Beautiful footage from that view.

How many Ratels are in service with the SANDF?

1100+

~500 active duty
~600 reserve forces/storage

Now consider this.

Look at the number active with just the professionals... and look at the number of Badgers ordered... see a problem? Me too.

The iKlwa should have been green-lighted.

4 policemen and one civilian died,i believe alshabaab used a massive IED to destroy that CS/VP3 MRAP. just as Taliban did to american/british cougar/mastiff MRAPS.we can nolonger really on the armour of this MRAP's for protection,we need army EOD teams to constantly sweep roads prone to IED attacks(the fools in kenya, are now claiming every equipment bought from china is fake)anyone has a link that hows south africa helped in the development of CS/VP3 MRAP.

deviation (intended or unintended) from SOP in a COIN/CT area when IED have been used by alshabaab before .

MRAPS r never foolproof ,they r a fallback buttress , primary defence is IED sweeps as dictated by SOP being followed in the CT area.

Maoists used to use 40 kg explosives IEDs to target MRVs , later they started using 200 kg + when they realized that the 40kg IEDs were ineffective.

no MRV can withstand 200+ kg blast under the hull ,so only defence is IED sweep and strict adherence to SOP as dictated by the local CT operations

The Badger would partially replace the Ratel... You will still see Badgers and Ratels in the same formation until a miracle happens the DoD swims on much-needed cash.

Also don't forget the Kats in reserves, they'll fillup the gap left by the Ratel 90. As Mech61 once said, just take them out of storage and put a 105mm turret and you'll be sorted.

That's exactly why i asked. I saw a significant problem.

It is not possible to replace 1100 vehicles with just 258 other vehicles, no matter how advanced the MoD claims they are.

There's going to be a significant shortfall in capability.

I don't believe the entire Ratel fleet would be taken out of service. With the paucity of funds, upgrading the last batch(newer) of Ratels in the SANDF service would be the only way to plug gaps.

The Ratel will be replaced in a phased approached. The Badgers will come in drips and draps unlike during wartime.

The iKlwa become the RG-35 which is performing well with the UAE military. Produces there as the Jais(Leopard) MRAP.

NAF HOLDS MEDICAL OUTREACH FOR IDPs IN BORNO STATE

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), through its Medical Services Branch, recently organized a medical outreach programme for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at the Mainok, Benishek and Jakana IDP Camps in Borno State. The programme, which held from 1 – 3 June 2017, is one of the series of medical outreaches scheduled to hold at various IDP camps in the State during the Ramadan period. The outreach addressed various medical challenges confronting the IDPs in the 3 selected camps. In particular, the NAF medical team conducted eye tests and other tests to monitor vital signs of the IDPs at no cost to them. Subsequently, medicated eyeglasses as well as preventive and curative drugs were given to the IDPs as necessary, all free of any costs.

Speaking during an interview, the Director of Humanitarian Services at Headquarters of the NAF, Air Commodore Harold Onyechi said the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar is always interested in providing free medical care as part of its contributions to the welfare of IDPs all over the country. Furthermore, he expressed satisfaction in the huge turnout, which was an indication of the people’s appreciation of the gesture from the NAF. He also believed it was an acknowledgement of the value that the NAF was adding in providing the much needed medical succour to IDPs in the camps.

A total of 3,075 IDPs from Benishek, Mainok and Jakana IDP Camps in Borno State benefited from the 3-day exercise. The NAF has so far provided free healthcare to over 400,000 IDPs through its medical outreach programmes since inception in 2015. It would be recalled that the NAF is also currently operating 2 emergency hospitals at Dalori and Bama IDP camp.

NAF RESTATES COMMITMENT TO SUPPORT FAMILIES OF ITS FALLEN HEROES

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, yesterday reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) towards the welfare of the families of deceased personnel. The CAS gave this assurance while commissioning a new block of 12 by one-bedroom flats for airmen and airwomen at NAF Base, Abuja. The new building was named after late Corporal Omaka WI.

The CAS, who was represented by the Chief of Administration (COA), Air Vice Marshal Lawal Alao, said that the naming of the building after the late Corporal Omaka WI was to honour the late airman who died in 2016 while on Internal Security operations in Minna, Niger State. He added that the NAF would continue to remember and support families of fallen heroes to serve as a morale booster to other personnel.

It is recalled that the NAF, under its current leadership, has witnessed the commissioning of several residential accommodation blocks across its bases all over the country. According to the Director of Administration (DOA), Air Commodore Nelson Calmday, accommodation sufficiency in the NAF has improved from “45 per cent as at 2015 to over 63 per cent at the moment”. Meanwhile, the Commander of 053 NAF Camp Abuja, Air Commodore Garba Yusuf, used the opportunity to express appreciation to the CAS for the provision of additional residential accommodation for NAF personnel within Abuja.

PERSONNEL WELFARE: NAF COMMISSIONS NEW RESIDENTIAL ACCOMMODATION AT BASES IN YENAGOA, WARRI

In a renewed commitment at improving the welfare of its personnel for effective and efficient service delivery, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) yesterday commissioned a block of 6 flats of 2 bedrooms each at NAF Base Yenagoa. The new residential quarters would address the current accommodation challenge being faced by Principal Staff Officers of Headquarters Mobility Command. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Yenagoa, the Special Guest of Honour, Air Vice Marshal Emmanuel Edem (Retired) stated that it was highly commendable for the NAF to put up such a befitting structure for its personnel in spite of dwindling resources. According to him, it was an attestation of visionary and prudent management of resources by the current NAF leadership. "It is very clear that the Chief of Air staff (CAS) in the face of daunting challenges and scarce resources has shown sufficient commitment to the welfare of NAF personnel", he said.

