People Will Survive. Billions of people will die in the nuclear holocaust. We can expect over 500 million people to die immediately in the blast. Billions more will be killed by radiation, starve or freeze to death while they struggle in the new world. There’s every reason to believe, though, that a hardy handful of people will make it through. It won’t be a lot of people, but that’s a far more positive vision of the post-apocalyptic future than we used to have. In the 1980s, scientists were in a near-consensus that the whole planet would be wiped out. But today, we have a bit more faith that a few people will make it through. After 25 to 30 years or more, the clouds will clear, the temperatures will go back to normal, and life will be able to begin again. Plants will grow. They may not be as lush as before. But after a few decades, the world may even look like modern Chernobyl, where thick forests grow over the remains of a dead city. Life will go on, and people will rebuild. But the world will never again be the same. Lalasticlala, Mynd44 1 Share

alexistaiwo: That's what we believe, there can never be but keep updating and piling more nuclear ammunitions. Spending billions on them. You may be right, but we can never tell. All it takes is first to launch, we pray the trigger wont fall into a wrong hand someday or a crazy President. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Explorers: The Internet as you of all people should know is your friend. lovelygurl: Explorers: Pardon but do you know the procedures for launching the nuclear weapons. Please read up on it and update your teeming followers. A president can't just wake up tomorrow morning and launch the codes. Trump is presently only in possession of 20% of command necessary to launch the US nuclear weapons same is applicable to Putin (though his access to Russia nuclear toys is more flexible). That doesn't mean even Putin can launch nuclear weapons at his whims and caprices. The command codes are scattered amongst military and civilian personnel with the necessary security clearance to prevent terrorist kidnapping and forcing whoever is in charge of the code from causing a nuclear war. Imagine Trump being kidnapped and forced to nuke Russia. The aftermath is best left to the imagination. The Internet as you of all people should know is your friend. 4 Likes |

alexistaiwo:POTUS has a card, commonly called the "biscuit," with the nuclear launch codes on it. He also has a briefcase, nicknamed the "football," carried by amilitary aide who is never more than about 15 seconds away from the President, with the equipment and the information needed to launch a nuclear strike. The National Command Authority (NCA), POTUS with the consideration of the SecDef who must agree, can do the first step. Should the SecDef NOT agree POTUS can simply fire the SecDef on the spot and replace him through a pre-determined “line of succession” UNTIL he gets a SecDef that agrees with the decision. While possible not too probable because “tick-tock” the clock is running. Could the POTUS just command the military aide to pass the “football” and let the POTUSlaunch on his own authority? NO, because that would be an unlawful order that the military aide would not have to obey and without his compliance the “football” would not open so the POTUS’s “biscuit” would be nothing more than a plastic card. The military aide is thefirst line of defensein the process.Thesecond line of defenseis that should the VP among others have concerns about the decision they have the right to enactSection 4 of the 25th Amendmentand have the President declared “disabled” (unable to perform his duties) and then if all the principles are in agreement REPLACE the sittingPOTUS with the VP becoming the new POTUS. Remember: tick-tock!Keep in mind that most (but not all) countries that possess nuclear devices AND delivery systems (missiles or aircraft) subscribe to the theory that the very idea of of “global nuclear destruction” is the real deterrent, not the actual launching of the missiles or aircraft. The reason for the urgency in this process though is that any retaliatorylaunch must come within ten minutesor less (closer to six and becoming less every year or so) IF there is to beany hope for the launch to be completed before incoming bombersor missiles start to arrive on the continental U.S.The command of the NCA goes to NORAD, where the command is verified by checking the code sent by the “football” is current AND correct.Third line of defense in the process.Launch commands are then sent via coded and secure radios on a variety of modulated bands, again for security. As you might imagine, land lines do not go everywhere the commands are being sent, AND they are not as secure as telemetry.Fourth line of defense. Then there is the security involved by the missile crews, the submarine crews and the aircraft crews, each of which verifies the codes sent and once verified by at least TWO members of each crew that the crew’s specific orders are “opened” and again verified by the two crew members who must agree. (Hint and reminder: Tick-tock!)Fifth and Sixth layers of defenseagainst accidents and a takeover of the command chain at ANY single level. Then following procedures for each crew the missions will commence and that will generally lead to target input for fixed site missiles, transfer movement to a launch position for subs or cruise missile surface ships, or penetration of enemy airspace andpayload launch or drop on targets.Any attempt at this point to stop the launches or the airspace penetrations after reaching this point would be impossible. Layers of defense have consequences in that once they are all passed there is no stopping the events. Can't find your 20% theory? 5 Likes |

National Command AuthorityNational Command Authority(NCA) is a term used by theDepartment of Defenseof theUnited States of Americato refer to the ultimate source of lawful military orders. The NCA comprises thePresident of the United States(ascommander-in-chief) and theSecretary of Defensejointly, or their duly deputized successors, i.e. theVice Presidentand theDeputy Secretary of Defense. The term also refersto communications with thecommanding officersof theUnified Combatant Commandsto put U.S. forces into action.Authorization of a nuclear or strategic attackOnly the President can direct the use of nuclear weapons by U.S. armed forces, including theSingle Integrated Operational Plan(SIOP). While the President does haveunilateral authority as commander-in-chief to order that nuclear weapons be used for any reason at any time, the actual procedures and technical systems in place for authorizing the execution of a launch order requires a secondary confirmation under atwo-man rule, as the President's order is subject to secondary confirmation by the Secretary of Defense. If the Secretary of Defense does not concur, thenthe President may in his sole discretion firethe Secretary. The Secretary of Defense has legal authority to approve the order, but cannot veto it. And who appoints the Secretary of defence?? The president ""The Secretary of Defense is appointed by the President with theadvice and consentof theSenate, and is by custom a member of theCabinetand by law a member of theNational Security Council.""* He who plays the piper calls the tune. To all those saying it impossible for one dummy to start a nuclear war, you can see it is possible. |

Meel: If you can't find the 20% theory, it is up to you to keep searching for it. Even here in your analysis, it is stated that the president must seek approval before launching the codes and he might even be declared unfit for office to stop him from launching the weapons. 4 Likes |

Okay, the 100 comes to mind. Hypothetically, if the US govt decides to nuke Russia/North Korea. I don't think any of them would be so dumb to engage in such war, they must have devised a secret plan on how her citizens would survive. But sha, i think if a country decides to nuke another. The UN also has a hand in it's authorization. 1 Like 1 Share |

Explorers: The ozone hole is not technically a “hole” where no ozone is present, but is actually a region of exceptionally depleted ozone in the stratosphere over the Antarctic People maybe thinking it's a "hole". in Nigeria climate bills and implementation is like planning to explore a rainbow moon Even our agencies (with learned staffs) are encouraging activities that will keep on depleting our ozone. Nigeria will soon be like some part of China and India where pollutants will reduce even visibility 1 Like |
