I hope this move makes the South African government feel threatened, then plans get put in place to acquire Gripen E. One can only dream.

They are only getting around 6-8 Gripen C/D....also we have pretty good relations with Botswana, would be fvcking awesome having bilateral exercises with them once they receive their Gripen.

Wouldn't say the Dakota's are good thing....they need replacing!!

True, but my point is you've gotten more out of those original 50 or so airframes than even the designer ever imagined. Who ever operated customised turbo Dakota's transports like you guys or MPAs ? In Kenya we had 3 or so civvy DC 3s that operated the daily Mara circuit til maybe a decade ago. How you not only kept those assets airworthy but added more frames especially amidst sanctions is an inspiring story that show's monet isn't the only issue:passion, true dedication counts.

I wouldn't say vanity project, more skills retaining project. Many of the engineers who were involved in Rooivalk development and other projects are reaching retirement age. I think Denel is looking for its next big project that will involve hundreds of engineers, technicians etc etc and covering it up as a viable economic possibility. Who knows maybe it will be a commercial success.

Hmmmm. That makes sense. On one level you need civilian products but you must have noticed everyone is developing a Tucano type attack plane now flown all over the ME and now Africa . Now, I know Paramount has the Mwari but why didn't Denel consider a twin turbo OV 10 type? That would BREAK SALES RECORDS! ! I think they had the resources to but the rights for the Argie Pucara and upgrade accordingly for a larger payload.
Imo,that would have been the IDEAL NEXT BIG PROJECT .

Even if Botswana bought a squadron worth of F35s, our politicians would pretend like they didn't see them. I have a feeling we won't be buying anything flying for the next 30 years until those Gripens start falling off the sky... Even then it's gonna be a hard sell to the public why we need fighters.... South Africans, like the Swiss have has too much say on defence related matters. Our open national budget is our worse enemy, we need a black budget like the US where such things are procured and keep the very opinionated media out of it.

just musing......

45km inside of border ,

hmmm interesting

that is deep inside hostile territory, mission must have been successful grin

.....anyways its a Czech drone

just for info

it was Iran who conducted reconnaissance via their fighters to photograph Iraqi nuclear reactor etc and provided the photos to the mossad / Israeli air force who used it to successful destroy Iraqi nuclear plant.

earlier Israeli attempt was not so successful ,which prompted Iran to step in despite Iran being anti Israel.

Iranian UAVs r having a very bad day, 2 similar uavs shot down in Syria too grin grin

Damn a UAV shot at over 45km. I'm just curious with RCS and achieving a kill from such distance.

not sure but i think u got it upside down

i meant the drone was already 45km inside p********** when it was claimed to be shot down

in my business it means the drone collected substantive amount of info and relayed it back before going down.
its targets was ingress and egress points and logistic footprints of targets for localized operations on their part.

iran has been provided high resolution sat pics on demand

apologies if i misinterpreted u.

anyways for a plane to kill a uav is relatively easy at any distance provided ur selection of weapons is appropriate
most of the time UAV operators r unaware of detection , so easy to surprise it

Oh, I grab now. 45km deep is something huge enough but let look at it at this way,
Will you put in sensitive infrastructures within 45km of your enemy?

It probably got some information but I won't put a very sensitive infrastructure 45km of my foes or potential foes.

logically it is correct

but u applied it in the wrong context so it becomes incorrect

1. very sensitive infrastructure r never close to border ,there maybe exceptions but in that case enough countermeasures r implemented against any possible threat.

2.very sensitive static infrastructure r best and safely viewed from space .friendly countries provides it to Iran as per demand.

3.the Iranians most probably were in the hunt of localized targets (positive identification/location) in the SOE. they r most probably trying to sanitize their border based on specific HUMIT and other intelligence sources through real time surveillance.

4.connect it with recent events, attack on Iranian parliament, thousands of pa******* crossover illegally to work in iran or join ISIS or Europe.
it poses a security risk given strong presence of ISIS in p******* /afg*******.

5.saudi pressure on p********* to join anti syria/iran faction . iranian intel orgs will be on high alert due to porus nature of p****** and iran border.

hope it clarifies ur doubts

actually iranian kurds from the suuni sect ,who were members of ISIS were involved in the attack.that drone was most probably monitoring Jundallah also known as People's Resistance Movement of Iran (PRMI),a Sunni terrorist group based in Pakistan ,Balochistan region.who have conducted terrorist attacks inside iran

In reality.

It isn't about backyard bombing but doctrine development, training, exercising etc.

Dropping bombs in the bush can never be compared to the NAF bombing targets with pin-point accuracy in a fully built up area in a combined assets deployment.

Like i said, show me operational efficiency, maybe then we can talk. cool cool

The NAF fought in built up areas.

Efficiency in your backyard?

The only invasion that could ever occurred could have been from Zim. So Zim is down and out then nothing will over occur.

My biggest concern with South Africa's defence affairs is the sensationalised media. I once read a main media article years ago banishing the purchase of the Badger. The reporter who obviously had no military background information went on about how many schools would have been built with the money.

As I said, the military should have a black budget and place things under the Secrecy Bill to stop journalists from snooping around on sensitive defence issues.
