LAGOS— The Federal Government has waded into the uproar emanating from confusion over the requirement for meningitis immunisation, as recommended by the Directorate of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

A meeting of the Federal Ministry of Health, FMOH; Nigeria Centre for Diseases Control, NCDC; National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, NPHCDA and NYSC has been called for tomorrow and Wednesday, even as the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has assured that the Federal Government would be responsible for immunising all corps members sent to meningitis-prone areas.

With this development, thousands of the 2017 Batch A prospective corps members currently facing harrowing time obtaining meningitis immunisation at government and private health institutions may soon heave a sigh of relief.

Disclosing this to Vanguard, in a telephone chat, Technical Assistant, Communication, NCDC, Dr Lawal Bakare, said the meeting would provide common ground for resolution of the issues at stake.

He said: “A meeting has been called between the NCDC, FMOH, and NPHCDA and the NYSC on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The NYSC cannot unilaterally do anything on vaccines; even the NCDC cannot make pronouncements on vaccines because we are not custodians of vaccines. That is the duty of the NPHCDA.”

Last week, the NYSC Directorate, on its Portal, stated that in addition to mandatory medical examinations carried out at government hospitals including Military hospitals, Prospective Corps Members “are encouraged as a matter of priority to be immunised against cerebrospinal meningitis before reporting to camp”.

*But in desperate search for the elusive meningitis vaccine, intending Corps Members have been at the mercy of sharp practices and perpetrators of illegal sale of Meningitis C vaccines*.

Investigations reveal that a dose of the meningitis vaccine available at some private hospitals in Lagos goes for minimum of N9, 000 while claims of payments as high as N15, 000 were also encountered.

Bakare, who noted that although the directive was probably only a recommendation which is part of prevention generally, however said any unilaterally talk about vaccines would make it become a case of heightened demand and the country does not have sufficient doses.

“If you recall the old National Programme of Immunisation, NPI, has been moved into the NHPCDA as custodians of vaccines in Nigeria. It was moved several years back and that is why anything on immunisation in Nigeria is under the NHPCDA, so nobody else has authority to manage these things.

“We are going to meet with them on Wednesday and will issue a joint statement just to make sure we are on the same page.

If they want the immunisation to be done at the NYSC camp, that can be arranged, so those as the Corpers come in, the vaccines would be administered to them.

Hmm!! You just reminded me something now, It's good to be a platoon leader or even platoon fin secretary but please try as much as possible to be a good leader, dont be like my own platoon leader or fin secretary,(let me not call there names) that decided to pocket our money in dia own pocket,ite not good,it will never speak good of you,we paid 1k each, but we didn't see what we paid for,our dance and drama cloth, dem no hire and our cultural cloth nko,you need to see what we wore,
Close to 200 and something thousand gone!!! So my dear try and be a good platoon leader when you get to camp,and to the fin secretary also, don't chop people's money!!

Well, a lot of merits.. Little demerits, normal issh of being a leader.. just make sure you have the support of your platoon officer.. That's all, nd try to placate all the big boys in the platoon who might not want you..

Merits.. Good PPA by your platoon officer, probably in the capital.. Popularity stuff, make friends and meet people. Money too.. And so on as you can exploit

Okay. Have you tried sending them a mail message? If not, try to. Make the subject of your mail. URGENT: Non-Evaluation of Documents.
Seems it was omitted, they might thought they've checked it.
Or your institution is not accredited with them so they don't recognise your documents.

Best thing to do, is to visit Abuja 2 the National Directorate Headquarters and lay your complaints.. That should solve it once and for all.

WHATS NEXT AFTER NYSC CAMPING?​


Step 1: ​Report to your Place of Primary Assignment(PPA).​
The first thing to do immediately after leaving orientation camp is to report at your place of primary assignment. If peradventure, your PPA is far from your orientation camp, go to the community for the night and settle down and the following morning, go to your PPA.
What you will be taking to your PPA is the posting letter that was given to you on camp after the passing out parade (camp POP) on the last day of the camp.

The essence of taking your letter to your PPA is to determine whether they will accept or reject you. The posting letter is a letter addressed to your employer, and a detachable form is underneath.
Advise: make a photocopy of your posting letter before submitting.
At your PPA, the person in charge of corps member will either accept or reject you.

In the detachable form, the PPA will either write YES or NO and stamp it.
For example, if your PPA is a school, the principal of the school will stamp the detachable part of the form and write YES/NO in the acceptance Column.
If he write YES, that means you can continue your steps further, but if he rejects you, read on how to take a new posting letter when you are rejected

Step 2: ​Submit your letter of acceptance to your Zonal Office or Local Inspector office as the case maybe:​ once you are accepted in your Place of Primary Assignment (PPA), the form will be detached and you will be given the end part of the form and your PPA will keep the other part, you take the part given to you to the Zonal Office and submit.  Depending on how far your PPA is to the Zonal Office, if it is very far, a local inspector will be attached to your area who will collect the form from you and record it in a register as you bring your slip.

Step 3: ​Open a Bank Account.​
Immediately you bring your acceptance letter and you fill the register, the Local Inspector / the person attending to you at the Zonal Office assign you to a bank. Go to the bank immediately with 3 passport photograph and your NYSC ID Card lest I forget. For the next 1 year, you must always carry your ID card along anywhere you are going to. Your ID card will open doors for you (depending on how you utilize it)

Step 4: ​Go back to the Zonal office/LI’s office to fill in your bank details.​
Do you know why I’ve been patiently listing all this into steps, its because so many corps members are eager to travel back home, so they will just open the bank account and travel home, and will now come back to complain they have not been paid. The reason is because they did not fill the account register before they travel.

So‎ once you are through with your account opening, you will be issued a bank account number, endeavor to take this account number back to the Zonal Office and fill in the account register book. In the account register book, you fill in your account number, bank and your signature. Your signature must be the same as the specimen you gave while on camp.

Step 5: ​Enjoy your 2 weeks leave (depending on you PPA).​ Once you have finished steps 1-4 and you are sure, you can now travel, go for a training, read book for the next two weeks depending on your PPA.  If your PPA is a school, most times they are either already on holiday period or about to start. So enjoy the holiday with them. But if your PPA is a private firm, ministry and other parastatals, your leave will be dictated by them, so please adhere to it.
