Geoscientists Working In The Oil Industry: How Did You Get In? Share Your Story. by niyogeol(m): 11:15pm On May 27, 2017
The aim of this thread is for established geologists/geophysicists working in the Oil Industry to tell story of how they got into the Oil Industry. I believe sharing your stories here will inspire someone to get into the Industry in no distant time.

I will also appreciate if you can give an insight into your qualification(s), the category your work place falls under - wether operator, regulator or servicing company.

Your advice to people looking at starting a career in the industry. How best to get in.

It will also be of immense value if you can post vacancies (permanent, contract, and internship) in your work place or sister companies.

I believe a lot of people here, including yours truly won't mind doing placement without pay to have hands-on-experience.

I am looking forward to the contributions from the great geoscientists here.

Talk true, you are doing a survey to know if they really got the job on merit or via nepotism and other corrupt vices.

You can get involved in Geophysical surveys, soil tests in some Sedimentary region and borehole drilling in Basement complex areas start small and move up the ladder. You can be your own Boss.

This can't be true. To a large extent, recruitment by IOCs are highly competitive and most often time driven by merit. I just want to know how they got in.

Aside from Exxonmobil and Shell that advertise for entry level position for geoscientists, I hardly see other companies do same. So I want to know how other companies get people into the arena.

Your dreams are valid. Different strokes for different folks. If I may ask, in what specialisation are you looking at becoming this 'boss' of yours?

op you ask a very good question .i am a geophysicist ,a fresh graduate though ,really entering the industry is almost impossible but it takes determination and willingness.i am saying these not because am in the industry but because i have two close pal in the industry. The first one is in TOTAL and he is an exploration engineer but he got it the normal way we know. (summiting an exquisite CV,performing well in aptitude test and also the interview and mind you he was an OND holder before he was employed ).All of them where trained in china after the employment.OP my advice is these dont wait for employment in the industry ,start doing something because there is no time .I too love the industry but i indulge myself in something else (cisco networking and web developing).GOD we see us through .

How do you get involve? Didn't you see where I wrote even if It is doing so for free to get hands-on-experience.

I know how much I have networked with people both online and offline to get into the arena without pay. All to no avail. It is because of this that I started this thread.

Op leave the big names and start with an oil servicing company to get at least two years working experience before focusing your attention on the big names...

Bros it's almost like the saying that says it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to make heaven.

There are more engineers in the IOC's than there are geoscientists quote me anywhere.

I my self am a geology and mining graduate, from a second generation federal University, with a 2.1 and was on ExxonMobil and total scholarship while in schl, but now am working in a bank. I dreamt of working for shell, chevron, Schlumberger, Halliburton, Total, ExxonMobil and the likes, but as opportunities weren't forth coming had to improvise.
Now am contemplating leaving the banking sector to federal government job. That's the harsh reality.

Get something doing outside geoscience. If d oil job comes fine

My two cents

As lucrative as the course is, it may be sometimes frustrating kick-starting in that field. I had my Bsc in Applied Geophysics and my masters in Exploration Geophysics but as fate would have it, I didn't get to find my way into the industry. At the end, I ended up in another field entirely and I have built a lucrative six-year career in it.

my dear i got your message but you failed to read between lines to see my message. As a graduate the only way to get into that industry is by atrracting your employer with your CV , passing the aptitude test and interview.Really they dont need your skills ,according to my close pal he said after they employed them they ask them to dump everything they have learnt that its useless to them and they will teach them about there roles in the industry .That was when they took them to china.

I seriously dont know what went wrong? I have a bsc in geology and an Msc in peteoluem geoscience and yet i have still not been able to land a job in the oil industry since i graduated years back. |It has left me crestfallen and wondered why did i ever go this route and i remembered its because i loved geology and now its a thing of the past. That drive is dead. Now, i am looking for anything to do now just to be sane and keep myself busy from being depressed.

Sometimes i wonder why people keep saying geology is lucrative, the truth is not far fetched because is very difficult to see yourself in any of the oil sector, as for me am a geoscientist B.tech Geology. I decided to go into mineral consultancy.. now am doing great with it.. i think is better we start small, even if it means carrying terrameter for someone..

Fact is the reality after school is harsh for most of us. While in school we had romantic fantasies of immediately landing jobs in the oil and gas industry just by virtue of our high GPAs. Turns out it isn't that easy. Most lucrative jobs in the industry I've come across require years of cognate experience. Entry level jobs, if any, are very competitive, and a fresh graduate with some level of experience will almost often be preferred.
Still hoping for the IOC job though but I'm also trying to be at peace with the possibility that it might never happen.

The harsh truth is that we won't all land IOC jobs, but we can all explore the wide range of other opportunities in the geosciences.
