Guy, I like the way you shifted the focus of this thread. I know Kwameh was a good fella, probably the only popular west african independence figure. Its funny because I have never heard of any nigerian liberation heros... These countries who were handed freedom on a silver platter tend to go haywire somewhere along the way.

Not to be biased but I prefer nations that FOUGHT for independence not those who got it by peaceful means. It says alot about that country.

Now to the meat of the matter, Nyerere was just an awesome leader politically, not economically. He created a homogenous country with no divisions on a tribal basis and has stuck since. His economic policies however were those of a very naive person. I dont know much about his academic credentials but his policies could only have been from those of a philosopher, not an economist. Tanzania was the laughing stock of the region by the time he left office.

Mr. Idi Amin was just a terrible swahili speaking dictator with a very very low IQ. He is only popular among radicals, the same sorts you'd see supporting Mobutu Sseseko. He had ambitions of grabbing about half of Kenya and Tanzania because he had a few fighter jets he thought made him invincible. Man of little knowledge. Tanzania kicked his @ss outta Uganda.

Jomo Kenyatta was just a charismatic capitalist. Fulstop. Not the kind of guy you'd talk to about social welfare. His philosophy was every man must work for himself or die !!! He was very economically smart though and he foresaw a country that was easily the weakest in E.A grow to become the strongest to this date. In my opinion, most of Kenya's advances can be traced directly to him. He had great foresight. Which is why as soon as Kenya got independence and white people were leaving in droves with fear of this Mau Mau tyrant, he called a meeting and assured them that those who would remain would not face any form of revenge or discrimination. He also made sure Kenya got the UN HQ by providing all the land and other facilities such a huge organ would require. Not many leaders in Africa at that time would have done that.

On the other hand, the man was strict and not tolerant of criticism and mostly disavowed leaders who had communist ideologies. He is even accused of having murdered a few. Not to mention that the traces of tribal politics can be traced to him. As one guy pointed out, he was at one time called to order over government policies that seemed to favor his own kikuyu peoples in a parliament session and his reply was simple and candid : My people get milk in the morning, your people in the afternoon. He sowed much tribal hatred in kenya.

Yes, they are related. Agaw, Afar, Oromo, Somalia and most other Horn of Africans are Cushites. Even the likes of Amhara, Tigray, Gurage, Harar and others who speak Semitic family language are more Cushites than Semites. On average Amharas and Tigrays are 60-70% Cushite and 30-40% Semite.

Tana river is mostly unadjudicated land so it makes it abit complicated. The Ormas claim parts of it (its right next to Garissa) while the Pokomo claim parts. These claims overlap each other at times, especially during famine, when Ormas take their cattle and feed them on Pokomo farms (there was no such incidence this time, surprisingly,)

They come as far as the River Tana which cuts through the county.

In Eastern, they start at Isiolo. Also alot of incidences there with the neighbouring Meru farmers who also happen to keep livestock in addition to farming. Many times their are raided for their cattle, besides then occasional feeding of livestock on their farms.

Potiskum has d largest cattle market in west Africa nd second largest in Africa I tink. It's also a commercial city and has an isolated airport built in 1945 during d colonial era, I quite sure, many people from potiskum r oblivion of it. Nah Nigerians don't think Bantu is derogatory. In fact, Bantu culture is celebrated in naija like Bantu knots/beauty trends among our ladies and Bantu lingo like Hakuna matata. Nigeria usually looks to Cameroon since they are our closest Bantu neighbors. People from Naija have no grudges with Cameroonians at all, we are close friends. However it's your neighbors, Somalis(not all, but some) who have grudges with Bantu and West Africans for some apparent reasons. How do I know? We've had a few Somalis in the past who have come on NL to bash Nigerians about how they are superior Cushitic race or whatever and we are Bantu negro or something. Most Nigerians aren't familiar with Somalis except on the TV. At first impression, instead of showing us the positive side of their culture/country, they came on NL to bash. Most Naija just ignore them or try to tell them that there is no race called Bantu, it's just a cultural/linguistic term. But no, they keep insisting that Bantus are a race and "ugly." One even try to suggest that West African groups like Fulani are less Bantu because they haven't be mixed. PS: Cameroon, at least politically is considered C. Africa, but they are the closest C. African country to West Africa and we share some ethnic groups. I think Cameroon culturally is both in West and Central Africa.

The Bantus in Cameroon are a minority and just about 1/5 of the population.

Most Cameroonians are culturally related to the Adamawa/Taraba/Cross river and Benue people of Nigeria. Infact about a dozen ethnic groups cross the Nigerian boundary into Cameroon, speaking the same languages and the same culture.

Cameroonians are 70% related to the Eastern extremes of Nigeria culturally.

If not for the problem of French language dominating Cameroon, Nigeria and Cameroon would have been far much closer to each other.

Yes it's, but law isn't that much enforced in Afar region like other Ethiopian regions. And there region is the hottest place on Earth, so it's very difficult for other people to live there. But, they are becoming friendly to other peoples lately. I've a friendly Afar classmate in Addis Ababa university.

The largest ethnic group in North-central Nigeria (the Tivs) are of Bantu origins. They are Bantu people and speak a Bantoid language, just that they have intermixed with other Nigerian groups for centuries and it has reduced their 'Bantuness' somehow.

There are other smaller ethnic groups too in North-eastern Nigeria with Bantu origins.

Most Nigerians are not aware of this, but yes, we have people of Bantu origins in Nigeria.
