Remember how I said I had an interview today?

Well let me rant about it small

This is the weirdest interview I've ever been to. And it's the one I prepared most for

So interview was for 10am and I applied for the position of an executive secretary in a construction company

I got there by 9.30am, greeted the front desk officer, and the other ladies who also came for the interview. Less than 5mins later, they call 3 of us into a room where someone who I assume to be the oga was sitting. There was a long sofa in the office, and he asked 3 of us to sit down and hand over 2 copies of our curriculum vitae each.

He looks at me and the conversation goes thus

Interviewer - what's your name

Me - my name is jazzyjazz

Interviewer - are you married?

Me - yes sir

Interviewer - when was your wedding?

Me - April 2016

Interviewer - Tell me about your former places of work and why you left them. I see you have worked in quite a few places
Me - I proceed to talk about the jobs and my responsibilities and why I left them. I mention that I left job 1 because I was no longer a Corper and it was a job for a Corp member only. Job 2 was because the company relocated to Lagos. Job 3 was because the job schedule was no longer suitable as I was a newly wed and working night shift 4 - 5 times a week. Job 4 was because of distance, I was living in Abuja and working in masaka.

Interviewer - do you have any kids?

Me - yes sir

Interviewer - how old is your child?

Me - 5 months old

Interviewer - where's your baby now?

Me - at home with a nanny

Interviewer - you're a nursing mother. Why do you want to leave your tender baby at home and go to work?

Me - well sir, one must find a way to strike a balance between the work and home. And given the present state of the economy, one needs to earn a living

Interview - (smiling) what does your husband do?

Me - he's a legal practitioner

Interviewer - where?

Me - in maitama

Interviewer - is your husband in support of you going back to work?

Me - yes sir

Interviewer - okay, (scribbles something on my Cv), you can go, we will give you a call


Right now I'm still asking myself if that was an interview or a quest into my family

I haven't gone for any interview in a while but I remember being asked some 'family-related' questions in the last interview i went for a few months after my wedding. I found some of them unnecessary, but a HR friend of mine later explained to me that they just want to be sure that you can be able to balance your home affairs (being a newly wed or a mum) without issues affecting your productivity.
They also asked me some questions about why i left my previous places of work which i think is normal (I have been asked that in every interview i have gone for)

My issue with your interview is just the fact that the discussion was with other applicants in the room. It should have been a 1-on-1 between the employers and You.
