CAS STRATEGISES WITH FIELD COMMANDERS, COMMISSIONS UPGRADED FACILITIES AT PRIMARY FLYING TRAINING SCHOOL

As a follow-up to the successes recorded in the fight against insurgency in the country, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar held the 2017 Second Quarter meeting with Branch Chiefs, Air Officers Commanding (AOCs), Commandants and Commanders of various Nigerian Air Force (NAF) formations on 24 May 2017 in Kaduna. The purpose of the meeting was to appraise the overall performance of the NAF so far, identify gaps, review strategies and make projections for the next quarter. Accordingly, the meeting focused on operational activities, especially as it pertains to Internal Security, aircraft serviceability status, condition of facilities and other logistics issues, welfare of personnel, discipline, maintenance of standards, and judicious management of resources even as the AOCs gave accounts of stewardship in their various commands.
In his remarks at the meeting, the CAS emphasized the importance of regular meetings with field commanders in order to obtain feedback that would help to set new targets. While commenting on NAF participation in Internal Security operations, he said that the NAF had played a substantial role in tackling the challenges and would continue to do its best to defend the territorial integrity of Nigeria. He disclosed that the three newly established NAF units in Kerang, Gusau, and Owerri had settled down and started contributing to security in the respective states. The meeting was quite fruitful as significant decisions were reached, based on feedbacks obtained from the field commanders.
In another development, the NAF has upgraded the Air Traffic Control facilities at the control tower of the 401 Flying Training School (FTS) Kaduna. The newly provided facilities include a modern communication console with advanced meteorological equipment, all of which are aimed at enhancing primary flying activities and other air operations. The building of the control tower was also remodelled for effective and efficient air traffic services. Before the upgrade, the control tower relied on the Kaduna Civil Airport for the supply of daily metrological information and the training of Air Traffic Controllers. However, the newly upgraded control tower will be able to generate weather information and other airfield parameters for NAF flying activities and will equally serve as a training facility for air traffic controllers.
While commissioning the upgraded facilities on 24 May 2017, Air Marshal Abubakar disclosed that the NAF places much emphasis on primary flying training, noting that the new equipment would help to enhance the quality of training at 401 FTS, which is the starting point of flying training in the NAF. Speaking further, the CAS reaffirmed the commitment of the current NAF leadership to adding value to the equipment, infrastructure as well as the human being towards building the NAF capacity. “We believe that what we have here is going to add value to what we are doing in terms of training and air traffic control,” he added.

The Drive by the NAF to push it's self technology wise is very commendable. I hope that the CAS will continue in this role.

NAF young pilots decimate Boko Haram-NAF spokesman

Efforts by remnants of Boko Haram insurgents to regroup and launch attacks from the Sambisa forest and environs in the Northeast have been decimated by relentless efforts of young pilots of the Nigerian Airforce.

NAF spokesman, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya, who disclosed this at the weekend, said the war against the insurgents is largely been won from the air through brave efforts of the officers who are mostly Flight Lieutenants of the Airforce.

“In the past, war planes, including the heavy C-130 transport aircrafts were flown by senior officers of the rank of Air Vice Marshals (AVMs), but NAF has been modernised and there is now increased capacity in younger officers who are daily performing bombing raids on terrorist hideouts with efficiency and precision,” Adesanya said.

Most of the well-trained young pilots, including women, according to him, now fly warplanes almost 24-hours to prevent Boko Haram fighters from regrouping.

He urged the media and citizens not to sit aloof, but join the ongoing campaign to rid the country of terrorists and criminals. He particularly tasked the media to be objective in reporting NAF operations to avoid encouraging terrorists.

NAF HOLDS BASE DEFENCE RETREAT, PROVIDES ADDITIONAL TRAINING FACILITIES

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has held a retreat on Base Defence Planning. The retreat took place from 25-26 May 2017 at the recently commissioned Ibrahim Alfa Auditorium in the Air Force Institute of Technology Kaduna. The retreat was aimed at further educating relevant stakeholders on the new NAF base defence concept, which is premised on the development and deployment of an air-minded ground defence force, trained and equipped as special light infantry and capable of operating both inside and outside the base perimeter against contemporary threats while leveraging on intelligence and available modern technology. Consequently, participants at the retreat included base commanders, regiment officers, intelligence officers, air provost officer, all of who have specific roles to play in securing and defending NAF bases.
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the retreat, reminded participants that despite its potency, airpower still has limitations, one of which is the issue of security of bases. According to him, “Given the importance of bases in the airpower delivery matrix, it is not inconceivable to expect our adversaries to target our bases. As a matter of fact, we have had an attack on one of our airbases in the recent past, and current intelligence reports keep highlighting the possibility of attacks on our bases. All these reinforce the need to emplace a robust base defence concept that is capable of providing guidance for responding to a wide range of situations that may threaten our bases.”
It would be recalled that the emphasis of the former base defence concept in the NAF was the emplacement of static guards at identified key and vulnerable points. The current NAF leadership, however, viewed the concept as being no longer tenable and thus introduced the more robust base defence concept into the Service in 2016. Nevertheless, recent evaluations of the Bases revealed that many commanders and bases were yet to imbibe and adopt the tenets of the new base defence concept. The retreat therefore afforded participants the opportunity to rub minds and exchange ideas and experiences towards engendering effective implementation of the new concept across the NAF. With the conclusion of the retreat, NAF bases are expected to be safer, more secured and more capable of repelling any attack directed at them.
In a related development, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar commissioned the newly built Regiment Training Centre as well as an electronic shooting range, both in Kaduna, on 25 May 2017. An interesting development was the naming of the Regiment Training Centre and the electronic range after late Air Commodore Anthony Ikhazoboh and late Group Captain Williams Pratt respectively. Both retired senior officers, now dead, contributed significantly to NAF base defence, while in service and it was considered most befitting to honour them, as a way of encouraging those alive.
The Regiment Training Centre, which has the capacity to accommodate 300 trainees at a go, and the Electronic Range were constructed to further develop the capacity of personnel for base defence.
