If standard procedures were followed, they weren't entirely free of charge.

The Ugandan government would still have to pay all shipping costs, plus the cost of refurbishing the vehicles until they reach a standard that they can be approved for export.

Depending on the terms of the agreement, Uganda may have also been asked to pay for any additional inventories of parts they'll need to keep the SAMILs running.

It's common for the SANDF to donate large numbers of vehicles to another country, which must then cough up additional funds for the associated logistics, transport, and refurbishment. A third party contractor like OTT Technologies, Mechanology, or Paramount Group is then brought in to handle all of that, and profits accordingly.

For example when the SANDF committed to donate 90 SAMILs and Ratel-90s to the CAR, they were never shipped because the latter had happily agreed to the "donation" without taking into account they would have to foot the bill for dozens of cargo flights into Bangui, the refurbishing of the vehicles to meet certain export standards, and all the associated parts and 90mm ammunition, which were not being provided and would have to be bought separately.

Naturally the CAR had insufficient funds for all of the above, so the vehicles were sitting on an airstrip somewhere and were finally claimed by the third party contractor as compensation for their troubles.

Oh well, well stated. So with all the excess equipment they keep throwing around, do you think they'll have excess R5s for donations? I have a few cats that always trigger my alarm that I'll like to deal with grin

Yes that's for sure our defence relationship with USA is taking us nowhere... The first to talk about human right violation but they are the ones always violating it.

one of the scenario used the most in exercises is an attack from an armored division with air support from borders ( like a moroccan attack for exemple grin )

, a conventional war , so first step of the exercise is to stop the ennemy in the defensif lines in borders ( pics you r talking about) ,
wait for reinforcements , destroy the attack then launch a large scale counter attack go and destroy ennemy in deep of his territory

Morroco would be nuts to attack you. You should now stop buying equipment, I think you now have more than enough. Same goes for Egypt grin

Su25

Single role, ground attack.

We cannot afford an aircraft that has only one role. We tried to purchase upgraded SU-25 in 2015, however 6 units at a cost of 600 million, although with 6 more units of armed Super-Puma's was just too much.

The Tucano might be problematic, but it is the absolute best option we have, especially when you take into account the huge amount of combat missions and pilot training.

We could forget about the US and buy from Brazil. After all we are expecting 3 units from Brazil.

well, morocco have this days a starting revolution in the east Rif region with ten thousands who protest daily , their king can try to divert attention by trying to play with algeria , He always use this trick in the diplomatic side the big bad wolf of algeria daily in their news paper grin , maybe he will try a small military attack then quickly go cry to france et NATO , So this kind of exercise is also a message to Morocco to not try the devil and that algeria will respond imediatly before france and NATO come to help

and for military you are lucky to have a region with no super powers in front of you , when you see geopolitics of north africa its normal to spend more for its security

everyone here loves the yt vids of ISIS,Syria,BH and Al Shabab. I've always said when rounds are flying there's so much happening carefully selected cherry picked 3 mn vids can't capture the sheer chaos of battle. The noise, comical confusion confusion and sheer terror of real combat is often overwhelming and impossible to record until a means of 360 degree, close up of the entire battle field can be recorded.
Here's an excerpt of a SWAPO ambush of a motorised Koevoet platoon in Namibia from the autobiography of a SADF doc. If you'd seen a vid of this incident, you wouldn't know SADF conclusively won the war and never lost a battle.

A voice yelled 'contact' and pandemonium broke lose. I did not know it at the time, but the initial retort had been the sound of an exploding mortar. We had been caught completely by surprise in an exposed position and our driver immediately proceeded to make matters worse, pulling up alongside the by now stricken Casspir.
Men were abandoning Charlie, failing over one another in their panic. The back doors of our vehicle were opened and they scrambled on board. We already had our full quota and in no time our interior became jammed with yelling, jostling buddies, whose tenuous hold on discipline had instantaneously vanished in their moment of terror.

Things were happening too quickly and the sense of surprise [46] had been so complete that the captain had not yet taken charge. The driver of our vehicle further compounded the gravity of our situation by not waiting for orders and racing away into the centre of the kraal, where he promptly and inexplicably stopped.

Suddenly, I felt the impact of something slamming into my back. My first reaction was to think I had been hit. ..... put out an exploratory hand to feel what was happening. The man behind me had his rifle on automatic firing and the empty, ejecting shells were the culprits.

For the sounds of battle had an intensity that transcended anything a movie theatre or television set could have offered. The noise was overwhelming and communication with someone whose face was inches from mine became impossible. I saw men yelling and screaming and knew they were doing this by the shape of their mouths, their gesticulations and the look in their eyes, but I did not hear a word. Everything was drowned in a cacophony of automatic rifles, machine guns, exploding incoming mortars, shearing metal and howling engines.

Then wounded-and mortars!!

Our presence had been detected by SWAPO's mortar man, and the increasing noise of incoming fire told me he was quickly finding his range.

There was no support because:
It was Sunday and we were told the pilots were in church!

Some were just overwhelmed,even officers:
The elder of the two warrant officers had been overwhelmed by fear. Instead of joining the fray he had plugged his ears with balls of wax, the kind used on firing ranges to block out the noise, and thereafter strapped himself into his seat. How he came to have the wax so readily available was something of a mystery, but I did not have the heart to ask him. He had sat immobile throughout the battle and had to be told when the fighting was over. Only then would he leave the confines of his Casspir.

Real war, nairalanders! Its nowhere as clean and organised as yt,documentaries, autobiographies and forums would have us believe.
