Iveco is aggressively trying to enter the kenyan commercial vehicles market, even opening an assembly plant in Mombasalink http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/corporate/Iveco-returns-to-Kenya-market/539550-3860726-2hrma9/index.html

That must be the source. With our fixation on fire delivery platforms we often forget small logistics vehicles of this type are just as important as Merk 4s or Cobra gunships.

SAAF GRIPENS BROUGHT OUT OF ROTATIONAL STORAGE

www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/paris-south-african-air-force-boosts-gripen-availab-438456/

"Previous low availability of South African Air Force (SAAF) Saab Gripen C/Ds has been overcome by bringing stored aircraft back into service, says Lt Col Josias Mashaba, commanding officer of the service's 2 Sqn.
...
South Africa has 19 single-seat Gripen fighters and nine two-seat D-model examples, most of which are operated by 2 Sqn at Waterkloof air base. At least 12 of the aircraft were put into long-term storage in 2013 because of severe budget cuts.
...
"Every country has its ups and downs and has budget cuts," Mashaba notes. "We have overcome them and we basically have all our Gripens up and running"
...

South African Gripens are introducing an indigenous datalink called "Link ZA", which allows data sharing with the nation's BAE Systems Hawk 120 lead-in fighter trainers. "We 'Gripenised' the Hawk," says Mashaba. "When you are flying the Hawk, you are able to see the Gripens around you. The stepping stone from Gripen to Hawk is actually much easier."

Correction in that article. 2 Squadron is at Makhado, not Waterkloof.

After years and years of denials by the resident South-Africans in this thread, it turns out that 12 Gripen fighters have indeed been in long-term storage.

Talk about a dog going back to it's faeces.

Quite similar to a dog going back to it's feaces.

12 Gripens were in rotational storage. You are the one (including your friend the time Agaugust) who said the Gripens were put in permanent deep freeze storage, never to be seen again. Airframes were rotated. This article simply states that those airframes will be brought back to constant operational duty. No one ever denied rotational storage f0.0l. This is what Darren Olivier says, look at his language used. One of SA's most clued up defence experts. Not some Frenchie reporter who doesn't know the difference between Makhado and Waterkloof.

By the way, how is your fake aircraft manufacturing plant coming along?

You and Flight Global still have it wrong. Rotational storage is not long-term storage.

Speaking of dogs, they bark whilst the caravan moves on!

Mashaba also outlines a unique role for South Africa’s Gripens in combating rhinoceros poaching grin grin grin grin grin. This one is just sad!!

If submarines can chase away sharks from tourist in South-African beaches, i guess Gripens can be used to hunt Rhino poachers. grin grin grin

Even more sad is that you leave out the rest of the paragraph grin grin grin grin. Shame this article has really hit you deep.

"There are cheaper aircraft to use than Gripens for such an application, he adds, but anti-poaching surveillance is usually combined with other tasks".

SAAF has been flying along the Zim, Mozambique, Botswana border almost as long as the SAAF has had aircraft. Which other tasks do you think he's talking about? So why not turn on your recon pods when you're over Kruger National Park? NAF doesn't patrole its borders? You first rely on VICE News or BBC to let you know there's a problem?

What's sad about a peace-time air force using its targeting recon pods to conduct night-time air patrols in the nearby parks? Or should we follow your example of peace-time collapse so we're caught with our trousers around our ankles?

Being a pilot is cool until uncle SAM knocks you off the air behind enemy lines and you have nothing beyond a pistol and map to get you out of your screwed up situation.... That moment you're a lone Recce with a battalion of enemy soldiers hunting you down. You'll be praying "God if I make it out of here, I'll go to church every Sunday - I swear". grin

You just punched him in the throat. I don't think the NAF even knew what Sambisa Forest looked like from the air until CNN started reporting on Boko Haram.

Denel Land Systems is in the process of executing an Armscor contract that will lead to an upgrade of the South African Army’s G6s to address obsolescence.

In addition, Denel Land Systems is in the process of qualifying a new Laying and Navigation system for the SA Army that will incorporate the latest computing systems and inertial navigation mechanisms. The new system integrates seamlessly with the SA Army Artillery Target Acquisition and Tracking system, and will speed up the ability to navigate and fire accurately, Denel Land Systems said.

This system will be deployed on the SA Army G5s, G6s and Bateleur Multiple Launch Rocket Systems. The development and qualification of both projects will last about another year before the system is delivered

Been saying this for ages.

If you play your cards right, by building just one plant you could domestically produce

- Transport trucks
- MRAP's
- Command Vehicles
- Ambulances

Having your entire wheeled fleet based off of 2 chassis (4X4 and 6X6) and maybe two engines would result in HUUUGE long term savings. It would also mean that you get more "bang for your buck" as any plant would remain open for longer

further, other government services could get
- ambulances
- mobile clinincs
- prisoner transports
- fire-engines
- school busses

And there are of course civilian sales.

If played right, one project could form the umbrella for a 15-30 year production cycle.
