WORLDPEACE:

We don't have a coach. It's very evident. You can see that man has no clue what to do next. What that team needed from the very beginning was directness.
Are you sure?

I agree it's more of a midfield problem. Also South Africans are not scared of Akpeyi -- bad choice by Rohr.

TheGoodJoe:
There is always a lesson to learn in defeat and the German tactician and his technical team needs to study the tapes carefully and know where we lack. We missed Mikel Obi today and our defensive midfield was too disorganized. It is a mistake blaming the defence because they were all over the place. We lost shape, especially in the second half and we paid dearly for it.

Awaziem and Ekong did their very best. They made loads of interceptions and won the ball repeatedly. With the wide gap in the midfield, we were going to pay for it with time and it happened.

I hope this is the last we see of Akpeyi. His footwork is delightful but his goal keeping skills is awful. He has no command of the eighteen yard box and the idea of him not training with the defence is atrocious. How will he have understanding with his team mates if he trains separately from them.

My biggest fear today was us paying for our decision of playing a weaker goal keeper due to his experience a devoted we paid dearly for it. No disrespect to Akpeyi but he is not just up to it.

sir. It seems this was their first game you'll be watching. Go ask Zambia, Algeria they'll tell you more.

I see this defeat as a blessing in disguise. Rohr and the team will learn from it.
lol.. I may have exaggerated a bit out of anger.

But you guys hype these guys more than their actual ability, a lot.
It's a common thing here.
It was on this same thread people were calling mikel world class

I blame that GK coach more than Rohr for that.

I think we need to change our GK coach. We want a scounting GK coach, not a lazy one. We have better options in the NIgerian domestic league. They have to be tested.

The first goal wasn't entirely Akpeyi's fault.. Where were the central defenders to allow for that free header

those blaming Ndidi are oblivious as to how a two man dmf system works. I noticed it when Chelsea played this season, once they concede you will see Luiz talking to Matic and never to Kante because Kante is the roaming dmf, he has no business with sitting deep except when under pressure, once the pressure let's up a little he bombs forward and leaves the space for Matic. that was what we tried to replicate in this match with Ndidi playing the Kante role and he did it well, above average in fact but Onazi is no Matic, work rate he has that well enough but awareness, passing accuracy and the rest he has none. people see him running around and start shouting but he isn't actually doing his job, if he must play then Ndidi should not play and a player like Ogu will sit deep and he will also have a creative player like Mikel or Iwobi ahead of him so that all he needs to do is win back possession and drop the ball. this is basic coaching stuff

Today common sense and speed won the game.

First half was to defend and frustrate the Eagles to come out to score and it worked perfectly. grin

They already knew our defenders no fit run hence the rapid counter attacks from the midfield. Chai! grin

Thank God no bi Cameroon else it is over. grin

That would've made sense if we had someone who could dictate play from deep. Unfortunately neither Onazi or Ndidi can do that. Ogu should've started with Mikel not around. Rohr should've taken a risk and started Onyekuru.
Henry will be lost in this kind of game...

Heat of the moment or not Rohr deserves the lion share of the blame by default.

It was definitely a midfield problem and I think I will have to throw Ndidi under the bus here. I can excuse Onazi's reckless style of play because he has the tank to mop up the gaps he creates. However, Ndidi should bear the responsibility of protecting the defence. The central pair were exposed all day. It is also time we fix the left back role. We were lucky we were not up against someone like Gervinho in his good days. He would have destroyed us.

We need someone in the mould of Oliseh who is more inclined to defend than attack. Also have the ability to pick players in spaces with long gaps.

Ndidi has the quality but it is time he takes that responsibility.

Ndidi was off today simple as that. His touch let him down one too many times and he wasn't influential with his passing.

Of course, Ajagun is a natural attacking midfielder and he's miles ahead of Azubuike.

It was clearly Awaziem at fault on the first goal but Akpeyi was just poor today. I normally come to his defense but today was just too bad.

Naturally, if you were to pick between Onazi and Ndidi to seat deep and one to roam, who will you pick?

I am blaming both but Ndidi takes it more because he is the one with the ability to shield that defence completely and hit the right passes into space.

Ndidi needs to take that responsibility from now on.

But Enyeama was in goal in d last match against South Africa and conceded two goals.

Simple question who is the best goalkeeper in Africa.

It doesn't mean he is superman you still need your defenders to defend.

Failure is the precursor to Success.

So it's better we realise where we are instead of being delusional. Friendlies are indicative and not conclusive about progression.

Where did we go wrong

Before this match I asked the question is this team the best collection of players available to Nigeria certainly not.

Now possibly they will give Rohr the free hand to invite the best players. If Enyeama was in post we would not have conceded any of those goals. He would have screamed instructions to the last defender to open his eyes and stop ball watching.

Enyeama was in Uyo and nobody could say let's call him in. Unnecessary bad belle politics in the NFF.

With all due respect, our coach goofed big time. It almost looked like someone made his list and formations for him. And please let us forget this Enyeama thingy. You knw why, he too can make similar mistakes. U wanna contest that? U might wanna take a look at our match against france. Enyeama made his bed, please let him lie in it! at some point, he will need a replacement and that is the phase we are in. Unfortunate that we lost our core players to injuries. Mikel was definitely missing. Victor Moses needs a little talking to. Ikeme needs to get back in shape. Adios to Akpeyi in my books. Big for nothing and just lacks anticipation and timeous reaction. Playing simon on the left in the 2nd half worked a bit .

