The Oyo State Government is to generate 1,000 megawatts from wastes following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with some power-generating firms. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/06/oyo-generate-1000-megawatts-wastes/ 3 Likes 1 Share |

Is this true? If it is thats pretty surprising. I thought Egbin would been export all this time. Other than that seems like good news if these companies execute on this MOU. Fashola will be closer to his goals of 10k MW without much sweat. Mr Nasir Giwa, the representative of Siemens International, said that the state on completion of the project would be the first to sell or export power to the national grid. 5 Likes |

Very ambitious but they should look at the feasibility. To generate 25MW of electricity from waste; you will need 400,000 tonnes of waste a year to be fed into the system and This is using fluidized bed technology. Other technologies are less efficient and you get less energy. So imagine the amount of waste needed to generate 1000 MW. There is also competition for the suitable waste( waste with high calorific content) that the system needs. Plastics already being collected by pickers and used tyres. All they have left is organic waste and household waste which i doubt would be enough. Anyway lets watch and see 28 Likes 1 Share |

Until we see it on ground, many Governors over the years have signed MOUs with nothing to show for it! 18 Likes 1 Share |

Enyimbamercedes: I want to think that the experts involved in the project have done the requisite feasibility studies before arriving at the stated capacity. Also, bear in mind that in the last released report by an international organization, Waste Atlas ( http://www.atlas.d-waste.com/Documents/Waste-Atlas-report-2014-webEdition.pdf ), Ibadan alone was found to have two out of the largest waste dump sites in Nigeria (top 5), and also featured amongst the top 50 largest in the world -- for sometime now the city has produced increasing numbers of millionaires from amongst individuals operating within the waste management space. So it may indeed be feasible to generate that much energy from all that waste. 6 Likes |

ODVanguard: 375,000 tonnes in place just enough for a hour's operation. Note that I said to generate 25 MW you need 400,000 tonnes a year Now compute what you need to keep the system working for a day. They may need to import waste. They need to lower there generation projection. Even of you combine the Lapite site, it will still not be sufficient. Now if they bring in waste from Lagos then you'll be talking about something feasible! 2 Likes |

Enyimbamercedes: Perhaps that could be their business model. After all, you don't need to produce crude oil to own a viable refinery -- crude can always be imported to feed the facility. 8 Likes 1 Share |

Nigerian Governors and signing of MOUs is like (where is that Zuma picture) Nothing was said about when the contractor will mobilize to site and start clearing the site or when the equipment will start arriving for installation. Many foreign firms sign MOUs in Nigeria to build power stations as a means of getting import waivers to import other products into the country under the guise of doing a power project; we wont celebrate this until they give the public details and timeline about how to achieve it, not this usual circus show. We have seen several companies saying they have signed MOUs to build 1000MW Solar Plants in many states in the North but not a single one of them is on ground apart from Federal Govt direct projects... 11 Likes 1 Share |
