Hmmmmmmm, this lies has been peddled for soo long in d North, that all northerners whether young or old all the time believe in it. I have been in d North for over 25 years and whenever this lie raise up, I laughed.
When there was regional government in, the north mainly produce groundnut and cotton for export, the east produce palm oil for export while d West produce cocoa for export. Everybody was on his own and remit some percentage to d federal government. So, i don't believe that d North are solely responsible for d search of oil and building of refinery, rather it was d collective effort of every region. But many youths in d North don't know this, they only believe that it was northern resources that was use, cos this lie has been on for very long time.

Professor Ango Abdullahi actually repeated this lie recently. He said this, ironically, while exhorting Emir Sanusi II to “go and read history.” The truth is that not a dime of northern Nigeria’s money contributed to oil exploration in the Niger Delta.

When oil was discovered in commercial quantities in Oloibiri in 1956, Shell bore the financial burden for the exploration. Other Euro-American oil companies later joined in oil exploration. It wasn’t until 1973 that the Nigerian federal government acquired 30 percent shares in oil companies. By 1973, Northern Nigeria had ceased to exist; it had been divided into states.

In any case, colonial records show that the biggest motivation for amalgamating northern and southern Nigeria was because northern Nigeria wasn’t financially self-sustaining and the British Imperial Government said it would never subsidize colonial administration anywhere in Africa. So Lord Lugard amalgamated the two regions and used the surplus from the south to sustain the north. It’s illogical to say that a region that wasn’t financially self-sustaining financed oil exploration in the Niger Delta.

During the Araba riot that the north was ready to break from Nigeria one of the reasons Britain used to stop their plan was that they(British) ran the North from the money got from the South.Actually the amalgamation of 1914 was as a result of economic reason because the north was not economically viable.The south that was administered with the Gold coast(Ghana) had to join wt the north to get revenue.
The West had cash crops such as cocoa,coffee,rubber,palm produce when the east was(& still)blessed with oil
The north was known mainly for groundnut pyramid.
Even now,the west still has cash crops but not in commercial quantity as before while the east has oil but groundnut pyramid has since faded away.

This is the foolish mentality I hear from this people. That groundnut pyramid was used to develop the south. How much is groundnut? If it was used to develop the south, has it not been paid back since oil was discovered and the north just sat back to be getting allocation from Abuja? Careful how u support the north cos those guys recognize no allies. I usually dont want to comment on tribal issues but i'll drop my two pence. With the hatred expressed here towards Yorubas; how do you feel any will trust your Biafra enthusiast to support them. Yorubas dont like the Hausas mutually but liking Biafrans would have been easier if not for the superior complex exhibited by a relevant minority.

Wheneva you guys have issues with the North, your first call is Afonja this and that. Instead of facing those you have issues with, you tend to circumvent to blame Yorubas.

How does Biafra creation affect an average Yoruba man? It has neither negative or positive effect. Instead of being diplomatic and avoid generation of ill feelings from a region you know is known for diplomacy; you guys feel generating hatred is the best option.

I am a nobody to implore people but still I will advice Yorubas to stay out of issues involving Biafrans. Cos am sure we are not ready to force people to stay. I repeat: no one wants to force you to stay. Create Biafra and enjoy it. Other regions too will survive; so will yours.