Earlier in his remarks, the CAS, represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal James Gbum, disclosed that the project and other similar projects were carried out through direct labour. This approach had not only saved the NAF much needed resources but had also improved the technical capacity of Works personnel. The CAS also noted that the multiplier effects of a conducive working and living environment on serviceability rate of platforms and the training of aircrew could not be overemphasized.

In a related development, 4 Single Officers' Quarters (SOQ) and a block of 10 one-bedroom flats for airmen/airwomen were also commissioned at 371 Forward Operations Base Warri. The new blocks of residential accommodation were commissioned by His Royal Highness, Avwaeke 1 Ovie of Umiagwa Abraka Kingdom, Air Vice Marshal Lucky Ararile (Retired), who was the Special Guest of Honour at the event. In his remarks, His Royal Highness commended the efforts of the NAF in adding aesthetic value to the landscape in Warri area, with its increasing presence. The Special Guest of Honour also thanked NAF personnel for their sacrifice towards defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria. He then urged them to remain loyal, dedicated and professional in the course of undertaking their assignments. The highlight of the occasion was the presentation of keys to some beneficiaries.

Just for comparison......the Casspir can withstand 3.5 times the TNT equivalent than the CS/VP3......and you can buy refurbished Casspir for ridiculous amounts....think something like $50000 I read somewhere.

NAF HOLDS BASE DEFENCE RETREAT, PROVIDES ADDITIONAL TRAINING FACILITIES

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has held a retreat on Base Defence Planning. The retreat took place from 25-26 May 2017 at the recently commissioned Ibrahim Alfa Auditorium in the Air Force Institute of Technology Kaduna. The retreat was aimed at further educating relevant stakeholders on the new NAF base defence concept, which is premised on the development and deployment of an air-minded ground defence force, trained and equipped as special light infantry and capable of operating both inside and outside the base perimeter against contemporary threats while leveraging on intelligence and available modern technology. Consequently, participants at the retreat included base commanders, regiment officers, intelligence officers, air provost officer, all of who have specific roles to play in securing and defending NAF bases.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the retreat, reminded participants that despite its potency, airpower still has limitations, one of which is the issue of security of bases. According to him, “Given the importance of bases in the airpower delivery matrix, it is not inconceivable to expect our adversaries to target our bases. As a matter of fact, we have had an attack on one of our airbases in the recent past, and current intelligence reports keep highlighting the possibility of attacks on our bases. All these reinforce the need to emplace a robust base defence concept that is capable of providing guidance for responding to a wide range of situations that may threaten our bases.”

It would be recalled that the emphasis of the former base defence concept in the NAF was the emplacement of static guards at identified key and vulnerable points. The current NAF leadership, however, viewed the concept as being no longer tenable and thus introduced the more robust base defence concept into the Service in 2016. Nevertheless, recent evaluations of the Bases revealed that many commanders and bases were yet to imbibe and adopt the tenets of the new base defence concept. The retreat therefore afforded participants the opportunity to rub minds and exchange ideas and experiences towards engendering effective implementation of the new concept across the NAF. With the conclusion of the retreat, NAF bases are expected to be safer, more secured and more capable of repelling any attack directed at them.

In a related development, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar commissioned the newly built Regiment Training Centre as well as an electronic shooting range, both in Kaduna, on 25 May 2017. An interesting development was the naming of the Regiment Training Centre and the electronic range after late Air Commodore Anthony Ikhazoboh and late Group Captain Williams Pratt respectively. Both retired senior officers, now dead, contributed significantly to NAF base defence, while in service and it was considered most befitting to honour them, as a way of encouraging those alive.

The Regiment Training Centre, which has the capacity to accommodate 300 trainees at a go, and the Electronic Range were constructed to further develop the capacity of personnel for base defence.

NAF COMMISSIONS NEW BUILDING; PRESERVES MEMORIES OF FALLEN HEROES
In continuation of the current NAF leadership’s resolve to enhance the living condition and welfare of its officers and men, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar today commissioned two new residential quarters for its officers in Abuja. Air Marshal Abubakar used the opportunity to honour another set of gallant NAF officers who lost their lives in the course of servicing the Nation.
The buildings were named after Squadron Leader Benjamin Ado and Flying Officer Ayuba Layelmenson who lost their lives on 6 May 2013 in an air crash involving the NAF Alpha jet combat aircraft near Niamey, Niger Republic. According to the CAS, ‘‘the 2 blocks we are commissioning today have been appropriately named after 2 of our gallant officers who died while on active duty in 2013 during the Africa Led International Support Mission to Mali.” He further disclosed that immortalizing the two pilots was in consonance with the administration’s efforts at preserving the memories of NAF fallen heroes and heroines.
Air Marshal Abubakar used the occasion to thank the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari for the constant support given to the NAF. He then pledged the unalloyed commitment of NAF officers and men towards sustaining Nigeria’s democracy. Keys were presented to beneficiaries of the newly built quarters immediately after the commissioning ceremony.

For what it's worth, some of the Ratels are indeed being brought up to much more modern standards whenever the funding has come through.

For example, the upgraded turrets and sophisticated fire control systems installed on the Ratel-60s. That's something the DoD has accomplished only in the past five or six years as far as I can tell.

So despite the adoption of the Badger money is still being budgeted and spent for improving the existing Ratel fleet.
