From which material is the men upper cloth made of? Do some neighboring countries also wear it? And also let me show you the Afar people(they live largely in Ethiopia and in small number in Eritrea and Djibouti).

mtis: Your creepy music, your jeans and sneakers are not your ancestral culture. Sometimes you should be able to showcase and promote your african ancestral cultures and heritage! It is your original identity! How come Ugandans showcase and take pride in their cultures more than you Kenyans?? It is really a big discrepancy and embarrasment if you ask me. You guys have similar colonial histories. Where did the mix up come from? Or was it because all the whites & Indians were chased away from Uganda? Hence, making Ugandans more afro centric? Something tells me that you black kenyans are trying so hard to abandon your african cultures speedily in order to look western enough to be able to appeal to the whites & Indians in your midst and more settling foreigners. If that is the case, i am short of words at the level of inferiority. That of Ethiopia and other horn africans is understandable. Mainland Tanzanians do not really showcase their african cultural dance and attires in their music or social gatherings just like you Kenyans but their music has a very strong cultural flavour, so, they can pass. Where did this kind of wind of westernization come from upon Kenyans? Why only you guys? Cc Nairobiwalker, Jay254, TayserMahiri |

Nabhani: You see the reason why we say Swahili is like an arabic language? Gosshh! The amount of arabic words in the language are very much. The origin of the word is arabic FIT'NA. The word is also used in hausa language as 'FITINA' which has exactly the same meaning. Although, there are many other pure hausa synonyms. Whenever i hear swahili songs, i seem to be able to pick out some words which sound similar in Hausa language and when i check the meaning, it is usually the same. I have come across words like Hatari (Hatsari in hausa), Janaa (Aljanah in hausa), Duniya (hausa and swahili) and many more. Hausa language too has many arabic loan words but the original hausa words are still available and used interchangeably with the ones of arabic origin. Here is the meaning i came across when i googled the song. Exactly the same meaning in Hausa. Cc muafrika2, mtis, mtumsuper, Nairobiwalker, Taysermahiri, pissedyagami et al

Nowenuse: That's a lot to go into because it wasn't a simple "Arab" vs African thing as some historians like to paint it. The party that ousted the sultanate was Afro-Shirazi party which was made up of slave descendants, African migrants and Native Swahilis. When the British ruled Zanzibar they created a caste system that looked like Brits at the top followed by the Omani Arabs then Indians and native Africans at the bottom. So it easy to see why the native Africans supported the revolution but the Swahili didn't see themselves as "Africans" and their issue with the Omani Arabs was that they took most of their land. However, the Swahilis in the neighbouring island in Pemba (Unguja and Pemba make up Zanzibar) were on good terms with the Arabs and didn't have issue with them on their island so they didn't support the revolution for the most part. The Comorian community, Pemba Swahilis were more aligned with the Arabs but the Swahilis from Unguja weren't to fond of them thus the revolution occurred. Something which isn't told to often is that the Comorian community and Pemba people were also targeted when the revolution kicked off. 1 Like |

Nabhani: Okay thanks. West africa has the most beautiful and diverse cultural attires in africa. Nigeria alone can account for 3/4 of the various types of cultural attires in Africa. I have never really seen what original mainland Tanzanian culture looks like. Can you please show me? The only cultural TZ music i have come across was this one by Diamond and Khadijah kopa. But i guess it is swahili culture, isnt it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moE_dXt6-CQ Also, the culture in the song also looks very similar with Kenyan Sauti sol's Sura Yako. Is sura yako also a swahili culture song? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEJw64Zl28U |

Nabhani: Thank you so much for the enlightening piece. Nothing like info from the source. I also have many questions (please be patient with me). > Were Indians also chased out alongside the arabs? > How could the Unguja swahilis and native africans easily differentiate Pemba swahilis and Comorians? don't they so much look alike and have same cultures? > Were there also arabs in Pemba? If yes, i guess those ones were safe. > I also thought swahili people were highly interracially mixed and some looked more arab while others looked more african (or am i wrong?), if i am not wrong, then how were the British easily able to differentiate and classify swahilis who looked more arab from arabs? Or swahilis who looked more african from native africans? Since all of you speak the same language? > Do swahilis and all coastal swahilized arabs and native africans have the same culture? |

Fidha254: There is culture in Kenya, I don't think most people are debating that. If they are, then they aren't being very logical. By similar, then yes, there are three main language families in Nigeria. There are more language families than that if you include language isolates like the unclassified Cèntûm language, but we are talking about major language families. That small portion you hinted at is an area home to millions of people and diverse ethnic groups. Also, the people you are referencing aren't Nilotes either, even though they are Nilo-Saharan speakers as the map suggests. Nilo-Saharan is comprised of many groups of people which is mostly made up of Nilotic and Saharan speakers. The Saharan groups live in NE Nigeria. The largest being the Kanuri. Others include Kanembu, Tedda, and Dassa. Other Nilo-saharan groups that are neither Saharan nor Nilotic are the Zarma/Songhai in the Sokoto area. Here are the Saharan groups I'm talking about.

How you just going to flex on me like that? haha...I give you that but when it comes to the women.... au sio Mainland TZ culture I guess you will have to go the cities, I think people are leaving their traditional attire behind. I don't know... The Diamond and Khadija Kopa song is straight up coastal. Khadija Kopa is a popular Taarab singer from Zanzibar. The Sauti Sol song is also coastal flavoured. |

Nowenuse: -The Indians were targeted as well, any group that subjugated or mistreated Africans got dealt with. -To differentiate an Arab, a Swahili or native African wasn't as simple really, your ancestry meant everything not how you looked. Also there were is some cultural markers that was reserved for respected/wealthy individuals in society. -Today everyone that consider themselves Swahili has the same culture for the most part Look at the man sitting for example, he's wearing a embroidered turban and black overcoat, he also has a dagger, holding a sword and he's sitting on specially carved wooden chair which indicates some type of power. Now, is he Swahili or Arab? I have no idea. |

Hati13:The main fabric used in those clothing is ankara. They are part of modern Nigerian wear, they aren't necessary the most traditional wear and yes it's very common throughout West Africa and beyond. Other fabrics used in modern Nigerian fabric are lace and "native". These became part of the modern Nigerian attire. Also, I like those Afar wear. They are very light, probably because of the scorching sun. I've noticed the Afar wear differs from that of Amhara likewise the Amhara also differs from Oromo. The same reality is in Nigeria. Every ethnic group has its own wear, so the modern Nigerian is the blended and very modernized version of the original traditional clothing. By traditional, I'm talking about what people wore like 400 years ago before any modern adaptation. I see that in some of the Ethiopian posts, the same modernization is happening. For example, I can almost distinguish what is modern Ethiopian and what's ancient. |
