Olusola Fabiyi, Abuja

The Department of State Services has warned groups including northern youths and the Niger Delta militants against hate speeches.

The DSS, which stated this in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Mr. Tony Opuiyo, in Abuja on Sunday, said it had observed how some Nigerians had been preaching hate in the last few weeks.

The DSS spokesperson described the trend as disturbing and warned those he called desperate and mischievous elements, to stop in their attempt to steer the ship of Nigeria to calamity and irretrievable destruction.

He also warned all those it said were charting the course of disunity among Nigerians to desist from their divisive actions.

Recently, a coalition of some Arewa youth groups had in a press statement called for the relocation of the Igbo from the North.

More than 10 days after the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, ordered their arrest, none of the security agencies had made attempt at apprehending them.

But Opuiyo regretted that the action of the Arewa youths had been followed by a release from an unknown source styled, the Niger Delta Watchdogs, threatening all northerners to quit the Niger-Delta region as well.

He said that another group went to the extent of harvesting from the Internet, a horrific accident scene, for the purpose of making it look like a site of massacre of Igbo by northern youths.

He, however, said that the “service has been able to establish that the purported murder scene being depicted as a field of massacre was a high casualty accident scene which occurred along the Owo-Akure Road, Ondo State, on March 3, 2016.

“Those involved in these misleading and despicable acts have since been warned to desist from anything capable of causing disaffection and stoking nationwide tensions.”

Consequently, he said that the service, in line with its statutory mandate of ensuring the internal security of the country, would stop at nothing to deploy all resources at its disposal to identify and deal with all those culpable, as well as maintain peace and order in the country.

“To this effect, all those who are charting the course of disunity among Nigerians must desist from their divisive actions,” he warned.

He added, “The service is also not oblivious of the efforts of some miscreants to ignite fear and cause ethnic tensions across the country.

“It strongly condemns in its entirety the call for relocation of anyone to places against their wishes. Such relocation order is not only illegal, but it is strongly viewed to be against the spirit of our constitution which allows for freedom of movement and association among others.”

Opuiyo said that the DSS also frowned on the tendency which he said some ethnic chauvinists easily and cheaply resort to in order to achieve their devilish aims.

For example, he said some of them resort to hate speeches, misinformation and total manipulation of information especially on the social media to fan the embers of discord and subvert the efforts of government in implementing its policies for the good of everyone.

He called on well-meaning and law-abiding citizens and residents to disregard persuasions by those he described as ethnic jingoists to make the country a theatre of the absurd and bloodletting.

Rather, he said it was time for Nigerians to show their humanity and patriotism which he said had been their defining strength as one united indivisible nation.

He added that the service had “already commenced investigation to get the perpetrators of these hate campaigners as well as their sponsors.

“At the appropriate time all those involved in these condemnable acts will be unmasked and decisively dealt with in line with the laws of the land.”

He added that the service “would not leave any stone unturned to ensure that those who are bent on causing a breakdown of law and order are not spared.”

The DSS spokesperson called on anyone with useful information on how to get those behind the hate speeches to volunteer same to the “service or the nearest security agency/formation for prompt action.”

DSS could have arrested the arewa youth that signed the ultimatum

That could have sent a warning signal to other tyrants and terrorist organization like Igbos miscreants

But alas they are telling Nigerians that their are sacred cows

There's nothing the DSS can do against the northern youths or the Niger Delta Militants. Those are just empty threats. Our security forces are usually afraid of those who are armed and ready for battle. They would rather flex power against unarmed people.

Cowards.

I don't think this DSS is a serious security agency. They refused to arrest the Arewa youths that signed that ultimatum given to the Igbos but now choose to start warning people because Niger Delta militants are now issuing a counter ultimatum?
What kind of partiality is this eh?
Anyways what do I know... When some Nigerians are busy saying they will re-elect a sick man in a wheel chair as president in 2019... These are the kind of things we will keep seeing...

You have spoken well bros. The arewa youth leader and his notorious gang should have been arrested to correct the madness of other grps agitating (like IPOB) useless secession hence throwing confusion in the country.

But to be honest, DSS are now confused. This country sef undecided

First, i am not happy with the level of sensational journalism by the press - PunchNg. So now it has to do with group of Northerns, they deem it fit to use the phrase "Arewa Youths" but when it involves group of south- southern, they then tagged them "Niger Delta Watchdogs". Punch is a disgrace to the media. Sahara Reporters wont be this sensational. That been said. Lets go to the issue at ground..

I am actually ashamed of the DSS. The Dss i hoped for in this present administration i helped brought to power was one without Bias. However this has not been the case. I do like to ask why is it each time there is an issue between the north and the south, people of the south always bare the pain of harassment from security agencies, yet nothing happens to the killers up north?. There is always a one-sided arrest, detention and prosecution. The DSS doesn't seem to know it but they are one of the agencies that beat the drum of separation loud and clear. They (DSS) reacts excessively and aggressively to South East and South South groups while, on the flip side, turn blind eye to the apparent breach of laws by Northern groups, like the group that openly defied the constitutional right of Nigerians to live freely wherever they want in Nigeria, and gave Igbos October 1 deadline to live Northern Nigeria. Why didn't DSS move against the group? What of Fulani herdsmen who kill and roam free?

Two laws! One for arewa the other for the rest of us including some hallucinating AFONJAs . Some Yorubas think the same law for arewa is for them but recent revelation said the contrary when Yorubas defended themselves on their own turf against Hausa Fulani ile ife, at the end, lives and properties were lost from both sides but The aggressors were left off the hook while the victims were arrested including an "OBA" who just got bail after two months in "cell" don't forget what happened in Lagos by the same people against the same Yorubas aided by police. Shine ur eyes! The sufferphisticated ones.

These things (DSS flagrant bias against Southerners) plays deep into the minds of South East and South South Youths. DSS is the best recruiting tool for Southern separatist groups.

It has to come to an end. Where is the president, he need to call his uncle or brother or whatever he is to Order!.

Since I came back from my ban, I've been having difficulties contributing to the forum because it seems it has been completely overrun by idiotic kids who know nothing but to insult people and more often than not, your mods tend to look the other way. People create all manner of threads just to spite other people's tribes and those threads are left standing.

Veterans who've made great sacrifices in terms of time and money (data) to bring this forum this far are fed up with this nonsense, preferring, or forced to, observe the daily piggy wrestling from a distance.

All that nonsense was my reason for making the comment i made the last time, and guess what, I WAS BANNED FOR IT!!

What a shameless service! They only find their voice and make threat only when it involves Southerners. Arewa youths & one irresponsible old man made treasonable statements and circulated it both in the print and electronic media, with their names & signatures appended to it, yet up till this very moment, they are still walking free and making more inciting statements, but this so called DSS suddenly found their voice because another group from the South made a counter threat! Even the fulani terrorists disguised as herdsmen are still going about the length and bridth of the ZOO commiting mass murders, rapes and destruction of properties of innocent people, and non of them have been arrested. Is Nigeria a country? No country is run this way except failed banana republics!!!
