Hi all... it no more a fable that young stars grow day by day as the dream of driving or owing a car fills their mind. However, most people make mistakes of choosing the wrong choices when it comes to owing their first car. Imagine a young graduate with a monthly income of 50k buying a Mercedes Benz, Volvo or Quest. I'm sure you know the implications already. The thread is created as an eye opener for newbies and to as well discuss cars that are durable for these species.
I will list some cars here while Auto gurus can say what their experiences are as regards this cars... Golf 3, Golf 4, vento, Jetta, Toyota Corolla '99/'00, Micro, Nissan Primera, Nissan Almeria, Peugeot 206, 207, 306 and 307, Sunny Nissan, Nissan Micra, Audi, Mazda 323, 626 and Camry '99. One can get all these cars(TOKs) for 1m or less. Now let's give our opinions on them. Thanks!

You'll get a Toks Golf 3, Vento, Nissan Primera 1998, Nissan Micra, Mazda 323, 626 conveniently with less than a million. Trust me, they are good cars for first timers. If you don't think so, then ask transporters why these cars are mostly used as cabs and taxis. You know cab drivers look for ruggedness, efficiency and fuel economy plus relatively cheap and accessible parts in the market.

Really can't say much about a Audi TT as I really don't see it as a common car on Nigerian roads. Hence availability of parts and technicians to fix faults when the need arises should be considered.
If it's a favorite, you should have a diagnosis/scanning tool handy to trace and detect faults for you so you wouldn't have to rely on 'trial and error' kinda troubleshooting of mechanics.
This applies to any other vehicle of choice as long as they are OBD compliant.

You're making sense bro... This is actually why the topic was created. Yes...some should have gone for less than 800k self if not for the ish with duty and border closure. However, out of the Cars you chose... I think I will give it to a very neat Toks Golf 3.

Very smart choice. Be on a lookout for one with 1.8L engine. Trust me, if you buy a good Toks of it, it will serve you

The Nigga is just a disgrace to car talk, little or no information about cars and their capabilities and yet he boldly opened a thread to type thrash with confidence, imagine calling a V40 which has 1.8l 4cyl 16valve engine a fuel guzzler. Smh
Will check the model as I'm still not very sure... Next time, try to treat and comment with love... huh? It will surely do us all good. Never told you I know it all... if I do, I'm sure we won't be having this topic. You came here with no tangible input to the Topic you read... All you can brag about is knowing about cars. How do u plan to help those that will read and be educated from what we type here. Now, if you know u do know abt cars as u've posited... kindly read the post again and comment. Thanks!

Why are you conveniently refusing to address my claims, you started by giving out false Information and you still don't want to go back to modify your earlier posts after boldly giving out fake info here.

Be a man, either backup your claims or take back your initial erroneous claims, there's no hiding place, name the Volvo model and year then state that your car name, make and model

I think the Golf 3 has 1.4L, 1.6L as well... if yes, what advantage does the 1.8 has over these ones... and again, would you prefer the Manual over Automatic Transmission?

You know the most dangerous thing is a half-educcation, the subject now assumes he knows it all, yet unknown to him, he's just as misinformed as those who haven't even begun the process of being educated.

I don't have time for name calling(ie "Old Volvo"wink or unsubstantiated facts and cooked up figures(ie "anywhere I go with 5litres, he'll be there with 10 litres). So lets get down to business, list the below and we'll pull out verified stats from the reputable car sites in this planet

Name the make of your car, model and year, and also tell us the model of your pastors Volvo car and the year, that's all I need and I'll send you to the cleaners, I'll be glad if you take up this challenge,

Waiting...

Will definitely quote you when I get there model... wasn't around to check it. I didn't drive his car to know if it zaps fuel... He said it, and that could be an exaggeration but one thing is sure that the car being the Old Volvo can not in anyway consume equally with a Golf 3 or 4. Don't forget you yet haven't address this Topic that brought you here which is our primary aim... You're still forming boss and seeing a disgrace to cartalk... Be thoughtful!

You started by doling out wrong info and someone tried to correct you, yet you kept insisting and even using derogatory terms like "old Volvo" to back it up. So that's talking like a pro Abi. You say you drive with 5 litres and every other Volvo car(which are all old volvos too) will do same trip with 10litres, that's where my own challenge comes in, state that your car name first

When you want to type on a public forum like nairaland, its better you get your facts right, else it will end like this, you just don't sit down and make assumptions and try to force it down on others as fact

I'm certain you're comparing two cars that are not in the same class category and were even produced decades apart, yet you assume that it's alright, how's that for a pro

So, when you went general on "Volvo" you didn't know there were models and years Abi, why say "golf3", why not just say "Volkswagen" and continue to insist that "Volkswagen " is not a good car for starters, after all "touareg" might not be a good car for starters and its a Volkswagen product

Well, the advantages I coined from transporters are 1.8L engines last longer than the 1.6L, the output horse-power from a 1.8L is more than 1.6L hence the performance of a 1.8L is higher.

Well, I go with either a manual gear or a automatic gear car whichever is available for me. It's all about convenience, budget. Sure in Nigeria, automatic gear cars cost more to purchase than manual gear cars.

If you read my post well, you would see a place where registered my love for Volvo esp the S60 type. I wrote that base on what he said about his own Volvo car and probably the stereotypes from people. This is your tell you I didn't go general on it.

Thanks! You really nailed it. But does this mean that 1.6 would be more fuel economical when both travel on a same distance?

So you come to nairaland and you're talking based on "stereotypes".

How about the stereotype about direct fan connection being the best In naija, based on our weather, is that also a fact?

Anyways, the way you're now going all religious on the issue, I see you're either out of points or you never really had one in the first place

As for solutions, I really didn't see you asking for a solution anywhere, you only started listing cars you think is good for a first timer and cars you also think are not good

I can't say much for other brands I'm not so conversant with, and I never come to nairaland to badmouth any car either, I'll only correct you when u make an erroneous statement which I'm certain of and that's what I just did

Yeah sure. 1.6L more economical if economy won't be altered by condition of engine or carburetor.

Note: No 2 or more cars are exactly the same in performance. Condition of engine or gear aren't exactly the same. Let me break it down.

No 2 or more 1.6L engine or 2 or more 1.8L engine are the same in performance on the road. Performance are altered by condition of engine or gear, general working condition of car.

People make lots of comparisons neglecting the fact that no 2 cars of same model or different models are exactly the same in performance.

You are welcome.
I advise anyone that intend to buy a car of choice to read about the car or vehicle online before making a purchase. At least that will give you an idea what you are going for. Search engines as Google and Wikipedia will help. You can also download manuals from manufacturer's website or other car websites if available.

It will save a lot of stress of after purchase.
Most people don't even know recommended Tyre sizes for their vehicles, recommended type of engine oil or transmission oil to use in servicing. These are very important for long lasting vehicles.

Diagnosis/Car scanning tools are also a must have for car users using 1996 or newer model vehicles.

Any model year of golf 3 is good as long as it is in good working condition

If you are not sure of a golf 3 design, type 'golf mk3' in Google to view images of what a golf 3 look like
