For your question, pidgin is very understandable by a lot of people, but the preferred language spoken in Yorubaland is still Yoruba. Even in Lagos, Yoruba speak Yoruba to other Yorubas. I think Yoruba in a way is a lingua franca in Lagos alongside Pidgin with many ethnicities picking up the language.

Holly i think we are saying the same thing. New languages evolve from older ones as history has shown, some from a reformation and some from combinations of old languages and may assume a new identity of their own.

If pidgin evolves into a new language, it would be a Germanic language with a Germanic structure just like English. Meanwhile Swahili is a Bantu language with a Bantu structure. I hope you got me.
