Should I Stop Work And Do A Masters Programme? by rien05(f): 2:45pm On Jul 07, 2017
Hello House,

Kindly advise me on which way to follow. I currently earn 150k per month and I am thinking of enrolling for an MBA in Unilag. My headache is I will have to pick the full time option because it is cheaper and has better lecture hours, which means I have to stop work. Classes are from 9am-2pm weekly. The fee is about 200k.
I am skeptical about the part time option because its classes are during the evenings from 4pm to 8pm. I live and work on the island(Ajah) and close by 5pm. My boss won't allow me close by 3pm. He might agree to close at 4pm but even if he agrees to 3pm, there's no way I will get to Unilag before 5:30pm(on a no traffic day) by public transport. And lets say I finish lectures by 8pm, with the traffic and all I might be getting home by 11pm or so(dangerous for a girl). And it will so tell on me because the stress will be too much.(I am already a Lekpa I don't want to disappear). The koko again is that the fees for part time is about 500k.(I just started earning 150k ooh shocked and also ponzi finish my money at the beginning of the year. GREED. don't blame me ohh, many people fell victim with me).
The last option is the Executive MBA. Classes are on saturdays from 8pm to 4pm. The fee is about 2Million. I won't even go there.
If I say I should do another Masters course it will have to be a science course which are all full time.

My question is should I take the risk to forfeit my job and do my MBA? The forms are out. I want to prepare my mind before buying the form(N22,500). I really want an upgrade to my certificate. I also need money to keep me going because there is no one to lean on. Everybody is forming OYO. And I also don't want to regret embracing an opportunity now that I have money for fees. No one knows tomorrow. Please advise oooohhhhhh mbok

Well, what's ur first degree course? Well, if u are opting for MBA, that means u want to go for a career in management. I) How viable is that? (2) I also think that considering the fact u are scared of forfeiting ur job, then save seriously for some years, that is if u are still young and probably put in for the executive MBA. (3) Another option is probably going for a part time masters in Uniben in a science related course. U could reach me on 08167846370 on wats app for further discussion. Thanks

My sister i will not advice u to resign and go for a masters program o, there is no job out there. My advice is :
1. You can go for an online master program
2. Or look another school in Lagos(e.g lasu, Noun) or any sch in west that there masters program are run on weekend.
3. You can even do a professional programme e.g(ican, cipm) e.t.c to upgrade your set instead of masters.

please and please dont quit ur job for any msc. it is true the stress is much. i am currently a masters student at unilag too and mine is a part time and yes the fees are high cus it is Law and i close by 5pm too from work. what i do is follow a colleague than jumping a public transport and it makes me get to school in a favorable time. And the beginning would be very stressful but with time, u get to adjust plus ur class governor gets to fix lecture time in a flexible way. i moved from home which is on the island and got a self con close to unilag gate. thereby, reducing the stress on my own part than dashing back to the island by 8pm. besides, when you start classes and everyone comes in late because they are all coming from work. you will get the picture. plus msc does not guarantee you a job after. pls make a wise decision o.

NEVER ever quit your job for a Nigerian Msc. I can say that you can quit your job for a US Msc which should assist you get a job abroad and you can request a transfer to Nigeria and you'll be paid as an expatriate.

It's not worth it quitting your job for a Nigerian Msc.
If you can't manage the stress, take professional certifications.

From what you wrote down here, you work conditions is not that bad and the remuneration is okay, I haven't done any masters, but many people who have done theirs have attested to how useless a Nigerian masters degree is, MBA is not much different, so quiting your job for MBA or any master's in Nigeria doesn't sound like a plan, afters the MBA then what?
You don't start something without learning to finish it first, unless you have a well thought out post-MBA plans, you might make a huge mistake quiting your job without a plan just like that.

Op I will never advise you to quit your job for an msc in Nigeria and besides an MBA nowadays is really useless except its in a top 10 business school. Don't waste your money and your resources on anything that will not aid in your self development.

First of all enrolling in a masters course is a nice idea.i think you shouldn't leave your job ,meaning you should enroll for the part-time masters program. If you are a guy you can buy a ladies bike so you can shuttle(it's cheaper and faster).
Pls again I say, don't leave your job o.am not earning as much as you are and am doing my own masters degree at the moment so I know what it means to do the two.
God will strengthen you. You just have to pay the price and you don't need much lectures, so don't bother about whether its part-time or full time .
All the best

Just Google Abu online MBA. U ll get all the info. They offer two types of MBA. Special for those with non management background, regular for graduates with management background. But make sure u have enough funds cos it's kinda expensive but it's worth it.

Dear Op. Listen carefully. An MBA from Unilag is worthless. A total waste of time and it wont open any doors for you. MBA's are supposed to allow you network with great minds for great jobs post school and also for the contents. I feel a hustling Nigerian should take an MBA for these two reasons. 1) If you have big dreams of working at the best firms and startups in Europe and North América and 2) If you are looking to migrate and you need something valuable to get good jobs abroad. The first optipn also goes for those that have the plum jobs here and are looking to go higher.Harvard, Insead and all.
I would encourage you to face your work, save money, and rack up experience cos its the most important thing in the corperate world. Take online courses via cousera and the likes or do professional exams. The only Nigerian MBA that can make a difference in your fortunes might be from Lagos Business school. No employer would bat an eyelid for an MBA from Unilag so aim higher and work really hard. All the best dear and congrats on securing your job.

Take CIPS. Work for 10 years then you would afford much better MBA's. Experience is key.

Sisto, lemme encourage you. I'm currently running my part time degree in UNILAG. Economics kiss. It's expensive ooo, but I opted for part payment even though they charged me more for it. But it made it easier to pay for me because i'm not earning up to your salary for now.

My dear, in life, one has to make sacrifices of comfort for the time being. I'm currently in my 2nd year and no, it hasn't been easy. It's been God.

Story, story......

Last year, my first year, I had classes 5/6 days a week. Mondays to Wednesdays, 6pm- 8pm, Thursdays- Fridays, 6pm- 9pm, then some random Saturdays. Let me give you a bit of background here, I live in Mowe, work at Ikeja, school at Yaba then back home to Mowe. smiley The flesh I was gathering disappeared because of that condition (was a size 8,now a 6, trying to get to 10 now) cheesy.

I sometimes got home around past 12am, sometimes to 1am; especially on Camp days. smiley

Why didn't I find somewhere closer to stay? I didn't have female friends that lived close by. I couldn't bring myself to open my mouth and tell my parents I'm moving to man's house cuz of school. grin

Like I said, it is God's grace that is keeping me. Now, my lectures are just Tuesdays and Saturdays, so it's much better.

If you can, try and do both, if you are a Christian, ask for grace and strength for the journey.... if you're not, it's a good time to be.
smiley

I don't agree with you that no employer values a Nigerian MBA. Do you know how much executive MBA in LBS costs? How long can she save that?

Hello. I said that an MBA from LBS is valued but not oné from Unilag.
She can take professional courses and keep working and getting promoted cos experience is key. She doesnt sound like she has even worked for 5 years so talks of MBA at this moment is totally unnecessary.
