newafricaken254: The Nigerian Big Foot MRAPs have proven to be very effective in combat. You cannot compare a basic APC to a vehicle designed to counter IEDs. This is were you are wrong. |

newafricaken254: Yes, but the Kenyan vehicle was built along the lines of the French army VAB APCs. These vehicles were built when the threat of IEDs weren't common. The modern WZ551 from China has incorporated the lessons learned. They now come with a V-shaped hull. |

An APC is supposed to have better protection in all aspects than a MRAP by definition .Some form of mine protection (what is now called IED's for some reason) is supposed to be standard for APC's and IFV's for the last 60 years. Bottom and side attacking(PFF) mines have been used in conventional war for a long time. They are only different from IED's in the fact that they are industrially produced. The concept of the MRAP was to give vehicles that perform the job of humvee's ,landrovers etc. better protection in asymmetric warfare. Those Chinese AFV's would not make it past the first round of blast testing at Denel. As for the lower price. You're going to pay a higher price in lost lives and low morale. kabe1: 2 Likes |

Fidha254: No he wont, he can just bluff again... thats the whole point of his foreign policy - to be unpredictable, to be volatile. Nixon (who's foreign policy was masterfull) imployed simular tactics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madman_theory Obviously Trump knows where Afghan and Iraq is, he isnt known for his oratory... so what. The guy has an Ivy league education and runs over 250 companies - to assert that he is incompetent is to allow him to play you. No, these things have nothing to do with consensus. |

patches689:Al-Qaida used the same weapons they were given by the Americans to fight off the Russian. Infact, one would say the terrorist problem the world faces now, was fueled by decisions made then... Same as Lybia of today... This kind of thinking of now only without carefully looking in the long term will land our kids and grand kids in a worse situation...thats what am saying |

lionel4power: It all depends on the particular country's requirements. A nation like Chad has a very limited rail infrastructure and almost no heavy equipment transporters, which are necessary for tanks and BMPs and the like. Chad's logistics infrastructure is also very limited in the remote regions of the country where it has to do most of its fighting. Another thing absolutely necessary for tanks are workshops and adequate repair facilities. Armoured cars like the Eland do not require heavy equipment transporters and do not have to be moved by rail. They can self-deploy without consuming excessive fuel or breaking down repeatedly, which is what would happen if you tried to drive say, an Abrams or a Leclerc from one side of the Aouzou strip to the other without using a transporter. They do not require a large amount of maintenance equipment or sophisticated workshops like tanks. For example, you can easily take an Eland's turret off with a chain on a tree. This will not work with a tank for obvious reasons. They use much more cheap commercial parts and automotive components which are readily sourced and do not have to be flown in from a central depot or some specialised company overseas. And best of all they can be driven and repaired easily by people from rural areas who lack formal education or technical knowledge. These people currently make up the majority of Chad's armed forces. It is ten times easier for somebody from the nearest wadi village and maybe two weeks of very basic mechanic instruction to take an Eland's engine apart or repair its chassis as opposed to a tank and a heavier vehicle with several different wheel stations. In addition, most of Chad is sand or packed dirt. Tanks would be more mobile if there was a lot of mud and swamps, but there isn't. Armoured cars can go to the furthest regions of Chad except maybe the mountainous areas without difficulty, and respond to a rebel offensive in these regions much quicker than a tank/BMP/heavy wheeled vehicle like the Centauro. That is not to say that armoured cars like the Eland are best in every situation, however. They are not suitable for a country which 1) has lots of rough, muddy terrain and few roads, 2) is faced with the prospect of a major conventional war involving an enemy using their own tanks and heavily armoured vehicles, or 3) is developed enough to have a large fleet of transporters, a developed rail network, and thousands of well-trained tank mechanics. I have always maintained that it is not my desire to present vehicles like the AML/Eland as an ideal asset on any modern conventional battlefield. They are increasingly obsolete and I feel more of them need to be in museums or in the hands of collectors like myself. However, in this particular case they have continued to work well in lieu of more heavily armed and armoured vehicles, per the reasons above. 3 Likes |

Everybody wants to be a sniper! At what level should he be deployed? Section,/platoon,coy or battalion? This is determined by the distance which in turn is predicated upon by his unit's frontage, which isn't set in stone for motorised or mechanised warfare. Typically a coy AO will have a frontage of 500 max 800 m and a battalion anything from 2 to 5 km. Mind you, these figures do vary, depending on threat level, terrain, enemy formation and other factors. Imo,a sniper at the section or even coy level is too much. I'd go for a DMR guy,NOT SNIPER in each section, using a different variant of the same rifle as everyone else. eg,if all have SCARS,the DMR dude will have the SCAR SSR-if FN then the DMR variant, etc etc. Imo,the snipers are a true elite shooting over 10 even 20k rounds annually and shouldn't be misused as infantry. Therefore they'd have an independent platoon sized unit, including own armourers, spotters and security attached to the battalion level operating under the commanders discretion. Since we've enough 7.62s at the firing line I'd give them .338 Lapuas,.408 Cheytacs and the multical Denel NTW 20 firing rhe 14.7 and 20 mm. The first ranging out to 1.5 km will allow the sniper greater range over opposing 7.62 mm armed shooters. The Cheytac will shoot straight up to 2k m but lose much impact. The NTW 20 will take over and also penetrate MRAPS,LAVs and armoured cars up to 1 k. What says thread members? 1 Like

Btw,the KDF actually retired their sniper units in 79 but around a decade ago revived it. They had to get a Brit sniper to retrain them in long forgotten skills.
