Been occupied for the past few weeks working and carrying out research work within Lagos and its neighboring coastal parts of Ogun state. Ilaje areas of Ondo state is also not exempted....

In the midst of my work in this part of the country, i can authoritatively say its only about 30% of people in these areas that have access to good potable water in which Magboro, Ilupeju, Arepo and Ojodu happens to be the worst affected.

The other 70%, though have water in their various houses, but the water is somehow useless and not good for consumption of any kind. These waters have their alkalinity extremely high i.e they are basic, The EC also in very high range as well as the TDS. Also the total hardness is nothing to write about....seriously Hard.

All the properties are outside the minimum standard permissible level allowed by the WHO for portable water consumption.

But why do we have this problem...In simple tone...Salt water intrusion!!! The salt is gotten from the atlantic ocean, in addition to that, lagos have lot of creeks, rivers, lagoons and swamps. All these contributed to the deterioration of the good aquifer...even up till the mainlands.

Transgression and Regression. There is what we call seassonal inflow of the ocean into the land. When the ocean flows into the land, it doesnt just come and go, it comes with gifts...these gifts are sediments rich in desolved salt and iron. So when we have inflow of water, the sediments rich in iron and salt are deposited while the water flow back into the ocean, river, swamps, lagoon. In the process, contaminating the fresh aquifers in our environment.

....it is also human induced! Increasing population leading to increase in demand for potable water leading to excessive groundwater extraction. This activity will allow saltwater to quickly replace freshwater in the aquifer.

Most shallow boreholes are always at greater risk When it comes to replacement of fresh water with salt water in the aquifer. This usually takes months or years.

In the long run, more than 70% of boreholes drilled in these areas are later abandoned...
