It is always easier to nip small problems before they become something you can't control, especially when it's so easy to resolve. By showing this, he effectively puts to rest any kind of noise about partiality in appointments. Also heaven didn't fall and Nigeria didn't burn, but it quiets a lot of potential grumbling. If anybody starts making noise, at least people will give him benefit of doubt.
