US declares support for Nigeria's unity as tension continues over Biafra

Author: Eromosele Ebhomele

- The United States ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Stuart Symington, spoke when he paid a visit to Governor Abiola Ajimobi in Ibadan

- Mr Symington said the United States was interested in Nigeria and this was why he was visiting states within the country

The United States of America has spoken about Nigeria as the latter continues to battle with agitations from the south-eastern part of the country for secession.

According to the US ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Stuart Symington, the foreign country and one of the world powers would continue to support Nigeria’s unity.

Symington said his country will continue to work towards the promotion of unity in Nigeria.

Symington said the US is interested in Nigeria's unity
He described Nigeria as the strength of the world’s most populous black nation.

Vanguard reported that the ambassador made this known when he led top officials of the embassy on a working visit to the office of the governor of Oyo state, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, in Ibadan.

The envoy said that the US recognizes the strategic importance of Nigeria in Africa, adding that his visit was in the furtherance of his country’s mission to explore new frontiers of partnership for development with African countries.

This is why, he said, he was touring every part of the Nigeria.

He urged the government of Ajimobi to work with the US towards setting a new pace in socio-economic development.

“This visit is not just a courtesy call; It is in continuation of America’s vision and mission. We are looking forward to working with your state to set up a new pace in development.

“We are happy to be here and I’m telling you that Nigeria as a country is loved by all Americans and even in the world for the sake of the unity the country uphold,” he said.

NAIJ.com learnt that Ajimobi, while speaking earlier, sought the assistance of the US government in his administration’s efforts to promote human capital development and technical education in the state.

The governor noted that technical education was the missing link in the country’s curriculum.

He said technical education was necessary for the country’s accelerated development.

Meanwhile, despite the hues and cries that greeted the three months quit notice given to Igbos by Arewa Youth Consultatives Forum (AYCF), a Coalition of Northern Youths has written a letter to the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, begging him to allow Ndigbo to go and have their Biafra Republic.

In a statement sent to NAIJ.com, a Facebook user, Yazid Ahmed said the group lauded the peace and conflict resolution moves being done by the Acting President, but noted that it doubted the efficacy of it in bringing a lasting solution to the problem in question rocking the nation at present.

UK Declares Support For Osinbajo Over Nigeria’s Unity

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has received plaudits from the United Kingdom through its Nigerian high commission. The UK said it supports Osinbajo’s efforts at stemming the threatening calls for the dismemberment of the Nigerian federation.

Joe Abuku, the British High Commission’s Media Officer, in a statement on Wednesday said, “We commend and support the Acting President and all those who have opposed these statements”.

“All Nigerians are entitled to live wherever they want in Nigeria, and we support that right unequivocally.

“Statements calling for the forced removal of one group or another to another part of Nigeria are dangerous and irresponsible.

“We call for calm and for reconciliation between the many ethnic groups and communities that make up and contribute to the strength and diversity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement further stated.

USA are about the biggest hypocrites, when have you ever seen them engage in a selfless act? it's always about them

The same people that preach about a free world, but see nothing in invading other countries where they find oil.

The same people that sound the human rights alarm yet have arguably committed the gravest cases of human rights atrocities since the UN's inception.

The same country that'll sabotage you if you refuse to work with them like how they did with Saddam Hussein and blamed the million deaths on his head

The same country that is built upon millions of deaths of it's original people, the Native Americans.

If Nigeria is going to be united, USA should shut the f--k up and stop pretending to care

“The strength of Nigeria is not in her money or oil but her greatest asset remains her well-endowed and resourceful people,” Arkwright said.

He said Britain would support Nigeria in the areas of education and business development.

He said, “We will strive to increase our market by encouraging more investments in Nigeria.”

You are the one fooling yourself. Trump government and obama ar two diff things. Obama turned out to be a devil in disguise and the dude nor really send Africa.

Anyways, the truth remains that biafra can never ever ever beat Nigeria at playing politics. These countries have a lot to gain at least for now if Nigeria stays together.

FG ready give out Ghana must go to frustrate kanu's plan. I dey tell you. Once britain is not on your side, then forget it because America will never join you. If yankee nor join you, then forget Israel. Today, China gains a lot from FG and once China nor join you then forget Russia. This is world politics. Who attends UN general meeting? Nigeria or biafra? Who will defend biafra there against anything FG tells UN? B fooling yourself there.

Na togo and Somalia go fight for biafra.

Three years of war left southeastern Nigeria in ruins. Estimates of the death toll range from one million to six million. After the Nigerian federal military government - supported by the UK - imposed blockades that made it difficult for aid groups to deliver food and relief supplies to Biafra, many children died of kwashiorkor, a severe form of malnutrition characterised by a distended abdomen.

Igwe Christopher Ejiofor, aide-de-camp to Ojukwu throughout the war, remembers carrying nearly dead children as he helped to manage relief services.

"I can't count the number of people I picked [up] who were at the point of starvation and death," he says. "And every time I took them to the hospital, they died and I [would go] back the next day [with more children]." Igwe Ejiofor is the traditional ruler of his community in the southeastern state of Enugu.
