Na only this one surprise me.

In the U. S people don't smoke inside the bars. They step outside to smoke which should be the right thing to do except the bar is an open air bar. You don't want to smoke and disturb other people because ure not the only person in the bar. To enforce it they don't need to arrest anybody. Just enforce bars put no smoking signs in the sitting areas and entrance and close down bars that don't comply. The bars will enforce it themselves.

In a communiqué, the ministry said according to Section 9 of the Nigeria Tobacco Control Act 2015, once convicted, offenders are liable to a fine of at least N50, 000 and/or six months’ imprisonment.


Tagged the Clean Air Campaign, the ministry said the law would henceforth be taken seriously in a bid to protect and promote the citizens’ right to health, life, physical integrity and safety.


To carry out the campaign successfully, the ministry also said it was being supported by the Cancer Society of Nigeria, World Health Organisation, ONE Campaign, Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, Civil Society Organisations and the Tobacco Free Kids based in Washington DC, United States.


Public places where smoking is prohibited by law in Nigeria include:


- child care facilities


- educational facilities


- health care facilities


- playgrounds/amusement parks





- public parks (gardens)


- stadia


- restaurants/bars


- public transportation parks and


- Plazas.


“The Federal Ministry of Health is committed to the fight to ensure a tobacco-free Nigeria, and will in the weeks and months ahead actively collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure enforcement of the Act, and with the National Assembly to ensure that necessary supporting regulation is passed.”

This is a welcome development. I'm not against smoking /smokers but since we have non-smokers around, it makes much sense to have designated smoking places. In the case of a bar, a smoking room is usually allocated to smoking so non-smokers can be comfortable. Nigeria will be better healthier in the later years if this is enforced. Let's care for the environment.

So many ignorant posts here. Your choice to endanger your health by smoking does not supercede that of nonsmokers. You should respect their rights and their healthy choices. The polite thing to do when you're around people who you are not sure if they smoke, is to ask if they don't mind if you light up. That's how to be civil. But Naija smokers, no way. That's how some dudes started smoking while on an ATM queue. Such crass behavior. Yet they want Nigeria to be like foreign countries. Who are the real hypocrites?
