadvantage especially if you are not your own boss 5 Likes |

dupsyluzy: It isn't exactly a bad thing that you had to stop working at this place. I am aware most people in Nigeria would do any job at all cost due to the massive unemployment figures there. However, you have to come to terms with the fact that the employers try to pick a best fit for their organisation, for example: a company in a hugely extroverted field(or industry) would require extrovert employees and vice versa. Everyone is Unique, most especially as an introvert, you would have a heightened awareness of this fact and generate strength from it. Extroverts on the other hand, would try to blend in with other extroverts to appear stronger. If such is the case, then potential employees, irrespective of their characteristic disposition, should as well endeavour to pick the best organisations to work with/for that suit their personalities. In other words, If you don't find an organisation culture to be in line with your ideals or professional conduct, you shouldn't work there in the first place. Your skills are yours to keep and should only be deployed to a project you deem deserving of your contribution, and that would benefit from same. In civilized society, organisation culture is usually dictated by the industry. Therefore young people would usually be advised to pursue specific career routes where their personalities would be most relevant. For most introverts, specific fields stand out, most of which would be creativity or proprietary related, this is due mostly to the complexity of their thought process. I wish I could tell you more but this whole page would not be enough. 2 Likes |

Well... introverts tend to be employers they have the brains and can forcast intelligently, they see the odds where the extroverts dont. I retired at 29 and told myself the last job was the last.. As an introvert, people think you are shy or proud and cant have relationship with others. But it really is not. I dont want to hear abt the girl u slept with last night (70% of guys centre on such discuss) I dont want to talk football (ronaldo does not knowni exist) I dont want to hang out and spend more than my monthly (someone owns the clubs and rakes in) I want to sit and gist on same level with likeminds (business oppurtunities, avenues to make wealth etc) I dont want friends i cant ask for help because i know they dont have it due to reckless life but are quick to run to you because they know you always plan. Seriously being an introvert has more advantages than dis-advantages.. They dont do well in marketing and sales but when they are in their zone, they excel, excellent thinkers and brilliant improvisors/innovators. 14 Likes 1 Share |

projet: exactly! I'm an introvert. and I totally understand what others are going through as stated on the thread. It's really not easy getting a job and being in a work environment. Even living with extroverts is stress. Sometimes when people say opposites attract, it's a lie. cos I can't imagine dating or marrying an extrovert. 5 Likes |

I'm an introvert and I relate to the post and most comments. Still, I've managed to get two very good jobs, purely by merit. I consider myself very fortunate. I've always hated interviews and still do (especially as I have a stutter), but I've done enough of them that I no longer fear them. The key is to practice repeatedly, and always remain calm. Modern society is now controlled by extroverts. The Sanguins and Cholerics. As an introvert, it's important to learn how to network and socialize, or at least PRETEND (which is what I did/do). But it's still hard. Even in my job, the pressure to be outgoing and network and socialize and 'kiss-ass' is still strong, and can be overwhelming. |

Life seems difficult as an introvert. I do understand people very well and people fail to understand me. An introvert with a small girl status who is also unmarried is kinda hard a little. Where I work as a secondary School teacher, one of the staffs there do talk rudely to me. The whole school seems to be against me because I don't "mix" with them nor do chat with them the way my fellow Corp members do. They call me the proud one. 2 Likes |

Greatidonis:I thought I was the only one that experience this at work. Many a times, I prefer to be left alone for good than being with people that are really arguing and shouting over a discussion that brings absolutely nothing positive. One of the thought times for me at work was during BBN, you needed to see how colleagues were so much into it as if they were the organizers, or they would get a share in the proceedings. Many a times, a soft music (or better still silence), is much more appreciated than a baseless and non-profiting conversation 4 Likes |
