It is high time these Aba coblers that called themselves shoe makers, learnt to use good gum for making their wares. How does one buy a paire of shoes at 3000 naira, and still have to sew them? You can not even dance confidently with aba-made-shoes. Aba boys are great and talented, but should start using good gums for their shoes. 97 Likes |

Nonsense. These crybabies should see the new entrant as an opportunity to up their game. I thought they said Igbo people don't mind competition on their own turf, so why the lamentation?? They should look at the bright side and the benefits of such huge FDI into the state economy like up-to-date knowledge transfer, technology transfer, employment effects, improved IGR, amongst other spillover benefits. 53 Likes 2 Shares |

There's no doubt it will engender healthy competition between the indigenous manufacturers and the foreigners. Kudos to the abia government... 4 Likes |

Amazing rivalry.. "It is not fit for Governor Okezie Ikpeazu who is championing made-in-Aba products to shop for an investor from abroad who would be a huge beneficiary of his effort which is supposed to support local and indigenous production." - Would the shoes not be made-in-Aba? 11 Likes 1 Share |

The fears and reasoning of the traders are logical but it is not correct in practice. Take for example, when big white farmers came on board, such fears were entertained by the local farmers, however, it is crystal clear that with a large market like ours and so many factors that drag market share including product bias , no company can successfully run a complete monopoly in some goods, not even in services. There is this million dollar Shonghai farms and other large poultry farms with the Whites as principal partners, many thought their entrance into the market will stifle the subsistence farmers, but it didn't. Instead, the high yield technologies and systematic approach they came with are in the hands of the locals today, less cycle time, more turnover, disease resistant spp, improved vaccines, relatively cheaper broods, more accessible and better feeds manufactured by the bigger companies. Moreover, the meat market target of huge farms are the export and big enterprises like fastfoods and hotels, the frozen food chains which were hitherto controlled by Benin Republic. The local farmer retains his market and at a higher profit margin with the technology made available by the White farmers. Similarly, the shoe manufacturers will learn and get technology leaks (the painstaking works of many years) for free. The raw materials like high quality leathers, soles, gums, pins, packages and 'branding' will likely be manufactured here by the Chinese who I know will not like to be wasting cash on duty for things a few line of robots and machines will produce in minutes The people that will be affected are the importers of these items . Again the product preference, like many will not like meats believed to have gone through genetic modifications and steroid manipulations, many will have strong bias for robot made shoes as against handmade shoes. Till they come, the fears are coming too early! 35 Likes 3 Shares |

They shouldn't fret.... Instead they should sort out means of which the incoming transfer technology will be of benefit to their locals and indigenes. 1 Like |

The state government should not make aba another dumping ground for stupid investors. There are some sectors he should allow the indigenes man themselves and not spoil their businesses for them. |

You see our lives for gutter? All the rich igbo men could not invest in the aba boys by buying them quality and modern day shoe making equipment that will enable them make quality shoe. The evil politicians will just continue to steal money and refuse to use it for reasonable things. Now chinese man don come for china come set up better shoe making company. Meanwhile there's nothing special in the shoes the chinese company will make. Give the aba boys the same equipment and they'll perfect the shoes in terms of quality and finishing. 2 Likes |

Igbos and own goals. Same governor that was championing made in Aba product What happened to providing soft loans to the Aba boys? Or couldn't he have established an institute that would engage in research and development, training and capacity building for the young shoe-making entrepreneurs in Aba? Nnamdi Kanu and IPORK would not see anything wrong in this. Thank God it was not the FG that initiated such plan else we for don dey hear victimization wailing 4 Likes 1 Share
