What would you think Zuma and his Indian buddies would do if they had access to a "black budget" with zero oversight ?
Corruption has a far bigger influence over your live in SA (or any other African country) than war.

If there were less secrecy and more oversight when the arms deal happened ,we would have probably ended up with a better deal for the taxpayer and the SANDF. Lots of items on that shopping list came from greedy politicians smelling an easy buck and not necessarily from what the SANDF wanted or needed.

ActivateKruger:

The only invasion that could ever occurred could have been from Zim. So Zim is down and out then nothing will over occur.

My biggest concern with South Africa's defence affairs is the sensationalised media. I once read a main media article years ago banishing the purchase of the Badger. The reporter who obviously had no military background information went on about how many schools would have been built with the money.

As I said, the military should have a black budget and place things under the Secrecy Bill to stop journalists from snooping around on sensitive defence issues.

Most of those assets were needed and identified as per the pre-requisits of the SANDF

To my knowledge the only dubious acquisition, per requirements, was the Augusta. There is also some controversy over the Bazan 59B - with Mbeki (allegedly) personally intervening in favor of the MEKO... but the MEKO was the cheaper bid... soo... even if true... we going to get mad at Mbeki for saving us some money?

See the issue here is not oversight but senseless media reporting. Would South Africa ever buy the much needed strategic airlift? It won't happen because if we dared, CityPress and News24 will come up with fancy articles like "Zuma Buys Weapons" then students will be up burning things demanding they get free education.... During the days of the Arms Deal it was about arms vs health. We held countless high school debates why the government shouldn't be buying ARVs with the money, do you know why? Because guys at the Action Treatment Campaign made their won calculations and presented them to the media who had stories to sell and people were more concerned about dying of HIV than the aged military.

I already hate the fact that DoD is already underfunded, it gets only 25% of what the Education Department gets and already there were people calling for more money to be taken out of the Defence to add on free education. As I said before, those Gripens will be flying until they fall off the sky and no additional airframes will be bought and no replacement will be acquired under the public watch.

As for the corruption, well I'm not for it BUT it's hardly a uniquely African thing, the Americans are even more corrupt just study the whole lobby system and who financially backs congressman and all.... The difference is that they keep their media out of military issues.

sorry but when you see this south african technology on the Umbani precision-guided bomb kit for exemple , we dont need to ask more about accuracy , beside the fact that grippen have much better technology of bombing then an F7 or alpha jet

Dude, anybody can buy technology or a bomb kit. lt is not rocket science. NAF combat videos are available everywhere.

so you want south african air force to bomb an imaginary local insurgency to have nice videos of terrorist burned ? common ,

algeria for exemple have some terrorist and dont use its fixed wing air force against them only Mi 24 mk III , so i dont inderstand that you expect videos of south african grippen bombing operation in this peaceful country with no internal big insurgency or terrorists ,

and you think seriously that an alpha jet or F7 have better bombing capacity than a grippen with PS-05/A radar and Rafael/Zeiss Optronics LITENING III targeting pod + last guided bombs technology ? You exaggerate on this point wink

I agree with you on the need and utility of budget transparency. If people transgress with impunity now, one shudders if there were less transparency.

ActivateKruger probably forgets that we also have the Special Defence Account, which is not public and through which purchases for the Special Forces for example, are processed. Even this comes with a proviso: it is audited by the Office of the Auditor General and reports tabled in a closed session of the parliamentary committee on defence. Even then, the only completely secret items are those bought locally, as overseas sellers still have to declare what they export.

He knows this full well. SAAF has been capable of precision bombing for decades. 85 Combat Flying school is where SAAF fighter pilots cut their teeth in precision weapons deployment and air-air combat He is just playing dumb, out of I don't know....jealousy? Anger? Who knows.

There is nothing that the NAF is currently doing during operations that most peace time air forces around the world aren't doing during training. Boko Haram has no heavy air defences or aircraft, so NAF pilots are not under extreme pressure during their bombing runs. He knows this, but he decides to troll his own thread. Sad.

I think you'll enjoy this video. SAAF air-air combat training under high G's. Air-air is taught/trained in the Hawks before pilots recap their skills in the Gripen (for those who pass)

Operational efficiency, bombing targets with accuracy in a fully built up area.

I didn't ask you to start listing equipment. Take out operations in Nigeria, we have deployed to Cameroun, Chad, Mali and Gambia in recent years.

Just like the Mokopa missiles, the SAAF don't have any Al-tariq's in service.

I can also start listing in our disposal, CH-3A, MI-35M etc etc, but i didn't ask for these.

You cannot compare an Air Force bombing empty fields and running after Rhinos in the bush to the Nigerian Air Force.

All Air Forces conduct exercises, that's nothing new.

Unfortunately your argument is flawed. The SAAF cannot deploy what they don't have.

Bombing with accuracy in built up areas, and occasionally killing 100 civilians undecided undecided. So much for accuracy, target planning and operational efficiency. I stand corrected, but I don't think even the Americans in all their years of conflict have *accidentally* killed 100 people in one go.

