Most people will say that the SAED programmes are boring, and they may have a point. But what are really boring are those lectures that are held on the parade ground under the canopy for hours right before the SAED commences. We were each to choose a SAED programme to join and I was looking to acquire some ICT skills specifically Graphic Designing, Web Designing, and Digital Marketing, so I always found myself vacillating between the New Horizons and IIHT stands. They taught us quite alright, but they were so stingy with information. They would teach you surface-level stuff (not even the basics) and refer you to register with them so that they can teach you the ‘main’ thing after camp at corper prices. The problem was that these so called corper prices seemed so exorbitant. So wetin come be the real price?

The most fascinating thing about the SAED programme was that, of the entire entire skills one could acquire, it was Makeup that had the highest number of corpers in attendance; more specifically - female corpers. You should have seen the crowd there, while the ICT niche had a significantly lesser number of people in attendance. Perhaps that was an indication of just how important looks are to most people in today’s world. I was sitting there wondering what was wrong with the young man that was lecturing us. Yesterday he taught us introduction to Digital
Marketing, today he’s teaching Computer Engineering. How can one learn anything at this rate? He should pick a struggle biko. I was busy fuming when my phone started vibrating in my pocket. It was Toyo calling. My sweet, sweet Toyo…

‘Hello,’ I said.

‘I can see you,’ she said, giggling.

‘Where are you?’

‘Just look for me.’

‘Where na?’ I asked.

‘I said you should look for me,’ she insisted before hanging up. I sighed and looked at the bevy of ladies paying attention to the lady teaching them how to professionally tie a gele. My eyes scanned through the audience, over the voluptuous legs, thighs, arses, and boobs on display before I finally found her in a corner with her gorgeous friend, smiling at me. It was always so easy to spot me out of a crowd due to my ‘up-Nepa’ complexion and it annoyed me to no end. I went to the back of the hall and she followed suit with our respective chairs in tow. Every time I saw Toyo I was always in marvel at what the good Lord had done. You see, there are boobs and then there are jugs. Jugs are the elder sister of boobs. Thus, what Toyo was carrying can be said to be jugs, not boobs. She gave me one of her trademark destiny-reformatting hugs and I felt a stirring in my loins. I prayed that my John Thomas would not embarrass me in public.

‘Wait, give me one more time,’ I said with arms spread wide as she gave me another hug.

‘You know, I was thinking about you just before you called. It’s like our minds are telepathically connected,’ I said smiling. She nodded in the way that someone who doesn’t believe your story would nod.

‘Story.’

‘I’m serious - everything about you. Your height, your carriage, your ebony beauty; the bright future you are carrying behind you and the wonderful view in front of you. I just find myself thinking about you and I know that you feel the same way too.’

She averted her gaze from mine and grabbed my hand, playing with my fingers.

‘Or you don’t feel anything for me?’ I goaded.

‘Wayward let’s talk about another thing abeg. Drop the topic.’

‘I should drop the topic. This is how heartbreak starts o, so you don’t love me?’ I said, acting sad.

‘I love everybody.’

‘Based on Jesus Christ wey you be abi?’

I watched as she kept caressing my hand.

‘I love everybody but I love some people more than others. That includes you,’ she added after a pause. My eyes widened in shock.

‘You love me? I made the list of people that you love? That means now I can die a happy man,’ I exclaimed as she burst out laughing.

‘You’re so naughty!’

Her friend came to join us and the three of us sat there gisting for a long while. I felt a bit uncomfortable though because sometimes I’d catch her staring at me from the corner of my eyes. She was probably wondering what I wanted with her friend, what my agenda was. The truth is I wasn’t sure myself. Soon her friend left us and we decided to take a walk around. Most SAED programmes had finished for the day but it didn’t matter as no one was allowed to go into the hostels or Mami market until it was 2PM. She held my hand as we walked, and occasionally I would come across one or two of my roommates along the way. Our eyes would cross paths and they would nod in acknowledgement of the package beside me like, ‘Wehdone sir. This one na confam.’ Honestly, walking with her in public gave my ego a huge boost because she had one of those bodies that can make a man turn his back on his family. And she was just 19! Remember, Babcock University? I swear these kids graduate younger and younger each year. I stopped to get us some ice cream, and she wrapped her arm around mine and rested her head on my shoulder.

‘That reminds me. That your school sef, what kind of name is Bab-Co.ck? Like, grab a cucumber or what? Does that mean all the girls in your school love co.ck?’ She rolled her eyes in exasperation as I said this. You don’t need to point it out though, I know I was objectifying her on a per second billing.

I looked her over from head to toe, licking my lips for added effect.

‘Could this be the reason why all your condiments are standing at attention like this? Blood of Orubebe!’ I placed my hands on my head like Papa Ajasco.

‘Please just stop. Stop it!’ she screamed at me. I looked at her to see if she was serious and to my surprise she was. I quietly handed her an ice cream cone.

‘Every time you are always talking about my boobs and my ass. Can’t we talk about something else?’ she said, looking deeply into my eyes as she spoke. ‘Please?’

Something else? Like what?

‘Okay,’ I said. She smiled and wrapped her arm around mine as we proceeded to stroll leisurely down that stretch of road – in utter silence.

‘Ahn ahn… say something na,’ she lamented.

‘What do you want me to say?’

‘Something… Anything…’

I shrugged and continued licking my ice cream.

‘So you mean you can only talk about my boobs and ass and nothing else?’ she asked incredulously.

I shrugged and looked at her despondently. Only she could restore my ability to speak once more. Only she had the power…

‘Fine,’ she said helplessly. ‘You can talk about my boobs and my ass if you want.’

I laughed hysterically and hugged her, pecking her on the cheek.

‘Don’t mind me love. You know I just like looking for your trouble.’

We walked and talked and gisted and soon it was 2PM. A female voice over the PA system announced that the SAED programme was officially over for the day. I told her I had to go to the hostel to get some sleep and she gave me another wonderful hug for the road. I promised to call her later in the night to hang out and bade her farewell. As I made my way across the volleyball court towards the boys’ hostel, the unthinkable happened - I caught Nife staring at me! She was seated with the jock at a corner beside the volleyball court. The jock had this serious and sullen expression on his face. That look that guys usually have when they’re declaring their undying love and affection for a woman. I quickly removed my gaze and stared straight ahead, pretending I couldn’t see them seated just to my left. My heartbeat increased as I walked, and I struggled to maintain my composure like my role model, James Bond. The annoying thing was, I could still feel the pain she’d inflicted in my heart over a week ago. Sure, it was only a little pinch, but the pain was still there. I consoled myself with the thought that I would see Toyo later that night, even though I felt nothing for her. Besides, Nife was waaaay finer than she was.

The honest truth is that Toyosi wasn’t really my type.
