Nigerian Army is working for Nigerians.

What you are seeing the Nigerian army doing is the Army day celebration 2017 with a kick off of sanitation activities which include clearing of drainages, medical outreach and other humanitarian activities.

This is the true nature and face of the Nigerian Army contributing to the development and well being of the citizens.

Still much prefer the 7.62mm, we should have never gotten rid of the R1s.

Just to put into perspective a 5.56mm is a .22 caliber. You buy a .22 for your little one to get them used to shooting a firearm and for them to hunt little birdies, squirrels and bunnies.

A 7.62mm / .308 on the other hand can take down anything up to and including an elephant ( if the law allowed it).

Benefits of the 5.56 NATO claimed over the 7.62 NATO include equal lethality, half the mass and volume, reduced recoil and signature, better penetration of metal plates, flatter trajectory and shorter time of flight out to 700 meters, weapons chambered for it are lighter and better hit probability. Hit probability refers to the ability of a soldier to concentrate on firing in spite of their weapon's recoil and noise, which is noticeably different between the two cartridges. The 7.62 NATO has twice the impact energy of the 5.56 NATO, preferable if a target is protected by higher level armor, especially at "medium" range. If not, both rounds normally penetrate satisfactorily through enemies up to 600 meters, approximately. A 5.56 NATO round fired from a 20 in (510 mm) barrel has a flatter trajectory than a 7.62 NATO round fired from a barrel of equal length, while the 5.56 NATO fired from a 14.5 in (370 mm) barrel has the same trajectory as the 7.62 NATO from a 20 in barrel, as well as the same time of flight. A 7.62 NATO round reaches 50 percent of its velocity within 80 mm (3.1 in) of the barrel when fired, so decreasing the barrel length for close quarters combat results in increased muzzle pressure and greater noise and muzzle flash.[37][45]

The decline of South Africa’s defence industry

The biggest loser in this regard is the SA Army with most of its prime mission equipment “becoming obsolescent or even obsolete and key capability gaps emerging just as it is set to face more challenging tasks”. A lack of close-in anti-tank bunker weapons, air defence systems, air transportable combat and logistic vehicles and logistic vehicles to support mechanised forces are given as example of what the landward force needs.

The SA Air Force (SAAF) lacks a full range of precision weapons for fighters and combat helicopters, has no “serious maritime operations capability” as well as no airlift to support regional missions such as the African Standby Force (ASF) and the African Capability for Immediate Response to Crises (ACIRC).

The maritime service of the SANDF lacks adequate numbers of ships to meet current and envisioned regional commitment and lacks sealift to support regional missions according to the document.

NAF ‘WINGS’ ADDITIONAL COMBAT PILOTS

In furtherance of the human capacity building initiative of the present leadership of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), two combat pilots were ‘winged’ today, 4 July 2017 after successfully completing an 18-month Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas in the United States of America. The two newly ‘winged’ pilots, both of the rank of Flying Officer, went through the primary and fighter jet training during which they amassed over 100 flying hours each on the T-6 Texan ii and T-38 Talon aircraft types. The 2 officers had earlier undergone an introductory flying training at the US Aviation Academy in Denton, where they flew the Cessna 172 aircraft. They will now be deployed to NAF combat units for tactical training on fighter jets.

In his remarks during the winging ceremony, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar reiterated that the NAF would not relent in its efforts at human capacity building, noting that the Service cannot function optimally without appropriate personnel training. The CAS further stated that the NAF was already reaping from its huge investment in human capacity building, as reflected in the several NAF aircraft that had been successfully reactivated, with attendant effect on operational efficiency. According to the CAS, “only the right training can enable personnel deal with the complex security challenges facing the country. We will therefore continue to build human capacity while also ensuring that our humanitarian intervention schemes are going on”. Air Marshal Abubakar congratulated the new pilots and urged them to quickly settle down and join the rest of their colleagues in defending the territorial integrity of the nation. Earlier in his remarks, the Chief of Training and Operations, who represented by the Director of Training (DOT), Air Vice Marshal Muhammed Idris, thanked the CAS for availing the pilots the opportunity to be trained at the prestigious Laughlin Air Force Base, remarking that the training comes with special laurel because of the uniqueness of the school.

