'Little', 'a little', 'few' and 'a few' are called quantifiers. They are used to show the quantity of something.
Many English speakers often use these words in the wrong way.
Little and A little
Little and a little are used with uncountable nouns. ‘Little’ is used in a negative sense to mean hardly any or almost nothing.
i. He added little sugar to the tea. (It means he added almost no sugar to the tea)
‘A little’ means some but not much.
i. He added a little sugar to the tea. (It means he added some sugar to the tea)
Few and A few
Few and a few are used with countable nouns. ‘Few’ is used in a negative sense to mean not many.
i. Few students passed the examination. (It means none or not many student passed the examination)
‘A few’ means some or a small number of people.
i. A few students passed the examination. ( It means a small number of student passed the examination)
