Odegbami blows hot Rohr has nothing to offer Eagles
By Gbolahan Dada-August 19, 2016

Former Super Eagles skipper, Chief Olusegun Odegbami, has kicked against the employment of German coach, Gernot Rohr, saying he is not competent to transform the fortunes of Nigerian football.

The ex-Shooting Stars Football Club of Ibadan winger, said Rohr has nothing to offer Eagles, adding that he is just using the Nigeria job to boost his coaching credentials.

Speaking about how NFF hired the German coach, Odegbami said, “Nigerians want the Super Eagles to return to winning ways. Winning is what unites them. It is an integral part of what made them the happiest people in the world a few years ago. Victories by their football teams cushion the psychological depression of failure in other sectors, if only temporarily.

“Nigerians have missed the buzz that comes with winning in the past two years. They want it back quickly. The NFF know it and have chosen the path of a foreign coach to rescue the situation. But this is obviously a very big gamble considering Nigeria’s past experiences with foreign coaches since Jo Bonfrere exited about a decade ago,” he said.

Odegbami stressed that the 2018 World Cup will provide the platform for the next big challenge. “For the NFF, it is a matter of ‘lose and sink’, or ‘succeed and survive’. Deep down they know it.

So, I can understand why it is important for them and for everyone else to be interested in who takes over the national team at this critical time after the last two crisis-laden experiences under Nigerian coaches, the late Stephen Keshi and Sunday Oliseh.”

Odegbami argued that if Nigeria should hire a foreign coach, she should have employed the best in the world and not just a mere tactician from Germany.

“Let me state clearly that I have nothing against the idea of hiring the best foreign coaches for Africa’s national teams. But no foreign coach shall get an iota of my support unless he has the credentials, the experience and the pedigree that clearly dwarfs those of the best African locals available, period.

“For Nigeria to qualify for the 2018 World Cup is a huge mountain to climb, but we are all waiting, watching, praying and wishing Gernot Rohr well, despite any misgivings,” he said.

The former Director of the National Institute for Sports said Nigerian football “is suffering from colonial mentality”, as we value foreigners more than local coaches.

“The truth is bitter. But Europe, Asia and the America’s will never (at least not in this lifetime) give a Nigerian coach, no matter his resume, the opportunity to coach a big foreign club or national team, exactly what our administrators demand as prerequisite to confidently hire them to handle the senior national team.

“How will any Nigerian coach, therefore, ever be qualified to handle the national team? Where would they gain and gather the required experience, if not from Nigeria itself and probably a few African countries as in the case of Stephen Keshi?

“Is Daniel Amokachi’s sensational decision to handle a foreign fourth division club in the remote lesser league of Norway driven by the desire to fulfil this far-fetched requirement by our administrators?” he asked.

Meanwhile, as regards the list for the SA match:

First of all, I would like to express my deepest sympathies to the SA coach who already profiled Victor Moses as one of our dangermen, forgetting that V Moses does not play AFCON Qualifiers grin

Secondly, while I don't advocate for Ebuehi to start, lest those Bafana boys run him off the field, he should get 30-35 minutes on the field in the game, like has already been said, I feel for him with his first game being so....well, unfriendly. He will get better though and I'm glad he has Troost to show him road

Thirdly, the team is very young, is there any outfield player above 25 on that list apart from Onazi, Ogu, Musa, Omeruo and Echiejile?

Fourth, I do think that despite their youth, this team should do the job against SA (hopefully)

Fifth, while we congratulate Muazzam for scaling through, let us all remember that the absence of some big boys may have helped his inclusion, same goes for Osimhen. If V Moses were there, I doubt anyone would see Osimhen's name

Six, is Youssouf Nigerian? If yes, why is his own name spelt funny? undecided

Seven, Awaziem is my new Nigerian footballer crush grin...still love Awo baby and Mikel grin

I don't know how to reply this interview, because I don't have time for this kind of crab, but to say that I am disappointed is an understatement . I'm sure odegbami is suffering from some kind of sickness like typhoid and malaria . These are the type things our honourable minister of sports would say

Let me make it simple...MOST English players are not crafty, since technique has taken another meaning. They are too direct and simple, lacks invention and innovation. We call it police football.

I will qualify your statement with YES.

But with an additional proviso, which is most English white players play football they way they dance. Which is they cannot.

Go across the football League academies and the first thing you notice the ballers are mostly black. I am talking from first hand experience and most times they brought it there, they didn't learnt it from English coaches. Essentially you can't teach what you don't know.

Now look at the young Nigerian players cutting it. Ademola, The two Tega's, Onyedinma, etc etc, and then senior bros Aluko. Even the disgruntled Nigerian Dele Alli is a baller.

Again,"most" and not all. Beckham,Mcmanaman, and Lampard have one thing in common...long passes. A typical English style. Rooney and Gerrard are the exceptions.

Gerrard is and was not an exception he played driving the team forward with long range super accurate passes. And lethal shot from distance scored multiple goals.

But dribbling, ghosting past people and short passes that's not his game.

He is on the outside looking in so we can expect a few misconceptions. The fact is that our foreign born players might have all had that fear before they were convinced. Pinnick said he had to convince the Iwobi's about that fact that things would be run differently in Nigeria. I don't see anything damaging about what he said or at least anything to get worked up about.