One can only imagine all the other secret times NAF pilots have gone back to base, given the thumbs up. Meanwhile 10/15/20 innocent civilians lie dead. Or payloads which haven't landed anywhere near the target.

Anybody, that is... except NAF

The fact that we own and produce PGM's and NAF has exactly zero, with zero ability to deliver them, ends the discussion.

Yes, you cannot compare:

A. 4th Gen fighters with recon + taregting pods and PGM's

with

B. 3rd gen fighters with no recon or targetting pods or PGM's

You want to talk about operational efficicency? What about the time when, at the height of the war (and your spending spree), only 12% of your airforce was operational.

This is beyond childish

A dufus posted up there about NAF bomb on the IDP.

Now, let me tell you some story if you are finding it hard to comprehend.

After investigation, NAF claimed they received information from ground troops on approaching BHT then A-jets were deployed fast with no ISR platform.

The pilot was unable to ID people on ground him self. Now let me tell you, the USAF bombed civilians locations twice already with 4th Generation and 4+ aircrafts after the NAF incident.

NAF described the incident as unfortunate. So back to topic, you bringing up such point means you're a coward with zero point, it's like a guy posting his ex nudes because she broke up with him.

Mr, try an intelligent argument.

Damn ridiculous. Both airforce are filled with corruption.

The Nigerian military lacks leaders with foresight but thanks to the current CAS. However he needs to fast track things and I really adore his work on indigenous innovations.

It's very bad to go so low to the extent of making reference to an unfortunate accident during such arguments.

I don't care about his issues with Henry. Mine is to read and pass. Forget about this nationalism, we all know the truth. The fact remains the Nigerian airforce at her status deserves more than she is now but the blame goes to the corruption and lack of foresight.

-Alpha jets deployed fast with no ISR
-Pilot unable to identify people on the ground himself

Your ground troops would have told your pilots that BH spotted in this x and y location. Your airforce would have (or should have) known the location of that refugee camp. Chances are Nigerian military personnel had probably been to that camp before to offer assistance. The approaching BH was approaching in a stationary camp? Some serious juju.

So location of camp is known. Pilot sees the first thing that moves and drops his bombs, heads home. No reference maps, no asking for confirmation, no nothing. And this is the outfit with operational efficiency? Oh okay then smiley.

Don't ever compare NAF mistakes to USAF mistakes. In a different league. Anyways, I'm done with this topic.

KENYA SET TO ACQUIRE "NEW" LONGSWORD

Having seen its relationship with IOMAX disolve, Air Tractor has now partnered with L3 Technologies to take the AT802U to the next level. Counter-insurgency is the name of its game and the aircraft has now been rebranded as the AT802L LONGSWORD.

Fitted onto the hardpoints under both wings are a HELLFIRE precision attack missile, LAZU-19 rocket launchers capable of firing 2.75in laser guided rockets, 500lb GBU-12 laser guided bombs, and Dillon 30 calibre gunpods on both wings. While two Mk 82 500 lb general purpose bombs have been positioned on the two of the three centre pylons. Also fitted is a MX-15D HD EO/IR turret with laser designator.

Since being displayed at Marrakesh airshow in April 2016 in Morocco, the LONGSWORD has been upgraded with a new glass cockpit, certified by the FAA. Meanwhile the Thales SCORPION Helmet Mounted Display allows the pilot enhanced situational awareness by having a better field of view than the MX-15D can provide on the cockpit display. He or she can use the repeater to slave the HMD, while the WSO can zoom in or zoom out to verify the target. control of the system. The WSO’s rear seat cockpit has seen a 17in multifunction display integrated.

"We have also strengthened the wings, with production of the first ones already complete," Air Tractor President, Jim Hirsch, told the MONS. "This will extend the aircraft’s fatigue life to 11,700 hours – around 20 years – a considerable enhancement compared to the previous version."

L3’s Pat Penland, VP Transport Programs, added: “The new wings will be a feature of the next production aircraft that are destined for the Kenyan Air Force. We expect to complete the contract formalities within months. They are keen because they fulfil a need they desperately want.”

The Kenyan Air Force is set to acquire 12 armed LONGSWORDs and two Air Tractor AT 504s, a smaller version of the AT802L with a side by side cockpit, which will be used for training. The first set could be delivered within 18 months.

"We have also upgraded the rear cockpit with a 17in display and new stronger wings are being built. First set would be delivered in 18 months, but if they wanted them earlier we can provide the combat capability sooner. A, L3 ForceX Widow mission management system has been added, similar to a US special mission configuration," James Wise, an ex-AC-130 pilot now working for L3, told MONS. "This allows the LONGSWORD to be even better equipped to confront pirates, smugglers and terrorists."

“We are integrating a three-axis digital autopilot, which will be fully certifiable by late-August. It provides more stability in the air, over the original aircraft with a analogue autopilot," Penland concludes. link http://www.monch.com/mpg/news/11-air/1733-longsword.html
