Puerto Rico To Become 51st U.S State If Approved By US Congress by Godson222: 11:03am On Jun 12, 2017
Puerto Rico’s plebiscite on Sunday showed overwhelming support by Citizens for Puerto Rico to become a U.S. State.

A referendum website own by the government, Puerto Rico’s fifth since 1967, showed that 97 percent of nearly 485,000 voted in favor of Puerto Rico to become the 51st state of the US.

Even though the country is still counting votes and the expected outcome would not change Puerto Rico’s shift as a U.S. territory, the move still requires an act of the U.S. Congress.

Congress, the only body that can approve new states, will ultimately decide whether the status of the US commonwealth changes.

For Puerto Rico to become a US state, Congress would need to pass a statute laying out the transition process. If Congress does not pass a statute, Puerto Rico’s status will remain as it is.

About The Island.

The island has a 45-percent poverty rate, $70 billion in debt, woefully underperforming schools, and near-insolvent pension and health systems.

The Plebiscite

Ricardo Rossello, Puerto Rico's Governor, campaigned for the island’s 2.2 million eligible voters to select statehood as a way to boost future growth for the struggling island.

However the Governor made it known that if they are to become US state, they will have equal rights with other U.S. citizens.

Puerto Ricans who voted for US statehood in a non-binding referendum Sunday are "claiming our equal rights as American citizens," Puerto Rico's governor says.

Puerto Ricans have three options in the plebiscite: becoming a U.S. state; remaining a territory; or becoming an independent nation.

“I voted for statehood,” Armando Abreu, a 74-year-old retiree, said after voting at the Escuela Gabriela Mistral. “Even if it’s still a long way off in the distance, it’s our only hope."

The opposition parties called for a boycott of what they called a "rigged" process in part over the ballot language.

Do you have a referendum clause in your constitution? As you can see here, the Puerto Rican voted in a referendum to decide their faith. Every sane country have that clause in their constitution where citizens decide once in a while about their problems but here, the so-called educated ones are always mum about such an important omission from the useless constitution we have

Puerto Rico is a backward country. Spanish is the official language over there but they also speak English. The country is under developed and they lack steady power supply.

Your entire poverty ridden lineage can't do a damn thing to me. I was working in Pretoria, SA and spent time in Germany and Nigeria while hunger and mosquitos are doing a job on you. Human garbage.
