English isn't our first Language. We're all learners. If she's open to learning, then her case has solution.

There is this very nice and homely girlfriend of my cousin, she is really short and endowed naturally, but my cousin keeps complaining on the fact that she don't speak good English and can't even compose a sentence. Sometimes he does asks me how can someone graduate from Lasu with such poor expression skills like how did she writes her exams and tests. She literally can't read nor knows when to use past tense and even using he for female and she for male. He found those attributes embarrassing as a masters degree holder (LOL)

My usual Advise to him:

I do hang out with them sometimes when I'm around and I can confirm his worries, but I also notice she is very homely, hardworking (catering and owns a shop where she sells cloth), I can't deny the fact that she cooks good too, but what else does he want from the lady?. All the so called slay mamas out there can't even cook good or stay independent financially. No matter how I try to convince him, he would agree with me and later still complains about her disturbing use of English like he cant get over it. I just got off the phone with him now and I thought I would put this out there (I'm actually bored and would like to read comments) maybe I can get more reasons to encourage him.

Life na WA o. English can be taught, he should enroll her in an English class or find a house teacher to teach her figures of speech till she knows how to use English to a certain level that won't cause embarrassment.

If she can't speak it, what about pigin and her native tongue? Did English originated from Nigeria?

I suggested that idea to him which he actually did, even bought her some novels and a smart phone to be surfing Nairaland and other social platforms, but he said the interest isn't even in her as all books are just dumped in one side of the wardrobe

If he loves her, he should continue to date her. Learning English is not quantum physics. If his is good, chances are, she'll pick up a word here & there over time, thus improving her understanding of it. From observation, people who spend a lot of time together tend to mirror each other. I remember some time ago, someone mentioned that me & a friend of mine have the same laugh. LOL! I've never paid attention to that before but apparently we copied each other, unintentionally. After what the lady said, I started noticing it in different people eg. couples. Most couples share the same vocabulary/expressions, that's why you can tell easily when someone's been hanging around a new crowd or person...they start to speak differently or use "unfamiliar" words.

My couz does relates with her in English and when the conversation is getting longer, she responds in Yoruba even I do try that whenever I'm around them and she would respond in Yoruba so I'll have to blend with her as a shy guy that I am. This one pass me. My couz is a nairalander I hope he doesn't find out about this Lol. He'll kill me.

It's not domestic violence if you expect a miracle to happen Well, I think he should cut her some slack. It's embarrassing, I can imagine, however, it doesn't change that the reasons are shallow & he is being one of Hitler's generals- a grammar Nazi.12 months is a long to be with someone to suddenly realize you don't like how they speak. A girl I know of, once faced this challenge, she even opened up to me that the moment she stopped watching Africa Magic Yoruba and those Yoruba movies, she improved drastically, whenever she watches American movies or nollywood, she is more interested in listening to sentences, instead of what the movie is about. Though she makes little mistakes, but since I wouldn't listen to her in her dialect unless she speaks English, she improved and gained confidence in speaking well, right now Dictionary is the main app on her phone after the other social ones.

If this girl is homely as you said, your cousin should just explain why she should be able to express herself well in English, as well as her dialect. We always can't have it all like oliver twist o

Her certificate language is in English, her country's official language is English, her phone's settings is in English, so bro don't mind those telling you who English help.

I wouldnt encourage nairaland, though there are some writers with a good grasp of english and its use, the majority of english i see there can only b described as a total cacophonic mockery of english babble babble. I can only say oh my God. What narsciferous tapiloquy- Mr. Obahiagbon