It would be recalled that only less than 3 weeks ago, the NAF ‘winged’ 10 officers who had just completed their one-year pilot training program. Many more NAF pilots and members of the ground crew were reported to be undergoing training at local and overseas training institutions.

Wouldn't even shoot a Duiker with a .22 let alone a Bear.......could only have been from point blank range between the eyes.

I'm not saying the 7.62 is better but at least you know your enemy is not going to stand up with a big a$$ hole in his back!! Where as with the 5.56 I won't be as confident.

http://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=48438:the-decline-of-south-africas-defence-industry&catid=7:Industry&Itemid=116

Same old same old......don't know how many times we have to hear the same old story.......every body knows that the SANDF is underfunded for its size and role and unfortunately with the economy as it is the budget won't grow much larger in the next 2/3 years.

That said according to the Minster of Defence they are exploring other funding options which seems to be at least helping the SANDF achieve the 1st objective of the defence review.

But what I don't agree with is that the Army is the biggest loser, in recent years Communications systems,Rooikatte, Ratels and Olifant have been upgraded, currently all our artillery are being upgraded, the GBADS project seems to be on track so air defence shouldn't be a priority in the next few years. There's also the Milan ER anti tank launcher which we ordered in 2007 as well as the older Denel Ft5s so don't know how we lack close in anti tank weapons.
We do lack air portable combat vehicles......but we always have, that's why we built vehicles like the Ratels and Rooikatte to DRIVE to where they have to be , what we don't lack is logistic vehicles we have thousands of Samil 20,50 and 100, they do however need to be maintained but that's why we brought in the Cubans to build our skill in that capacity. The African truck project from Denel is also another option the SANDF can explore if funding allows it. Also let's not forget that the Army also received the Chaka C2 system, impi blue force tracker, link za and also the general soldier modernization under project African warrior

SAAF imo is the biggest loser........we desperately need new maritime surveillance aircraft and to a lesser extent light transports as well as medium transport aircraft to replace our C130......what SAAF lack the most is a heavy lift capability.
With regards to our fighters all we really lack is BVR. And possibly air to ground missiles although we do have several guided bomb options to choose from.

The Navy will receive new vessels under project biro and hotel, thus should somewhat solve the lack of vessels problem to an extent.

A few weeks ago, Chikl0 made comments which were very poor-informed, and showed that he lacked the knowledge of the actual state of things in the South-African Air Force and the SANDF in general.

However, i cannot blame him as he is North-African, as such would not be very conversant with other parts of Africa.

The post from NAF said 18 months from basic trainer to lead in fighter, I guess the pair still have to go through type conversion training to the NAF platforms they'll pilot.

This is confusing, as we quite obviously do... I am not sure if they mean our "new" commitments which stem from the Defense Review or not... because, those are big commitments (see pic)

But, lets not forget:
* Project Hotel. Aquisition of new hydrographic vessel. Status: Underway, unknown completion date
* Project Biro. Aquisition of 3 IPV and 3 OPV. Status: Preferred Bids selected, completion date unknown.
* Project Carol. Aquisition of 5 boarding boats, unknown number of diving boats, unknown number of riverine patrol boats, ship sea boats, ferries, sailing dinghies, an ocean racing yacht. Status: Boarding boats delivered, Diving boats ordered, Rivirine patrols boats delivered, rest is unknown.

Like, yeah. Its just the usual deal really. Peace time military, peace time problems.

It's an accepted fact that the SA defence industry which was protected by sanctions or the arms embargo and over charging the SADF will decline as many things can be sourced internationally cheaper instead of wasting funds in R & D or industrial espionage grin grin grin

But strategic capabilities like systems integration, electronic warfare, ammunition e.g AAMs, cruise missiles, PGMs etc, adapting equipment, C2, maintenance etc will or still maintained.

These things offer an edge over any African country or any potential foe within SADC and it's boarders.

Interestingly I wonder if we are gonna be paranoid like in the late 90s when one of our neighbours acquired some light tanks. When that neighbour acquires new front line fighters. Are we gonna feel like we need to balance or regain an edge?
