Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, recently disclosed that Nigeria will begin to export Yam to other parts of the world beginning from today June 29th. According to Ogbeh, this will serve as possible means of economic diversification and also as a way of generating foreign exchange. These photos show some Tubers of yams being packaged ahead of their exportation to countries where they are needed. http://www.newshelmng.com/2017/06/photos-of-tubers-of-yam-being-packaged.html cc lalasticlala mynd44

This is interesting. I hope the farmers were given their full dues and were not shortchanged? God bless all operatives in the agricultural sector Modified: Some dolts and sad souls who will never have peace and joy in their lives till GEJ returns as president have been wailing uncontrollably over my statement. Like i replied one mature poster below, govt is already trying in that respect though there's still room for improvement. Its all about comparative advantage. I was in Okeho, Oyo state last year to meet the owner of the largest cassava farm in Nigeria because I'm going into it myself by the 3rd quarter of this year. The guy told my partner and I that they have a regular parley with Osinbajo and his team and they get support in their business. IITA (where i went for soil testing) and IART ibadan have beefed up their efforts in this regard. Of course there's room for improvement but how do you encourage young entrepreneurs to go into farming if they're not assured of profits that might match some white collar jobs their mates are doing? When folks see that agriculture is becoming profitable, it'll encourage more folks to go in and prices will crash eventually because of competition. My concern is for the farmers. They've been shortchanged long enough by middle men and govt. They deserve a better deal and as long as they get it, I'm very ok 3 Likes |

This is ridiculous and highly embarrassing especially when we know as Nigerians that we don't even have enough to eat let alone exporting this magnitude. The last time I checked, we even import garri from Togo to supplement our garri production for our teeming consumers domestically. What a Country ruled by clowns and jesters. 1 Like |

bolanto24:My brother I can tell you for free that Nigeria is under serious bewitchment as a result of this demonic APC-led government poor and anti people policies being peddled around. No single brain from the demonic cabinet to steer the ship of state to the promised land. Food are scarce already yet this he-goat is thinking of exporting? Who does that anywhere in the world? Definitely our style of economic policies defy reasonable and working logic. 1 Like |

This is what happened to cassava. Exporting to India (to make Indian garri and still sell it back here), China ( used mostly to substitute for materials used in printing money), and remaining one here, are being enncoraged by the local industries like bakery, biscuit factories and the like to use it as their local production, then demand sky rocketed now especially for garri and amala eaters. While most of the local famers now prefare to plant cassava used by industries, which mostly takes 6 months to grow and harvest because of the high demand while leaving those that are used for garri, which takes up to 1 year to harvest to few farmers. Why won't garri and cassava flours price sky rocketed rocket? No alternative, no encouragement? I wonder why federal government cannot invest massively thru mechanized famings to each senatorial district of the federation. At least there is a unique plant or crops both long term and short terms that will geminate massively and be useful both local and international, then we can talk of exporting. Why is it that difficult? Are there no thinking senators and ministers that can propose such? Even encourage local famers to do same and allow room for competitions. That is agricultural revolutions, at least we will achieve a lot there. Why can't they give it a try and deal with loopholes? Yam will soon be luxury, trust me. 1 Like |

In a way, it can help to increase local production but I must confess yam has really become too expensive in the market. Potato is now the better alternative to yam. 1 Like |

shukuokukobambi:I think this is where youths are really needs to wake up now. These crops will be gold soon, we need to invest massively to tap to . I was amazed when I visited a friend in Ogun state recently. He is a certified civil engineer and also an architect. He took.me to his farm and I was amazed on what I saw. We need more of that. But how many want to go into agriculture now? It is not competitive enough ,so the price will likely not come down. Remember that Fulani headsmen wahala is still there. Government needs to invest seriously in youths ,teaming up and going for agriculture, like creating avenue for mechanized farming. No varieties, no improvements, same old methods? America alone have over 10 specie of corns and around 100 species of apples because of mechanized farming. That is why food is so cheap. Why can't we start somewhere and let them encourage us too? I don't know. I just don't know. Besides, you will see that the place or farm you visited will be a raw material hub for some big companies and they might not even be meeting up their demands. 1 Like |

priceaction: You're very correct my brother. The Fulani herdsmen issue is where I finally broke with buhari. How can you be talking of agricultural revolution when farmers can't feel safe going to their farms? The guy I talked about earlier is a trained oil industry expert who abandoned oil for the bushes and considering what I saw there, it was the best decision he took. In fact the community is even feeling the blessings as he's building a police station for them. He assigned someone to take us round and even goes for consultancy in bayelsa. I'm glad about what you saw in Ogun state. I hope the enthusiasm is sustained and one of the ways is to ensure farmers get good prices for their goods. Govt needs to do more. Tractors etc are in short supply and young entrepreneurs need access to cheap loans and lands. Improved seedlings are now very available and we have govt to thank for that. Even the improved cassava stems are cheaper than ever now. This is the time to enter the fray bro. Pray for me 2 Likes |
