my friend is a geologist, but his application was withdrawn when he had difficulty uploading his on demand video. The bad network he encountered didn't help matter at all.

I noticed the ''I am pleased'' ..... i was expecting We instead.

Maybe we are wrong, Time will tell.
the only success letter we're celebrating is being questioned because of "I" and "we". Nigerians sef.
The question is, why would the guy lie? To get what?

I am sorry if my comment offended.
I tend to pay attention to details and it affects my thinking process and the way I react to things.
It is just my personal observation, and it doesn't stop anyone from getting a regret or success mail.

I would employ the person who knows the Job base on previous experience. someone who can keep the ship afloat and ensure machinery availability and reliability at all times during his/her hitch.
You keep convoluting things. The argument here is that if both candidates have similar level of experience, exposure and both of them can do the job effectively. Who would you employ. A Graduate or an ND holder? Infact I feel this should be a rhetorical question cause the answer is a NO Brainer.

Make I shook mouth for wetin nor concern me small. grin

In REAL life, no two persons have the same level of experience at doing things, even if they have been serving for the same number of years. One would most certainly have an edge over the other and then there is working style/preferences to look at.

I no wan stress this issue. The argument here is SIMILAR experience not SAME. No two persons are the same.
I don't want to go back repeating the same points because someone has already done justice to that. Just answer the question. Infact no need to answer the question, cause as I said before it's a No brainer. But if you guys still have opposite opinion then that's cool. I think we can all just agree to disagree.

First, there is no disagreement here, we are just giving our opinions and it's similarly the reason why HRs across different org. recruit differently.

The argument from d question centers on "same KNOWLEDGE and relative experience". Forgive me if I am not hondastanding, cause if they both have the intellectual capacity to handle the job why then should the paper qualification be d deciding factor.

I'm just saying there are other things to look out for that would surely distinguish them.

I hereby agree to disagree on this mata cheesy

It is not a rhetorical question, rather a leading question, designed to lead one into emotions.
I am sorry, deepwater is not that emotional, I am real and practical.
I have only mentioned the person i would employ and why.
What you havent understood is that degree doesn't appeal to every employment more importantly for seafarers. The earlier you come to terms with reality the better.

I understand where you are driving to, I once had that conception but I have allowed reality to set in instead of emotions.

This issue may be strange to people not familiar to marine.

Go figure out requested documents for employment of seafarers and tell me where you see degree as an added advantage Or priority.

stop this rant about documents and certifications... No one says degree is a priority. A degree is an added advantage in any profession!

you can call a degree/ academic certifications paper qualification for entry level and prolly mid level jobs. As you progress in your career, those paper qualification complements your experience. Which would you employ? a CEO with Masters degree in engineering or a CEO with M.eng and an MBA from havard. The same applies with the chief engineer position. Whilst you can get into some industries without "paper qualifications" it's always good one complements with degree's a further academic studies.

On this issue, you have said nothing yet.
This is a perfect scenario of ignorance at bliss.
I was expecting you to know the difference between a sailing C.E (seafarer) and a technical manager - C.E

I have looked at your attached pics, the one from SP is for seafarers(hope you saw the emphasis on.diploma?) and one other talking about managerial role, I can even see 'construction site' on the other one. Would I have to remind you that our discuss is on seafarers? You need to be objective when trashing an issue.

You might have interacted with seafarers in past and on this occasion you are interacting with another qualified and thorough breed who is on time off and ready to clear you doubts as far as marine is concerned. This involves marine/offshore at full spread, drilling and well control inclusive. 100% practical not those books and Google stuff.

Your points and understanding of marine is shallow, hence anything i say would be total rant to you.

To engage me better on this, read up requirements for C.E (seafarers) as per STCW '95 convention as amended by manila 2010.

Once again, you have said nothing yet.

No one is saying your degree is needed. Different people with different life expectations. Is a CE not in the marine industry. Would you remain a sailor all you life or prefer to become a technical manager as you have highlighted in the post? and Why are there maritime universities? Madam, no one is saying you need a degree to get into the industry but in any case a degree remains an added advantage...just like the military or navy.
@ last bolded, no concrete information or relevance to this arguement. Just another redundant piece. I have said nothing yet because you do not understand my line of thought!
Just as you do not need a degree to become an OIM or rig manager. You can start from roustabout and then climb with different "documents a certifications" like IWCF but these days you find OIM an rig managers that are masters degree holders even with lesser years of experience... you cannot become a driller without IWCF but you can without without degree... a degree becomes an advantage. Do you understand now?? In your seagoing experience, have you not met a captain or CE that is a degree holder or even a 2nd or 3rd engineer that are degree holders? Stop this rants pls. Rather than tell me me read up, I will post a link for you here. This is for the same sailing CE.

who said the bolded?? I don't want to insult your intelligence. Pls re-read the post. I said the information does not relate to the argument. I debate not because I want to show knowledge, I debate to learn and that's why I put references. I read and downloaded STCW file. I have attached screenshots and I did not see anywhere they said a degree is NOT an advantage or a degree holder is not needed. Answer the question. In your claimed sea going experience, have you not met a chief officer for deck or a chief engineer for engine that are degree holder. In every profession at somelevel sometime there are always essential "E" and preferred "P" requirements and skills. That the point sister
For all of you that think it's derail, sorry. It's an opportunity for everyone to learn. No information is wasted. There won't be any special news other than invite for second stage. Until then, learn when there is an opportunity.
