DMerciful:Interestingly the rainy season is some sort of paradox. It's when I usually record pick power both the south facing array and west facing array hit figures above and close to their rated power respectively. I guess it has to do with the combination of occasional clear skies and relative drop in temperature and how common the two tend to align during these season. I got the second array to Jul-Aug proof my system and so far it is working I get an average 5kwh daily generation. Rainy season can be brutal in the south days on days where the sun just go awol. I had to pinch myself sometimes that am not close to mordor lol. If I live down south. I will battery up my system to allow me survive at least 3 sunless days. 1 Like |

bigrovar: Dust, causing light scatter/dispersion generally lowers the harvest during the dry season. And the stinging heat from the sun seems rather intense during that season. As you've rightly observed, both lower harvest during the dry season. My 3kW of panels peaks at 1.9kW instantaneous during the dry season but peaks at 2.6kW during the rains. There are brief spurts of nameplate value harvest. If you're predominantly "off-grid", there are never enough hours of sunlight in one day to charge your system to a 100% while not trying to exceed the typical C10 (13% charge rate (or FLA or 20% for AGM). Unless your PV array and battery bank are way oversized for your requirements (which I did). The trick is to have panels about 10 - 20% over the required to charge your system. I have 67%% higher. That way, you still get by on sunless days. On other days, opportunistic loads take up the slack. I never go below 30% DoD. Most days its between 3% and 10% now (NEPA has been behaving themselves lately). I know the demerits of shallow cylcles on flooded so I do a controlled mini-equalisation every now and then. 2 Likes |

Saipro: right on the money. I did notice though (and I have logged stats to back this up) that although your panel never reaches pick power during the dry season, overall energy generation is usually much higher due to the fact that you are guaranteed a steady and mostly uninterrupted supply of sunshine sometimes from 07:00 - 17:00. Hovercast weather disappears and power from the sun even though not at it's pick, does hold steady. Same can not be said for rainy season. One very good harvest day can be followed by 3 sunless days. |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by GeorgeD1(m): 8:54am On Jul 03, 2017 |
bigrovar, saipro, very true talk. rainy season has its up and downs especially for those in the south. one sunny day followed by a partially cloudy one or outright torrential rainfall the very next day. its the more reason i decided to oversize my system and i can say i'm reaping the benefits big time. |

pitodenz: Hello, all you seek for are clearly enlisted in the various company website .. It's a matter of your budget & individual choice . Trojan has made its name over the years and a bit more expensive than the other . all info about cycles , battery maintenance et al is clearly stated online .. No client will categorically tell you to go for this or that as both are USA brands with its basic standards !!! http://www.trojanbattery.com/product/l16re-b/ http://usbattery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/usb_L16xc_data_web_2015.pdf Simply contact me on Trojan battery availability- supplies , whilst you can contact solar depot for USB batteries.. JUO: I have used both for personal use and client use. The Trojans need watering more often but reach capacity a bit faster. My clients can't tell the difference. When you compare remember that the US Battery that you purchase is of a lower AH than the Trojan. Over the last 14 months we have installed US Battery batteries and we have had no issues whatsoever. |

Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by GeorgeD1(m): 6:46pm On Jul 04, 2017 |
foonshur: foonshur, that inverter looks very much like my old prostar 5kva modified sine wave inverter which I used for over two years. it's performance was anything but spectacular and then one very quiet morning I got up to power the inverter and it blew up in my face without any warning! to say that I was shocked is an understatement. up till this day I couldn't fathom what could have made a perfectly working inverter go up in smoke just when the power switch was activated. I wasn't using solar at the time so that was out of the question. there was no phcn supply at that time so no question of overvoltage. and besides the same inverter had worked all through the previous night without any issues and I only just shut it down for an hour or two to give it some rest...and then boooom! worse still, the very next day I took it down to the dealer only to be told that the model had been scrapped and was no longer being supported... this experience was a turning point for me and it was why I decided never to have anything to do with chinese inverters, ever again! 3 Likes |

US L16HC XC2-6V, 420AH; S.G at 100% battery capacity is 1.270, Bulk/Absorbs at 7.35V, Floats at 6.51V and equalizes at 7.65V Trojan L16P-6, 420AH; S.G at 100% battery capacity is 1.277, Bulk charge Voltage is 7.41V, Absorbs between 7.05-7.41V, Floats at 6.75V and equalizes at 8.1V. Both batteries are not bad batteries, the Trojan company has been around longer and that adds to their experience. I.ve used the above US batteries for 5 years; they were under charged, left to dry a number of times and yet they survived 5 years before 2 went bad. This tells me they could have lasted for about 7 to 8 years. I have crown batteries now, but a friend has Trojans. They are just 1.5 years old-so far so good. I have guys on another forum who have used the Trojan batteries for more than 8 years. It is going to be the little things or not so little things that you should consider; cost, maintenance regimen, availability of batteries, how fresh are the batteries or how long those batteries have been on suppliers shelf etc. The S.G for Trojan battery is higher than US battery, requiring a higher voltage or longer absorb time to completely reverse the chemistry for a full battery charge. You notice that the float and equalize voltages are higher for the trojan batteries, this means the trojan batteries are prone to consume more water than the US batteries. I will also advice against Trojans if your charging device does not go above 31V for the equalize cycle. Am not against the Trojans, I just hope you to consider all these things before you make up your. pitodenz: 2 Likes |

GeorgeD1:exactly my my point. was just testing that shit for someone and I decided to use it over night. fortunately/unfortunately phcn was restored, and before morning it blew doz batteries to dat size. doz who made it should be prosecuted. just waste 2 good batteries just like dat for this economy |

foonshur:Sorry about ur batteries, I can't just imagine it. For this Buhari's time! The maker of that inverter should be shòt. Next time when u need to test an inverter, do equip urself with a clamp meter, test both the voltage and current(charging). Pls avoid this mistake, it is too costly. 4 Likes |
