Truly a mystery but is easily the biggest migration event in history, and an important one at that. I think population pressure brought about by farming and hence more crop production led to a cascade of factors including wars and disease. The more adventurous types could have just decided to move on and look for something new and better. We cannot rule out pressure from incoming arabs as well.

Well although we have oil, it only constitutes 10percent of GDP though it makes up 90% of exports. Telecommunication and Agriculture does more for Nigeria than oil.
Unfortunately though we should have benefitted more from oil like you said, oil refineries working but not to full capacity, Niger delta militants with their activities alone allow for billions to be wasted and of course corruption.
Note however, corruption in Kenya is also high and oil prices have not always been on the high especially in the nineties.