Musa still the clueless dude he is and has always been. His first touch of the ball, a corner kick was one of his worsts.

if NFF won't make the first move, then Enyeama should offer his services.

You don't just sit by and watch a team you are passionate about combust. If he approaches them and they say no, then by all means, I will take up Enyeama's fight too.

Two people cannot be hot tempered and make leeway, one person has to be ready to calm down and it will not always be the erring party.

When Enyeama comes to camp is encouraging the boys what more do you want him to do. He has made it plain clear to Amaju and others he cannot enforce himself on the team.

2019 Africa Cup of Nations Group E qualifier Nigeria vs South Africa match report

Bafana Bafana ousted Nigeria with a convincing 2-0 scoreline in their opening 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Group E qualifier in Uyo, Nigeria on Saturday.

Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau were the heroes as Bafana managed their first ever victory over the Super Eagles in a competitive match.

As expected, the home side took control of the game early on as they won a corner in as early as the third minute, with Eric Mathoho closing down Alex Iwobi on the by-line to block the attempted cross.

Three minutes later, Mathoho was called to deal with Moses Simon's cross from the right but he scuffed his clearance before Ramahlwe Mphahlele's came to the rescue with a well-timed slide challenge inside the box.

Wilfed Ndidi powered his way into the box just after 10 minutes but his volleyed effort failed to trouble Itumeleng Khune, as it whisked past his goals.

Appeals for a penalty from Nigeria were then waved away by Tunisian refree Youssef Essrayri, after the ball hit Thulani Hlatshwayo's trailing arm following his attempted block inside the box.

Midway through the first half, Etebo Oghenekaro came closest for the Super Eagles as he ghosted into the box to get on the end of a cross, but his effort was poorly hit and trickled wide of the mark.

Hlatshwayo did a great job in reading an attempted through-ball as he intercepted a pass through the middle, with Kelechi Iheanacho making the run in behind.

Bafana's best chance came three minutes before the break as Langerman did well down the left to whip in a cross into the box, with Daniel Akpeyi fumbling his catch and allowing Themba Zwane a open goal to aim at, but the winger somehow only managed to hit the upright.

Just under 10 minutes into the second half, Tokelo Rantie opened the scoring with a glancing header at the near-post to give the visiting side the lead. Mphahlele's excellent delivery from the right made it easy for the striker.

The hosts almost came close to drawing level in the 78th minute when Mathoho's shocking attempt resulted in a goalmouth scramble, but Ahmed Musa, Olarenwaju Kayode and Etebo Oghenekaro somehow failed to hit the target before Dean Furman was on hand to clear inches away from the goal-line.

Substitute Percy Tau then doubled Bafana's lead seconds after replacing Rantie as Keagan Dolly's pin-point pass released the forward on a counter and, with Nigeria having commited numbers in attack, the forward cooly rounded Akpeyi to slot into an empty net with nine minutes to play.

Bafana were forced to drop deep to keep a resurgent Nigerian attack at bay, and could have added to the scoreline but Lebogang Manyama could not hit the target, with Percy Tau and Themba Zwane combining well up front.

The visitors held on for a stunning victory as coach Stuart Baxter recorded his second win over the Super Eagles, with the last coming in a friendly international at the Ellis Park Stadium back in 2004.

This win sees South Africa move to second in the group, following Libya's 5-1 victory over Seychelles on Friday evening.

Nigeria next travel to Seychelles while Bafana host Libya in the second round of AFCON qualifying fixtures in March next year.

TEAMS:

Nigeria: Akpeyi, Shehu, Awaziem, Ekong, Elderson, Onazi, Ndidi, Etebo, Simon, Iwobi (Musa 59'), Iheanacho (Kayode 71').

South Africa: Khune, Mphahlele, Langerman, Mathoho, Hlatshwayo (c), Furman, Zungu, Zwane, Dolly (Mabunda 85'), Vilakazi (Manyama 65'), Rantie (Tau 80').

The major things I learnt this game are
Nigeria has no NO9 ihenancho is naturally a supporting striker
We need to recall Vincent enyeama our goal keeping department is rubbish
We need an attacking midfielder a natural one
No playing chemistry between these players
Rohr got the tactics wrong by playing air balls over a very physical team like south Africa.

So Alampasu would have been the best choice? Chai na wa.

The fragility and inexperience of both CBs were exposed today. Poor man marking by Awaziem cost us that first goal. And where were the CBs for Onazi to even be the one chasing the SA 2nd goal scorer.

If it was Omeruo that had the kind-of game Awaziem had today. You will not be making the kind of remarks you just made about that CB pairing.

Nididi was busy playing to the gallery and forgot his defensive duties. Onazi did not do well enough to provide the link with The Attackers.

Say the truth and stop applying sentiments.

Give Alampasu his rightful chance. The experience keeper talk does not add up. Both young and old make mistakes but we stand a better chance with the best hands.

We also need a shield. Ndidi should bear that responsibility but If Agu is the better option to pair with our ball playing defenders, then so be it.
