I caught Jamille just as she was about to fall. Aunt Liz and her husband had already come into the living room.
I dropped Mille on the sofa. Rachel and Kara ran to her side. The bells of anger in my brain were ringing so loudly,threatening to blow my head into bits.
Philip,who had just realised the secret he spilled started moving towards the door ever so silently.
Unfortunately, I was faster. I grabbed him by the collar before he could reach the door and threw him down. He was taken aback by the sudden attack.
The bells in my head where ringing "Punch! Punch! Punch!"
On a normal day,I would have looked for how to appease them without being violent but today was no normal day.
I rained punches on the unfortunate idiot's face. I slapped and punched him till my hands ached but I cared less. His cry of pain rang throughout the compound. Only then did everyone know what was going on.
"Jathniel! No!" I didn't care to know whether it was Kara or Rachel's voice I heard. All I wanted was to kill the fool beneath me.
Both of them came to hold me back but I flung their hands away.
"Jathniel, son please." I knew that was aunt Liz. "For the love of God Jathniel,have mercy on him. I'm on my knees Jathniel,please spare him. You wouldn't want his blood to be on your hands please."
I paused and turned to her. She was indeed on her knees. I got up and went to her to pull her up.
"Aunt,why don't you just let me remove his head? How are you able to plead for him when he hurt Mille so much?"
She shook her head. "No son,let's do it the gentle way okay? Mille has been revived . Go and stay by her side,while I talk to Philip."
I nodded. She went out through the front door with Uncle Liam and Philip.
"Mille?" I called.
"Niel,I'm awake" She answered weakly.
"I don't know what to say to you Mille. I'm so angry right now. I wish I could kill him."
"I don't know what to say either. It's unbelievable that I've been in the same house with the person who's been threatening me. I don't even know how he knew about it Niel."
"Hush now. Just rest OK? I'm sorry about it."
She nodded and closed her eyes.
"Why does a 17 year old have to suffer this kind of stress?" I asked myself.
"Jathniel, are you ready to tell us what just happened?"
"No Rachel. I'll just go outside to get some fresh air outside. Keep an eye on her."
I was about to pass through the front door when I remembered Philip was there. I hissed and turned to pass through the kitchen door instead. I paced round the backyard trying to get myself together.
It was against my principle to be so aggressive but I broke it all because of Jamille.


Uncle Liam

"Philip, I'm disappointed in you." I finally spoke after the ten-minute silence.
"I'm sorry sir. It was..."
"The work of the devil right?"
He stood watching me like a frightened cat.
"I took care of you Philip. You came here as a driver three years ago when you were just 19.You were in first year then. You told me your story and I decided to pay for your education. Now,you're in final year and you've decided to pay me back for my kindness."
"Sir I..."
"Let me finish Philip. I still paid your salaries every month despite the fact I was sponsoring you. I always thought this fight between you and Kara was a joke. I'll surely scold her too,you know that right?"
He nodded.
"She never went beyond the words but you had the guts to bring an innocent child into
your baseless fight. Do you know how much that girl has suffered because of you? How did you even get ahold of such information?"
"Sir, that day I brought you from the airport with Kara and Rachel is when I knew about it."
"My husband asked you how and not when Philip." Liz was struggling to suppress the urge to yell.
"You and your wife stayed out really late that night in the sit-out. My room is just downstairs and it's the closest to the sit-out so I heard every word of what you discussed that night."
"Bravo Philip! Before today, I would have sworn you were a saint. Honey,I'm going to talk to Kara. I can't stand him anymore." Liz stormed back into the house.
"You've just made my wife mad Philip."
"I'm sorry sir. I don't know what came over me."
"That's what you all say Philip. I'm giving you two weeks to look for a place to stay. In the mean time,you'll move to the boys quarters and never step foot in my house. You cease to be my driver from today. And don't worry. I'll still pay your fees till the day you drop your pen as a student."
"Ha! Sir isn't the punishment too much. Please sir, I have no other source of income,please sir have mercy. I've repented sir."
I held him by the shoulder."I'm having mercy on you son. My wife would have done worse and the young man that gave you this design on your face would have killed you. You should be happy."
I turned my back on him and went inside the house.

“Let me finish mum. That’s the reason I vowed to make his life miserable. I’m sorry he had to drag Jamille into it. The truth is he doesn’t know that I know about it. I promise you mum, Philip Bassey hasn’t seen the last of me. I swear it.”
“Honey you know I hate swearing more than anything in the world.”
“Sorry mum but I’m not actually as good as you are.” I wiped the tears that had trailed down my face.
“Mum, I’ll be outside. I feel the walls closing in on me.” I got up from the floor and ran out through the back door. I bumped into Jathniel.
“Easy, Kara.” He held me.
“I’m sorry Jathniel. I just wasn’t looking at where I was headed.”
He flashed a smile at me,a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Let’s sit down then. We’re both in need of fresh air. Am I right?”
“You’re right as always Jathniel.” I sat down beside him.
“I’m not always right Kara. I still have a long way to go.”
“On a good day, I would have argued but I’m so not in the mood right now.” I twirled the tip of my braids around my fingers.
“Neither am I.” He said.
“ I guess mine’s worse. My two year old relationship with the guy whom I thought loved me more than his life just ended today. Turns out he made a bet to get me and I just found out today from one of his friends.”
“Yikes, I’m sorry about that. That’s a real shame.” He covered his face with his palms.
“It’s OK. My dad always thought he was bad luck.”
“Kara,could you spare a minute?” I turned and saw Rachel standing at the kitchen door.
“Sure. Excuse me Jathniel.”
She pulled me inside the house. She stopped at the living room,looked around and shook her head as if dissatisfied. She pulled me up the stairs to her room.
“Are you insane big sis?” she asked.
“What the hell! What did I do to you Rachel?”
“Don’t let Jathniel cloud your brain sis. The dude’s obviously attracted to Mille and you have your own boyfriend,so behave. Don’t make yourself look cheap to Jathniel.”
I rolled my eyes. “ I have no boyfriend Rachel. We’re over.”
“Well,that’s great news. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Face your medical books dear. One last thing,leave Jathniel alone.”
She winked and left the room.
