The Chief of Defence Staff control the 3 members of the armed forces which are the Army,Navy & Air force because their heads report to him & it is his constitutional duty to oversee all of them & give direction where necessary but the Chief of Army Staff only control the Army.

Ironically that is not the case in Nigeria. Whenever a northerner is not the COAS. , the president the COAS is relegated. Shameful country.

2, The COAS and CDS do not command troops, the GOCs and Brigade commanders do.
3, The relationships between the CDS or COAS to the troops depends what loyalties they get directly from the troop commanders!
4, The CDS is a FULL 4 star general while the COAS is a 3 star Lt General. The CDS is by far superior and he can contact the Troop commanders directly if he feels the COAS is compromised! The CDS is the top military uniformed commander in the armed forces. The minister of defence and Minister of state for defence only have political and administrative oversight, although they can issue presidential orders to the CDS and COAS!

you re just dancing round the question ,cds is superior to coas shikenna .the likes of abacha,abdusalami were once CDs before they become head of state, I don't know any of coas becoming head of state

Gen Yakubu Gowon was COAS when he plotted coup.

Gen Aguiyi Ironsi was COAS before he took charge

Gen Ibrahim Babangida was COAS before he took charge.

Gen Sani Abacha had his influence as COAS, the CDS "upgrade" was actually to phase him out but he changed it.

Gen TY Danjuma made his influence as COAS to Murtala Muhammed.

As for ex CDS Abdulsallam Abubakar, he was APPOINTED C-in-C by SMC and he didn't plot coup after d death of Abacha.

Let me state that only 2 ex CDS have assumed C-in-C but Abacha should be an exception because his powers started as COAS.

In fact, even some GOC's are more powerful than CDS eg Muhammad Buhari and Murtala Muhammed.

The CDS has no OPERATIONAL control over a single unit except joint operations, which is even rare.

The COAS can only be disciplined by the C-in-C not the CDS.

Haba, the army is one of the components of the military just as the navy and airforce is. The Chief of Defence staff is the head of all the components of the military making up as defense.

The Defense Chief is in charge of budgetary allocation to the Chief of Army, Air, Naval.

No military formation from any Service deploys without first briefing and getting approval from Defense Chief.

Service Chiefs own operations and missions but Defense Chief is accountable, wheter good or bad.

Defense Chief is sitting at the top of the heirarchy and all military infrastructures and assets of a country are under his management.

Defense Chief work on political, diplomatic, legal, cultural, mercantile and military interests and his office is supported by staffs specialized to give advisory in these fields of international engagement.

You nailed it. CDS is more superior. And if the COAS wants to play power game, the CDS will simply allocate more budget to the Navy and Airforce than the Army.

Remember money controls everything. So the CDS can weaken COAS by reducing his budget.

The chief of Defence is higher than chief of Army. The COD overseas the 3 arms collectively (Army, Navy and Airforce) while the COA overseas just the Army. The COA reports to the COD. If you can remember late General Azazi was the former chief of army staff before he was promoted to the position of COD

In addition to what you rightly pointed out, the Service chiefs - Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Air Staff and Chief of Naval Staff are technically staff of the Defence Department representing their various services.

The Chief of Defence Staff is their head of department - they report to him first in case of any issue though they all form part of a larger body that reports directly to the President who is commander in chief of the Armed Forces.

An irony however is that the Chief of Army Staff is more powerful when compared to the Chief of Defence Staff because the COAS has direct control of the ranks and files in the Army and so can easily setup or diffuse a coup attempt. If successful, the COAS heads the government and force the Chief of Defence Staff to resign.

If the head of government is a militrary man and has to step down, the onus is on the Chief of Defence Staff to coordinate a smooth take over in agrement with other arms of the Armed Forces through the service chiefs.

-The composition of the armed forces is already a joint operation so yes the CDS has oversight over troop commanders but will rarely do it so as not to usurp the role of the COAS. It is just a traditional thing!
The CDS can go to Sambisa forest and ask for update on operations from the task force commander if he chooses to do so! He will rather send the COAS or GOC or Brigade commander - through their direct reporting commanders

-The COAS can receive memos and reprimands from the CDS on matters relating to discipline, operations and administration if he chooses... so yes, Again he will rarely do it!

The CDS and Defence minister can reprimand the COAS in many ways relating to operations, budget, administration and morale!

Administratively, the CDS oversee the activities of the COAS, CAS and CNS. But operationally, the CDS is "just there" while the COAS controls the ground troops and the entire Army.

However, CDS only take charge during "joint" operations, which is rare.
Also, though the CDS has Administrative supervision over the COAS, he CANNOT tell the COAS what to do at any given time. Only the C-in-C enjoy such power. All Service Chiefs brief the C-in-C irrespective of their title.

The COAS by virtue of the control he has, is more powerful and influential within the army than the CDS. The COAS is more dangerous too.

Hence, a C-in-C could make anybody CDS but the COAS is usually a TRUSTED general.

No foolish Chief of Army Staff will near Mr President or Minister of Defence or NSA etc for any type of briefing without first calling Chief of Defence Staff, except he wants to terminate his career..... angry

Power is synonymous with territorial or followership and coverage of influence.

Superiority is synonymous with class, rank, heirarchy.


But the chief of defense staff reports to the minister of defense and the minister of state for defense.

The chief of defence staff is more powerful by virtue of the fact that his rank is superior and his position is professional and not political.

The chief of army staff, naval staff and air staff all report to him.

By the way he is a full fledged General (4 star general) while chief of army staff is only a 3 star general.
